You'd be just as bad at it, apparently. That's a Cadillac from the '30s, it's a 3-speed stick shift without gear locations printed on the knob. The shift patterns were wonky back then, too. It's extremely impressive that he managed to pull away at all, let alone find a gear.

This is one of the very few videos in the genre that actually succeeds in doing its job and keeps the context as far away as possible in the most nonsensical and entertaining ways possible. Original Star Trek was an odd mix of good and bad writing mixed with good and bad effects. And the ratio seemed to shift with every series.
It could use a remake, but not like the movies.
