I really prefer the range & expression of the final night in Sydney (on UA-cam) where we can see John's acting as well. Probably because I was present for that final show, as was Sir Tim Rice, the lyricist. That added a sprinkle of stardust. I can still hear the deafening silence after the performance as people who had been holding their breath slowly started to recover their movement and voices. Have a listen, compare and see what you think. I had also seen an earlier show, then later unexpectedly been gifted the very generous final night tickets.
Every time I hear this version I tear up, so much emotion. The Whole cast of the Aussie version of Jesus Christ Superstar were brilliant, e.g., Jon Stevens, Angry Anderson, Kate Cebrano, etc. 💕💕
Yep we need to give Kate Ceberano some love and attention. Hey Matt I would love ❤ it if you give Kate Ceberano a reaction singing "everything alright "from jesus christ superstar"!
The garden of Gethsemane pronounced Gethsemany, where Jesus was asking God to allow the passion to pass, because even though he was the Son of God, in his humanity he was afraid. So he went through a terrible anxiety. This is what John Farnham captured in this performance.
This is from the musical Jesus Christ Superstar, when John played Jesus in the Australian production in the 90s. HOWEVER....YOU HAVE TO CHECK OUT THE LIVE VERSION!!!!!
Hi mate, could you please check out the live production of John singing this song 🎵 it sounds so much better with loads more passion from farnsy. Thankyou for your awesome reactions to our Aussie icon Farnsy. ❤️ from OZ 🇦🇺🇦🇺
On the topic of the Aussie old boys an absolutely fantastic clip is Jimmy Barnes with Joe Bonamassa covering Lazy by deep Purple. My neighbours are sick of listening to it
I love this song from 'Jesus Christ Superstar' - the song is when Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane. Famous musical when I was young - one of the first big musical stage productions
I believe this was recorded before the show started.( Jesus Christ super star. The live version is after about 90 days, sometimes 2shows a day. The difference is notable. The passion immense.
This is good but there is another version (video) on YT that is an unbelievable vocal achievement which engenders so much emotion. John is a little older in the afforesaid version and his interpretive powers have improved considerably. Please review it. Nobody is going to care if you review it again and you will be in awe of his interpretation of this song.
I hadn't heard this version before so it was interesting to hear how it was embellished and improved on in the live version recorded on the final night of Jesus Christ Superstar.
(The garden of) Geth-sem-a-ni, it's from Jesus Christ Superstar, a rock opera created by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber in 1970. The earliest Australian version was staged from May 1972 to February 1974 ans I saw it in Sydney in 1972 while in high school with my music class. Aussies Trevor White as Jesus and the late, great Jon English as Judas were the stars back then and I still have the LP from that production. In 1992 a production starring Jon Stevens as Judas and John Farnham as Jesus, toured Australian arenas to phenomenal success, running for 84 nights and attended by a still record 987,000 people, grossing over $40 million at the box office. John Farnham, born in England in 1949, emigrated to Australia 1959. He has the most fantastic voice!!
Ah yes - and in the old Capitol Theatre - too old because you could see light coming in through holes in the roof - great production, though. I preferred Marcia Hines over Michelle Fawden [sp?] as Mary, felt Marcia had more force of personality where Michelle faded.
I’ve never heard Farnsey do anything like this before. That’s why I love watching reaction videos. Very interesting indeed! Almost a death metal feeling to it. Thanks Matt!
There’s a YT video where someone posted what he thinks were the 10 best ever performances of Gethsemane. It’s obvious that he never heard John Farnham’s version.
Lol I can’t imagine listening to this song without knowing it was from a musical - it would just sound so random and bizarre..? His voice is transformative… literal chicken skin every time I hear this song.. and I’m an atheist!!! 🐨🐨❤️❤️
Chills! Thank you 🙏🏻 I’ve been waiting for this one to pop up…❤️❤️❤️ There is a live recording of the Australian stage performance of Jesus Christ Superstar (2 parts) from ‘92 here on YT that is just magical ✨💜✨
I understand what you are saying Matt, I did film making studies for 5 years and when I watch movies I have to watch them twice because the first time I'm looking at direction, camera angles, lighting, editing and so forth. Second time I can sit back and enjoy the movie for what it is.
Thanks for your hard work Matt. You will have fun with your opera leanings. If you search John Farnham Anthony Warlow main event Granada. and choose Anthony Warlow raises the bar It has them singing Granada and doing vocal exercises. You’ll love it. Thanks love Michelle
🐕Needs his own channel ❤️ Introduction please Matt !!! And regular appearances. I reckon he just got you at least 50 new subscribers 😂 I used to be a dog groomer, so the first thing l notice is whether a dogs nails need clipping or its ears need cleaning, or l wonder what number blade they used on the coat. Same with you and music. So l get it.
I can enjoy the music but I also like your reactions as I don't have a music background. It certainly makes re-listening much more insightful(without removing the pleasure). I've listened to John for decades but it's only since I've watched reactors you & others who are involved in music, voice or instrumentally that I've really come to appreciate how bloody amazing this man is. John was portraying Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar and was absolutely awesome back in the 90's. It was cast with many Australian stars JF, Kate Ceberano, John Stevens & Angry Anderson. It was more in the style of a concert/arena show than the original theatrical performance. I saw it in Sydney with Tim Minchin as Judas Iscariot in 2013. It was also great ...very modern!, but also back its original theatrical style. Not at all like the 70's glittery glitzy version. Don't think John's version was glitzy either. Great reaction. Go watch it live for your own enjoyment.
Hi Matt. This is the Garden of Gethsemane where the day before Christ was cruscified. In the garden the disciples fell asleep. Judas betrayed Jesus and in this song Jesus argues with God if it nessary for
I the Garden of Gethsemane in this song Christ argues with God about whether it is necessary for him to die so exscrushiatingly God says that he must I think that they have had the last supper Judas betrays Jesus in the Garden. That’s the general gist of it all anyway. I am not sure about the details. Long time since Sunday School Matt. Geth sem a ne has equal stress on all four syllables. I think. Thanks Love was Michelle
Pronounced Get - sem - a - knee This is the part of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar , where Jesus questions his Father (GOD) does he really have to die to save mankind? It takes place in the garden of Gethsemane, hence title.
Thanks Matt, you need to watch the video of the Australian Jesus Christ Superstar and see John playing Jesus singing live and Jon Stevens as Judas is also amazing. 🥰
Anthony Warlow has had full opera training. John Farnham has never had a lesson. A few years ago the Australian music industry musicians and singers voted for the best Australian singer of all time. John came number one jimmy BARNES was number five and Anthony Warlow was number 75 or so. That was too low for Anthony. John blitzed it apparently. John has perfect pitch.
John Farnham has perfect pitch. There are thousands of hours of music on UA-cam and I have never heard a single note out of tune. Live and running around crazy and not a note out of pitch. I am a Pavarotti fan and John Farnham has better pitch control. I have heard Pavarotti out of tune warming up. I am a Freddie Mercury fan. He’s so good but not like John. I don’t think that he knows that he has perfect pitch. Thanks Michelle
Extraordinary 👏👏👏
I saw JC Superstar 3 times, then met the whole cast. They were all so nice.
The live version in Sydney kills this I think
Go to the live - unbelievable

