Duncan Hot Stack in the bridge and a Lollar Firebird in the neck has been my favorite Tele set for a while now.
I liked the Lollar pickup the most ; it sounded the most like what I want my tele to sound like .
The boys are back!!!🎉🎉
I really like the tone of the StewMac pickup to replicate what I think of when I want that classic tele' tone. I have a SD Hot Rails pickup in the first tele I built though for the exact same reason you mentioned Matt!😂 At 16 there was something just too cool about putting a humbucker where a single coil "belongs"!
Very interesting discussion! After many years trying all kinds of bespoke pickups in my Teles, I’ve settled on hot rails. The sound is one thing, but also the conveniency factors. My vintage 73’ Tele however, I keep factory stock with Fender singles. Keep the vids coming!
This is exactly the video I needed, thank you!
I love the bridge pickup on a Tele, or middle position too, but as I really loved the way the StewMac sounded. That one just really made me jive with it, it's not nearly as ice-picky as a standard tele IMO, I thought it sounded very round for a tele bridge, very impressed with it.
U guys are getting in a big rabbit hole looking at different tele pickups . Good luck .
Hey guys thanks much for the comparo.....it's always great to hear different stuff....I've used 6 different Tele bridge pickups and always seem to go back to a Duncan Quarterpounder....a little fatter and punchier like a hot P90...anyway, Thanks again for the video....
I had those originally and I didn't like the muddiness of them. Much happier with Fender Texas Specials but I'm also going to upgrade to Lollars and I love the hot rails sound.
Funny I watched your guys stewnac aerosol nitro series and I was like I need some paint sticks. Searched the web and ended up making 4 of em on the table saw and rounding em over with a router. Used to have hot rails in my 83 telecaster. They respond well to distortion and overdrive. As far as vintage tone goes. Fender pure vintage 64s are my favorite over Lindy Fralin blues specials. They are slightly hotter alnico 5 pups. But not enough to lose the twang. Just got a Lollar J street bridge pup because 8.7k is a good match for my micawber project and the Seymour Duncan 59 neck humbucker at 7.6k. Think right now 59s and 64s are my favorite. Generation 4 noiseless interests me but I haven't had a chance to throw em in a build yet ultra noiseless I'm not a fan off, too surreal. Do like the possibilities of the reissue CuNiFe humbuckers. Like the guitars I dreamed about as a kid, but missed out on because of my age (54, what's my age again?) Now, we have a chance to check em out, at last! Built a 72 classic ash maple thinline with CuNiFe's love it. 525k pots though and a modern profile neck. Not 1meg and 7.25 radius. A lot of pickups out there to choose from. Just watch a lot UA-cam videos and ask yourself what kind of sound are you trying to project. Think there is a pickup for everyone and every genre. Or you buy a stewmac pickup winder and custom build your own.
Do you think you guys would ever offer your tidalcasters in kit form? This is a channel that a lot of aspiring luthier’s tend to watch.
Wow haven't seen you guys in so long, Thank for crawling out from under that stone :)
Jeff Buckley had a stacked lead Tele bridge pickup and his sound is awesome!
I'm actually getting some of their Phat Staple pickups for myself, I'd be interested to hear what you guys think of those.
I liked StewMac and Lollar. This is a proper Tele sound.
The hot rail was way darker than the hot stack. Slightly hotter too, almost sounded like tone was half way rolled off. I’m all for the hot stack, it’s a powerful sound that takes some getting use to and delicacy when playing it but it’s crystal clear as well as rich
I'd really love to hear your opinions on the Seymour Dincan Quarter Pounder Tele pickups. I'm considering upgrading to a set currently. Glad to see you guys back !! Keep it up. The vids are always entertaining and informative. 🍻
I am a hobby builder and have built mostly tele style guitars. I put a quarter lb Seymour Duncan in my third build and a hand wound P90 in the neck, and that combo was exceptional imo, the Seymour Duncan quarter lb-er bridge pup was a great pair and balance for a fairly standard and stronger P90 in the neck. I prefer to wind my own pups but in this case, the hotter tele bridge pickup was a great choice. Def recommend the quarter pounder.
@@MegaMoxieman Awesome to hear.. I actually pulled the trigger on a set. I figured they'd be a good match for me since I mainly play Rock and Blues.
I like the Lollar, it's more Telecaster character, but still the quite hot output matches better with a P90 or Humbucker on the neck. Which I prefer, because it gives you the option of classic Tele bridge sounds, but can flip it over for smoother but still articulate sounds, e.g. for Jazz, Soul, rounded driven leads on the neck. I find that the most versatile combo. Then I don't find myself ever much feeling the need for a Les Paul. That kind of Telecaster, Strat/Mustang/Jazzmaster and a 335 covers the three main guitar sounds I need.
