What Makes STUDIO WRESTLING So Special?

- DAVE KNOWS that TV Studio Wrestling is now back with NWA Powerrr and the National Wrestling Alliance. And it's been getting such a great reception from wrestling fans both old and new alike. But this is not something new, as the practice of Television Studio Wrestling has been around for quite some time. And there are plenty of reasons why it's just so great. 7 of which are the subject of today's episode.

I love Nwa, It’s a breath of fresh air with me being 18 and the only other studio wrestling show I’ve seen was when Tna had the impact zone, But I Wish they had theme songs for their wrestlers

James check out MLW Fusion It's on youtube or bein sports channel. It's a really good promotion you might enjoy it. It's a little old school and new school with some hardcore at times
The "typical NXT crowd" filmed in a studio at full sail university. Another great example of studio wreslting.
NXT is very much like Studio Wrestling. There are so many things they have in common with Powerrr
I think the main difference is that the "promo" work is done in the ring at nxt, and they still have backstage segments.
I may be wrong but can you hear the commentary table from the studio audience at power or no?. You tend not to ba able at most arena live shows.

The low cost was by design. These studio wrestling shows were primarily designed as commercials to get people into the big house shows. That's why you rarely saw anything of real importance happen on the shows with major angles and title changes occurring at these live events (there are exceptions of course. You'd get heel/face turns and secondary title changes from time to time)
The wwe title has changed at house shows numerous times.. atleast 12 times
@@smhgaming3259 I'm not talking about the WWE. I'm talking about the old studio wrestling shows. You rarely saw a primary title change hands on an episode of Mid South for example. They'd save those for the paid live house shows.
NWA has become my favorite wrestling promotion. Great presentation too.

Thanks for the shout out to Chilly Billy Cardille, a legend in Pittsburgh. Studio Wrestling Host, Radio Host, Horror Movie Host, and one of the cast of Night of the Living Dead where he played himself.
I'm not o!d enough to remeber Studio Wrestling from Pittsburgh, but with the Apter Magazines growing up, plus UA-cam and the internet today, when I think of Studio Wrestling, I think Memphis and Lance Russell.
Jeff Jarrett should have did studio wrestling with GFW like he did with TNA.
JJ should have done a lot of things

As soon as i seen studio wrestling. I immediately think of Dusty Rhodes and Rick Flair promos on WCW back in the day. It's what made me love those guys when i was a young mark.!! Good stuff Dave.

Thanks for the memories! I live in Pittsburgh and have met many of the wrestlers that appeared on the show.NWA Power have a more modern feel, but I still love it.
I like my wrestling like how I like my food always trying something different sum can be in studio sum in stadiums sum in bingo halls the more places the easier for fans to go see

It's such a good show
I used to go to KCOP in Los Angeles to see it live in the studio. Tickets were priced right...FREE! Just request them in a stamped self addressed envelope and they would arrive in a week for a scheduled event next month. ALL the seats felt like front row seats. Plus it had a more intimate experience than a stadium. You could hear all the grunts and hits from the wrestlers. Awesome memories!

This brings me back to being a little kid in the 80s watching NWA and WWF. The NWA studio show always felt more intimate and more like real sports than the WWF big time showbiz feel.

Good vid on a well-thought out opinion.
One of the reasons I prefer wrestling from the 50s through the 80s/90s to today's shows is the real-life feel I get from the more-human, more-intimate scale of studio venues.

I liked when WWE used to use a studio. Newsroom or whatever the hell it was. They'd cut to promos then they'd send you out to the arena for matches.
Yeah, it'd be cool if we had less of the show be shouting and goofy stuff in the ring

@@DaveKnowsWrestling i agree. I stopped watching for a few weeks after he left, not in protest, i was just bummed out he wasnt on it anymore. It was refreshing to see pro wrestling show instead of a sports entertainment show
Studio Wrestling on Channel 11 in Pittsburgh was the Highlight of my week when I was growing up. All we had were rabbit ears or antennas on the roof to watch TV back then. We got 3 or 4 channels,in black and white. Bruno was Da Man and Chilly Billy would also do Chiller Theatre that night..scary movies and entertaining schtick from Bill(who also had a part in Night of the Living Dead..filmed in and around the Pittsburgh area by Horror Icon,George Romero. I've watched the new NWA studio Wrestling and it really DOES have a different vibe because of the venue. TNA was doing this and NXT was kind of doing it, also,as well as ROH. What a time to be a Wrestling fan...We can watch countless Indy shows,Lucha Libre,Japanese and British Isles wrestling from the comfort of our homes...BUT..Go and SEE the shows in person and you'll know Why people like me Love it! Another reason that studio wrestling is great is how Billy Corgan himself said in his announcement a few months ago, that studio wrestling is small & intimate (like a pressure cooker) that made fans want to go to the big shows if the wrestling promotion itself wanted to use larger arenas for their big supercard events.

NWA Powerr did a great job to introduce all of their personalities. I had never heard of Tim Storm until Episode 1 and by the end I knew everything I needed to know to get into the main event with him and Aldis

Studio wrestling is something I never saw growing up. It's a smart direction and done well. Can't praise the NWA enough for the great job they are doing.