I hope you've seen the live version by now - the final night Sydney 1992
You have to watch the Live performance of this song, which is sooo much better.
My opinion.
The live version will send chills through you, he sings amazing but the emotion is unbelievable
I love listening to John Farnham! Thanks, Matt, my friend, great reaction!👍👏🇷🇺
THANKS PAVEL!
Farnsey the man

I second this comment. 👌
Wasn't J.C Superstar brilliant, it had the best of Australia's performers, brilliant!

This mans voice is incredible it just hits different

Yes definitely 👍
Yes why did they send him this version ?! Disappointed much
According to the London School of Epidemiology, this performance of Gethsemane by John Farnham is the leading cause of Stinky Face.

The thing that amazes me is that they did this every night...and maybe sometimes twice day for matinees!

Gethsemane sounds a lot like "get sesame," it is a garden outside of Jerusalem.
There’s a YT video where someone posted what he thinks were the 10 best ever performances of Gethsemane. It’s obvious that he never heard John Farnham’s version.
I had never heard John sing that before. He never lets you down. Us Aussies pronounce it Ozzie.
This ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ should be released as a live video.

John played Jesus in the stage production of Jesus Christ Superstar ! ... I saw it live ... incredible production with John playing the perfect Jesus.
Thanks Matt. Glad that you reacted to John in JCS. This song was a dramatic point of the JCS musical story.
I think we need to make you an honorary Aussie Matt !
You listen to music like a muso does. That's why I like your reactions.

Look up the pronunciation of Gethsemane. This is Jesus talking to God prior to going to the cross.
This is not the best version, the video of the show Jesus Christ Superstar live is far superior to this John is always better live.