I dig the Lollar.
I have tele mutt with an 83 bullet neck. I just discovered it has the red top SD hot stack im the bridge and the matching stacked lipstick pickup in the neck. The hot stack I’m this demo would have sounded better if you added some treble in the amp. I thought the stew Macs sounded nice, though all my other guitars have Lollar pickups.
What type of pot was in the SD Hot Rail guitar? I had the same pickup in my tele, but with a 250k pot, which made it super dark sounding. Swapped it for a full size 500k CTS pot and got that top end back that was lacking.
As a 35+ year country picker, the Lollar J Street is the one I would pick. It is bright but not that "chop your head off" bright, considerably more complex than the StewMac.
I would use the Hot Rail for my neck pup though....
Sometimes, I'll install a middle Strat pup, if my routing is deep enough to accept a larger 5 position switch and some extra wiring.
I've played steel since in was 13... I'm 62... for another month. I've used 100 different pickups. They are the "shoes" of the guitar... some like flip-flops, some like lace-to-toe boots, and everything in-between. It's all up to the human. Make it easy to swap 'em in/out and let the player do his thing. (give slack or a "mounting post" in the body for swap-out). You are welcome! : )
Gooood afternoon from central Florida! Hope everyone has a great afternoon!
I like the hot stack better, However its a very wide range of tonal possibilities with different pickup combos.
Just as with other pickups, there are a multitude of variables in Tele bridge pickups. At the end of the day, it’s bobbins, wire, and magnets. There is no secret sauce and no one has the corner on “ the best”. There are great winders all over the land.
You can spend as little as $50 or as much as $200 or more. If you believe the $200 puts you in some sort of higher tonal class, go for it.
i thought stew mac was awesome and would stick out best in mix. lollar was similar but more oomph!
I have a staple pole bridge in my tele can find it on reverb. Sounds like a slightly brighter p90. It’s my favorite. Going to mod my strat to take one.
Matt, the mustache was the right choice.
Also, if you've always had it, then the problem is you guys for not putting out recent videos and not me for not remembering what you look like.
I've heard quite a few people like Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder pickups. I haven't tried one so I don't know if I'm gonna like it though.
In fact I don't own a Tele. May be one day.
My question is on neck. So since you started making these I been interested, but you started with 9.5 radius. However, that's the whole reason I don't have a fender tele. Can not stand that radius. You don't have radius on the site for your description. Are you still doing the 9.5?
For what I want out of a Tele, I vote Lollar all day, every day. The hum-Bs sound great, but if I want humbucker tone, I want it in a 335.
I’m a lipstick tube nut as well as a DeArmond gold foil freak. How about some A-B shootouts on those?
That Lollar all day!
Nice compare!
For me Stew Mac wins and the J st is second. I thought the hot stack sounded horrible
hmmmmm Damien Bacci convinced me there's too much negativity 'out there' anyway/already so... Here's a comment and a thumbs up for your algorithm. It's a quality guitar played well...
The stack
Lollar.
Stew Mack all the way.
For convenience and coverage in a band situation, a warmer pick up in the bridge position is more convenient, unless playing only country music. For me personally, classic bright bridge position is annoying and tiresome on ear after a while.
nice video but please gain stage your signal. it's clipping all over :(
No overdrive 🤨
Lollar Vintage >>> the rest.
stew mac very tele twanging, then Lollar-seymours were dead sounding.
I agree. The Stew Mac sound much brighter to me while the others sounded a bit woolly. But each to their own. I suppose it would depend on the sound you're looking for and amp settings.
I've always found Duncan's a bit too outmealy for my taste. Lollars sound nice and fruity, probably my favorite here. StewMac is mid.
Electric guitars are boring lol. Stick to accoustic
I like ‘em all.
I'm in the *guy who likes stacked pickups* camp. 60 cycle hum sucks. The slightly mellower tone is actually a huge benefit to Tele and Strat style guitars. Anyone who parrots "they're sterile sounding" is listening with boomer ears.
I like the stacks as well, but thought they would have benefited by turning up the treble on the amp.
A lot of them boomers know how to use the tone knob and twist the wires on the pickups and also shield it.
Adjusting pickup height makes a difference also.
I always prefer a vintage bridge pickup on a tele, at least for 5 minutes until I notice the blood dripping from my earlobes 🫠