I am a fan of Powerrr. My main concern is that their talent pool seems rather shallow right now
It is a short roster, but they have a shorter show and I do think they will gain more in time

This intimate feel and regular, consistent audience Dave speaks of can-but not always does- also apply to indie wrestling.
Oh yes absolutely, independents are very much good for that feeling as well
Studio Wrestling for me means the company and people that work for them be they wrestlers or otherwise saves money and the staff can live near by the Studio so that means they can go home ever night and that has to be the biggest plus in my book :)

You also forgot about about shows like "Wrestling at The Chase" in St. Louis and who can forget Ole Anderson's "Georgia Championship Wrestling /World Championship Wrestling" at 6:05/5:05 pm.And also when its so up close and in your face,we see absolutely everything Unfold right in front of your eyes,as far as the storylines and Angles go.and back in the era of Kayfabe a lot of people were so invested they got lost in the presentation(way before the Internet "destroyed" Kayfabe )the only problem I have with NWA Powerr is that sometimes it leans a little too much towards wwe retro satirical series Southpaw Championship Wrestling(if you haven't seen it Dave,drop everything and Watch it .NOW😆)that and the logos (some of the belts) are TOO throwback for my taste.but that's just me.
Studio wrestling the way it was done in the old NWA times, with territories, regional champions and stars and big shows outside of the studios was the perfect balance/blend, IMO. At first, I loved the new NWA because of the nostalgia factor, but they present their wrestlers and storylines in a consistent and great way, so they do hook you for the long term.
I really enjoyed Lucha Undergrounds "Temple" too, plus the presentation and style which was unique.

I enjoy NWA power they bring back a lot of great talents and show the Indy Stars and their relationship with Ring of Honor

Been watching NWA Powerrr it's been great thus far and got to thinking wasn't RAW taped at the Manhattan center for the first few months back in 1993 giving it a studio feel to the show ?
It was taped early on and that's something that gets lost on a lot of ppl

I love the nwa. It new but has that old look too it.
Best of both worlds
Studio allows you to get the lighting right. When you use as studio it's less challenging to get high quality lighting. And that shows on Powerrr. Notice how good the lighting is in the ring and for the promo stand.
The lighting is professional and no dark shadows in ring.
Studio makes wrestlers seem larger than life. Tommy Rich got over huge because the studio environment allowed him to "own the room" and he was wearing a shirt, buttons open and tight jeans allowing female viewers to crush on him. And that's why southern territories attracted young loud energetic crowd with lots of females. Southern studio rasslin had sex appeal that WWF big arena format didn't.
Same was true for Road Warriors on WTBS. Viewers could appreciate the promo and muscles and face paint. It was easier to connect with wrestlers.
WWF @ Allentown killed a lot of that although they did set up studio lights and leave them there between tapings every three weeks.
Cameramen know what to expect.
Lighting.. a very undervalued aspect by fans. Glad you brought it up

@@DaveKnowsWrestling I can understand. Eli Drake is one of the better promo shooters in the game today. He definitely adds star powerr along with Nick "Magnus " Aldis and The Cowboy James Storm. Personally the studio concept is a great idea.

Powerrr is keeping my interest in PW alive . I stopped watching WWE after summer slam and AEW is too pretentious and nerdy for me at the moment . I just feel like nobody cares, but in reality it’s just me that fell out of love with the products.
Except Powerrr. It’s what we all needed .

I remember the old territory days. Billy Corrigan is a genius in music and wrestling. A great time for wrestling with AEW, Impact, NWA and NJPW making their respective marks and styles. My onlyngripe with NWA is their belts are tiny and the for the most part horrid looking. TT belts look like a bad weld job. The Women's title looks like a WW1 vets gravestone

I think your second point about the crowd can be an advantage and a disadvantage. The studio audience at the Power tapings can be awesome and help put a guy over, but they can also be really annoying.

Studio Wrestling and it's practices are something that has been around in many forms.. as stated NWA is not the only one to do so

I say, if it's filmed in a television studio it counts. However, a lot of aspects of Studio Wrestling do take place even outside of that condition

I've never understood why traveling became a thing? It is a money pit. Jim Crockett Promotions they had their weekly show in a studio and they only traveled for big shows and they were only in Greensboro North Carolina and Chicago. TNA at their highest everything happened at The IMPACT Zone. A set on tv who knows the difference between a studio in Connecticut and The Barclays Center?
It isn't a money pit. The expenses are bigger, but the money you make is bigger as well. A traveling show can charge more, because the crowd won't have as many chances to watch it. Also, keeping a home studio can be a hassle sometimes. TNA suffered from not being able to charge for tickets on any of her shows, with all the venue coming from TV.
I don't think NXT right now is considered as studio wrestling but...what kind of wrestling should we call NXT as?

I don't watch Powerrr because it's hip or whatever. I'm loving it because it's been off our screens so long that the concept is fresh again. Whereas both WWE and AEW are doing the same flashy styles of product that's now old, stale and totally boring now.
