I’m am confused on the order of operations… so I am going to assume the order goes something like this.. setup bow and eye everything to square.. then sight in enough to get on target at 20-30 yards.. then broadhead tune followed up by 1st/2nd/3rd axis shoot in adjustments? Also should you try this with multiple broadheads and what broadheads are recommended for tuning if you plan to shoot mechanicals with smaller vanes. I’m just not sure my smaller vanes will stabilize a fixed blade to begin with.

It appears to me that the variability of your accuracy (with either field tips or broadheads) is sufficient to render your "broadhead tuning" nothing more that pure coincidence? If one shoots enough arrows, and just chooses those instances where the field tip and broadhead hit close to each other, can it really be "tuning"? Also, it would have been nice to see you shoot a group of just field tips, and then a group of broadheads (not the same arrow, but rather 3 or 4 separate arrows, or better yet, the same 3 or 4 arrows just changing the points) to see how each of the different arrows flew and grouped? Perhaps your actual tuning session was more structured than your video appeared to me? And lastly, perhaps it just my OCD having been a statistician that leaves me unconvinced? To each his own.......

Your just chasing your tail on this one.. if you can’t shoot good enough to touch your arrows every time you will be constantly moving all over. If you hit the 2” circle with both. Your probably fine. Move out to further distance and check again

Man, thank goodness for UA-cam and podcasts! Back in the late 1900’s, telling my age, you had to know someone who knew something in order to get the information that is being seen by thousands now on these platforms!
We were told that the broadheads just shot different than your field tips, typically high and right, so you just re-sighted in your bow to your broadheads when it got close to season. Sure wish we had known better! So thank you for providing this resource of knowledge. I’m really enjoying both of your guy’s channels and the wood stove conversations!

One of the most comprehensive broadhead tuning videos out there. Thank you.
Been going through all this again over the last few weeks getting ready for this season and had to cycle through about 6 other videos from other UA-camrs to get all the info that y’all put in this one. Also had to sift through a couple other videos that have the horizontal rest adjustment backwards.
The method you described is absolutely correct. If someone has to do the exact opposite, go back to square 1, something’s up with that setup. Timing out, wrong arrow spine, etc.
Question: do you like the high roller target? I need to replace my 18-1 (no complaints on it) but have been looking at the high roller. Specifically for broad heads.

Nice video! Tim's arrow looks a little short for my taste. Broadhead is right behind his fingers. If there is a failure of the rest or your drawing in a hurry and arrow bounces of the rest, that may be very bad. I like hunting arrows a little longer.

I've always wondered, though, why no one shoots a field tip-arrow through paper after they've broadhead tuned their bow. To show if the tear is still a perfect bullet-hole. Just curious.

@joshandtim Please help me understand the contradiction in your broadhead tuning. On @elkshape video “ALL Broadhead TUNING….” MFJJ said to move the broadhead to the field point in the horizontal. However, in this video MFJJ says the opposite…Move the field tip to the broadhead in the horizontal and move the broadhead toward the field tip in the vertical. Which is it and why the contradiction? Thanks

Help! BH are constantly hitting to the right of the FTs and will not correct. Am I underspined as stated by MFJJ?
Matthews phase 4. 31 inch draw, 75 pound mods, 250 spine victory TKO’s, hundred grain iron Will broadhead.
OK here’s my question. Do my field tips have to hit where my broad heads are hitting? Why don’t I tune everything for the broad heads to be perfect for hunting and leave the field tips in the garage for next season‘s TAC.

I know this is a month old. Not sure if you’ll get this but since PAs season doesn’t start until October I’ve just started checking things over. Decided to give fixed blades a try this year with the new V3X. My left and rights are good but I’m consistently 4 inches high at 20 and 30. Tries moving the rest slightly down twice maybe 1/16th total and did nothing. Was told by two bow shops my timing is on and it might just be the way it is. I have noticed the original shop set my nock height a little low so the center of the arrow is running maybe through the bottom of the burger hole. Would raising everything up so it’s center of the burger hole help? I’ve also heard some bows like nock high and mine appears to be 90 or very slightly nock high but not an 1/8th like I’ve been told. Just wondering if the master FMJJ would have any suggestions. Love you guys both especially with the technical content. Has helped me gain confidence in adjusting my bow on my own during the tuning process. Thanks!!

I haven’t seen a pro shop with even half of the knowledge Josh has in over 20 years. Nobody seems to care enough about their job, and your equipment to take any of the proper tuning steps. They take a bow out of the box, slap accessories on, tie a peep and d loop, and send you on your way. The only way we can get the most out of our equipment, is to either buy the press and draw board and do our own work, or drive to Washington and ask for MFJJ. Lol
It’s sad and frustrating, but we all need to learn to work on our own bows

I don’t understand why people think bareshafting is so much work and difficult. If your bareshaft flies there is literally no difference in your field points and broadheads. Plus there is no doubt in your mind that all of your arrows fly well. Please don’t check one arrow with a broadhead and call it good. CHECK EVERY ARROW. Remove all uncertainty if you are going to shoot at an animal.

