Yes, videos end up at 48khz and 16 bit but always record the audio at 24 bit if available. I would record the audio at the same frequency as the video so just default everything to 48khz. That ensures that video and audio will sync perfectly. The higher bit rate of 24 bit may not benefit the video side but it helps the audio engineer have more digital headroom/info to work with. Digital plugins in the DAW will also react better with a better quality audio file. Long story short going from 16 to 24 bit wont waste a lot of hard drive space compared to going from 48khz to 96khz with the sample rate.
This is great, BUT you forgot to show how to use headphones to monitor your audio! This is essential! I am going to share this with my students as it is very clear and concise, but I will have to add that instruction about setting a listening level and using good closed-back headphones while recording.
Felisha Pedersen Sure! First, use good quality headphones that block out outside noise. “Closed back” type that fit over your ears are best. This way you can monitor your audio while recording to make sure there are no issues like wind noise or interference (keep cell phones away from mics BTW). BEFORE you start recording set your headphone OUTPUT level to a good comfortable listening level. I believe around 80% volume is usually good on the H6 for most headphones. Note, this is totally separate from the microphone INPUT level described below. The headphone level only affects your listening level, not the level at which sounds are recorded I to the file. Mic INPUT level: Select channels you’d like to record by pressing their corresponding buttons. Look at the input level on the meter and turn the input level (“gain”) up or down so that the loudest sounds you intend to record peak at around -12dB to -6dB on the meter. This is around the “yellow” level of the meter. This provides proper recording level, but leaves some headroom in case you encounter a loud sound. You never want the recording to hit 0dB (in the “red”) as this will cause clipping distortion in the recording. Once you have your levels for each channel set, press record. You can adjust the levels slightly during recording if the sound source gets too quiet or if you anticipate it will get loud. That’s it! Just remember meters peak around -12dB to -6dB!

Others have told me that the L and R channels are always stereo linked and can't be un-linked, which would seem like a major limitation if true.
I recorded an event with the h6zoom mic attached and only got silent tr1.wav files for 33 minutes - have I actually recorded the sound, can it be extracted? I think I forgot to press L&R. Is there any way I can set up so this doesn't happen again - my events can get pretty chaotic and so easy for this to happen.
I think you mean kHz(?) The sampling speed is generally related to usage. Typically video folks use 48kHz. Audio folks use 44.1kHz. Reporters or other users might just use something lower for voice only recordings. The levels get set based on how loud your source is. You'd turn it down for a rock concert and turn it up for recording a quiet sound.

hey Dominique, I am getting crazy! I'm trying to use my zoom h6 with logic pro x, otherwise Garageband. Well, the point is they both read it as an external mic but the message doesn't come in. I tried to use both programs to see if a preset on one was limiting my input, but now, for sure it must be something inside my zoom h6 that must be blocking. Have any idea of what it could be?
inside the H6 Zoom under menu should be an area called "Audio Interface", your going to want to turn "Multi-track" and then plug it in. Have you tried that.

Great stuff man. When I use the H6 as a stand-alone recorder with at least 3 mics(sm58's) I get this weird signal noise interference. Doesn't happen when I use the H6 as an audio interface hooked to my computer. Any ideas on why that might be?

You can do a search for "location audio bag" on Google and there should be plenty of options. A lot of the usual camera bag manufacturers also make location sound bags with front pouches for lavs, a mixer, and recorder.

I would suggest resetting the H6 as well as making sure the card you have inside is compatible to record audio. In addition, format your SD card before recording.

I am not sure exactly what is going on but what you might want to do is a factory reset on the device. That usually works for me for anytime the H6 freezes or has a hiccup.
Note that when the MP3 file type is selected, the H6 only records in stereo; if you want to record in multitrack, you must select a WAV file type. The H6’s internal mixdown function allows multitrack WAV projects to be easily reduced down to stereo MP3 (or WAV), with independent control over each track’s level, panning and pitch.
Each time you record a file, The Zoom H6 creates a project under an umbrella folder. To delete one project, press the menu button. Use the scroll wheel to select “PROJECT MENU”, Press Ok. Select “Trash” and press Ok. Select “Delete” and press Ok. Select “Yes” and press Ok. To delete all projects in a folder, select “Delete All Projects” instead, and press Ok. Note: Deletion of a project cannot be reversed!
I personally own the Marantz PMD661 and the audio quality is great. The only problem I've had with it is the level LEDs aren't viewable in full daylight. I went in and replaced the LEDs to much brighter ones. I bought the PMD661 a couple years before the H6 was available.

Stereo will require two sources of audio so if you are plugging up two shotgun microphones, then you can create a stereo setup by placing both microphones on the left and right of your subject. If you received the two capsules with your unit, you can achieve stereo with the XYH-6 X/Y capsule.

Great machine but you cannot see the screen well and it's upside down when the mics are facing you when you are using it solo.
