      it would appear to be a stone example of a building technique using wood and nails. the "odd rods" with different facets looks like a model of the different rods in use. your temple could be a school for builders or the builder was having some fun. have you come across any of those rods in ancient buildings or digs?

    In all my carpentry work, I pre-drill every hole and this keeps the wood from splitting. My best guess is that ancient Indian builders knew how to soften the granite and then predrilled every connection. Inserting a hardened nail into a slightly softened and predrilled hole might explain everything. Now, how then learned to soften granite, I cannot imagine.

    • @evelynzlon9492
      @evelynzlon9492 Рік тому +10

      Ancient people figured out how to bend boulders n stuff. Or the granite could've been pierced with metals nail first to create openings for granite nails of the same size and shape. My guess is this roof is representative but the architects were not trifling. We've seen that ancient Indian artisans commissioned to build important works were meticulous and they didn't skimp on the elbow grease. It's probably assembled as if it were functional and partly made of metal, with continuous granite rods inserted through the rafters.

      Agreed. It is highly improbable that anyone could assemble such a structure with the battens and rods. The nails are certainly carved regardless. But even carving such deep and precise undercut shapes in granite is astonishing. We can see in in Chinese Jade carvings, so it is certainly possible. But so precisely and repeatedly on such a scale as this is mind boggling.
      I can only assume they had diamond grit at the very least. One often forgets that Granite is not only hard, but the grains are irregular in size and vary in hardness, so using modern tools, the edges of the cut can crack off irregularly, following the grain, if the cutting tool is not running at the proper speed and feed rate. The same is true with hammer and chisel. I’d love to see these blocks up close!

I would be surprised if we could approach the quality of such work today. And BTW, how in the world could they carve the back side of all these pieces and once done, hoist it into position without breaking it. Although granite is hard, when cut into slabs it will flex and break if not supported every so many feet.

    Your explanation about this being carved in unit blocks is right on. We have worked with granite stone masons for hand dressed artistic carvings. Nails, rafters, ropes of granite is seriously far fetched as longer it gets, the more brittle it gets and add weathering, natural micro grains and cracks. Blocks they are. Well done Sir.

    Wow! Excellent finding Praveen. If you observe some other temples, we see similar roofs. For example in Chennakesava Temple at Belur, we see similar roof (behind Madanikas) - with more intricated (floral) formations and also in multiple layers. I am sure they are not wooden because of the history of the temple and almost entire temple is make of rocks. Hoyasaleswara Temple at Halebidu also has roof with multiple layers of beams (some curved at the outmost layer) and again we see thousands of bolts. Awesome technology to learn from these ancient temples. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

    A detail shocked me ..the " nails" . Their size reduces the section of the cylindric part which crosses the beam. So it's not used in building.
    Rock ( granite) or concrete have a high compressive strength but low tensile strength, it's the reason why rebars are used to resist against tensile. In this case , granite rebars can't resist to tensile strength and aren't usefull because there is no tensile in this direction or part of the building structure .

    Okay, I think first off; the entire structure made of granite appears impossible for many reasons. However, for ease of assembly, your animation of holes and rods and granite pins looks most logical. But manufacturing long granite rods would be extremely brittle and would crack and break upon assembly. So, I agree that your theory of appearance is correct, but the actual finished creation by hand carved methods, I find impossible. Not impossible by proof of existence… Must be that the ancient pictation of many powerful gods like Vimina, must be a clue. An unfamiliar ancient technique and technology for sure.