I'm relatively new to high-end compound bows. What is the point of doing the initial paper tune if you have to move the rest to tune the broadhead anyway? Also, if I were to dedicate my bow to only hunting, could I just tune to the broad heads only and not worry about field points? From what I could gather, you were tuning for a happy medium between the two? I've been watching a few of your videos, and they've been quite helpful, cheers!

Good video, great info but you guys are splitting hairs here. You're not a machine, there's going to be some human error unless the bow is strapped to a bench and every shot is identical. Similar to a rifle in a lead sled vs shoulder fired. Realistically, hit both in a 2-3" circle, move back, check and repeat. When you get tired, stop and take a break....
That actually brings up a good video idea. Do a best score when fresh and once you've shot 50-100+ arrows. See where you're accuracy starts to deteriorate.

There are so many catch phrases and buzz words in the sport now that it is "popular". Focus on the BASICS, like paper tuning. From the engineers at several companies I have worked with since about the same time Josh started his store, a bow is either in tune or it is out of tune. There is no such thing as "Super tuning". Spend your hard earned money on lessons on how to properly hold your bow, anchor, and build the right arrow for the bow you are using. Then go shoot. Josh said to comment below...I would comment on Tim's grip being a hair too deep into the center of his palm.
By the way Josh, I can't tell you how many times I have repeated what you said on the whiteboard in forums, only to have keyboard pros tell me I am wrong... Thanks for the confirmation. On a side note, that white dot Tim is shooting at is a lot bigger than his sight pin at 20 yards, maybe a smaller point of aim (black dot or white sticker) on that target could help him to aim more precisely.

MFJJ If you took a bow that was tuned and shooting arrows with broadheads and practice tips in the same spot, then slightly moved the rest to the right and shot you would see the target tips hitting slightly right and broadheads hitting even farther right. You would not move the rest to the right to correct. It needs to move back to the left. Please explain.

Nice video! Also guys, keep in mind there’s always the factor of human error. I know the goal is to make them hit exactly the same every time you shoot but it’s difficult to do that constantly without having some flyers right.
I’d say start fresh (rest) after doing this excersice for a long time and then try again, then when you think you got it right, rest again and try it the next day to see if your first two shots (arrows) are touching, this is when I’d call it good.

One must consider the abilities of the archer when broadhead tuning. You can’t just pick the one time someone hits the same hole and make your adjustment based on that one instance. For 90%+ archers, being within an inch of one another would be close enough as they’re likely not consistently capable of a group much smaller than that.

Not a dumb question at all. I agree with you - 1-2 inches here or there at 20 yards is so hard to tell if it’s the shooter or the tune. No offense to Tim, he seems to be a great shooter but I personally feel that only Levi Morgan or a shooter of the like would be able to tell if their broadhead tune is off due to a 1-2 inch discrepancy at 20 yards. Here’s what I do - I make sure my sight tape is on at 20-50 with field points. Then I proceed to testing each of my 6 arrows in my quiver with a broadhead on them. If they all plane R (for example) relative to field point impact, then I know I need to move my rest and it’s not just a one off arrow that is planing. Can’t base your tune off of one arrow because some arrows just don’t like to behave. If you get most arrows flying true with broadheads and one or two is planing, turn the nock and see if it clean it up - it often will and now you have every arrow in your quiver broadhead ready

Failed to mention - I normally like to test each arrow at 40 or 50 because that way I can very clearly tell if it’s me or my tune because tune errors are very obvious at 40+

That works pretty good thanks for the video the only problem is I didn't glue my insert good enough so I lost my expensive broadhead hard lesson learned😂😂😂

I’ve learned over the years that it is better to work on this more than ONE shooting session. We all have better days than others so a few different day sessions will usually give you a better feedback. That’s obvious. And people don’t shoot their broad head’s enough for whatever reason. Buy more than one pack and shoot them. Things change and it’s vitally important to know that throughout the season your arrows are hitting BEHIND THE PIN!

Sweet vid! Helped me a lot! Curious, when you feel good about field and BH placement, and call it good, do you assume then that the rest location is correct for all BH's of the same type and sight there after?!

Can y'alls please do a video on grip, grip pressure, what 'adverse heel pressure' is, etc.? I'm struggling with tail left tears and feel it's my grip but I can't figure it out.

Now go back and paper test after broadhead tuning.(it should be out of tune again) So in fact paper testing in general is useless. Shoot a bare shaft to get the correct spine sighting in the bow left/right and up/down walk back tuning. Now going strait to broadhead tuning.

Great job on the video. It’s videos like this that has helped me build my setups and get incrementally better at it. Saved the video because I know I’ll have to come back to it again. Now if I could just kill a buck with a bow, that’d be great.

Listen, Tim, this Josh golfing idea is the best content idea you've had! You absolutely must do a driving range swing workshop for him or a series of lessons... It'd be hilarious and really good for people getting into golf!

Not gonna lie, I’ll take advantage of your code on Josh’s store as long as it’s available. Used it on my Bushnell Broadhead rangefinder a couple week’s ago. The price after the code was untouchable by any other shop or internet store
