The intro makes the Plantagenets sound like sexy, ruthless overlords who were brilliant tacticians - but what's ironic is that it's a legacy of incompetence as much as monarchy. Henry's son Richard I didn't give a fig for England, and his ransom crippled England's economy. Then Richard's brother John lost all the family's French possessions and had to sign the Magna Carta to survive politically. Then John's son Henry III was a weak shadow of a king. Really the only powerful Plantagenet kings past then were Edwards I & III, and the usurper Henry IV and his son Henry V. The Yorkists before Henry VII were on very unsteady ground, which is why they didn't last long.
Henry II, Edward I and Edward III were all talented kings (although both Henry and Edward's talents declined markedly as they aged). Henry IV was a marked improvement over Richard II but he was also deeply miserable as King. By 1410, Henry V was effectively running the country. Speaking of Henry V, he was a talented king who probably would've completed Edward III's goal of kingship over both England and France, but for his early death. Henry VI was a disaster. Edward IV was a puppet for the first half of his reign, although in the second half after dispatching of Warwick, he asserted himself admirably. Richard III was not nearly so bad as the play makes him, but he almost assuredly had his nephews murdered after promising his older brother (whom he had previously been very loyal to) that he would protect them.
@@lawrence142002 Yup I know all that and I didn't say Henry II was incompetent. Edward IV's best days were on campaign for his father Richard's claim, and then toppling Henry VI. After that, he faded as king. And Richard III doesn't even deserve to be on the rolls of kingship.

Slander. Richard I was the most competent Plantagenet king, appointing many competent officials who weren't greedy and had the political acumen to balance out his ambitious younger brother John. His ransom definitely did not cripple England, and he was on track to even subjugate the whole of France when he unluckily died. It was John that ultimately undid the Plantagenet possessions. Richard even left him a powerful network of alliances and loyal lords against Philip II of France, but he had to alienate so many of them, even his own mother.
When Henry the 2nd son rebelled with his brothers, I bet 100$ that there was one of those weird family moments at the end of it where Henry the 2nd was like:
"I'm so proud of you, son. You were so close , you know?"
"Yeah, pop. I really gave that Ole rebellion a whirl."
Henry did not kill Beckett. His knights did after reacting to one of the King's frequent rants. Henry was blamed because they were his knights and it was his rant.
I believe "Who will rid me of this turbulent priest" was all the "prompting" Henry's knights needed!!

He allowed it by making his barons peers and succumbing to their views and lust for vengeance on Becket, and the opinions of the women in his court who resented the Saxon from his very origin as Henry’s companion.
These are fantastic documentaries, we have such rich history.
For now, but not for long I fear. Identity politics and historical revisionism will erase English history, indeed ALL Western history, as racist, misogynistic, homophobic debacle and disaster.

He spent the vast mojority of his time galavanting around like a spoilt brat (at vast expence to the English people, for whom he did NOTHING), only to get captured and imprisoned (and thus screw the country again for literally a King's ransom), only to return and screw the country out of yet MORE money, only to f*ck off again and die of the shits! And by doing so he bankrupted the country so that his brother King John could do nothing to protect the continental territories, and thereby take all the rap! And what's more, his wife Berengaria of Navarre, so called Queen of England, is the ONLY so called English monarch NEVER to have even set foot on English soil!

The Eleanor of Aquitaine trilogy by Elizabeth Chadwick is an excellent look at both Louis VII and Henry ll’s reign from the queen’s POV. E of A was a formidable force of nature herself.

I still am not sure why she felt the need to betray Henry he was a relatively nice husband for the time he let her rule her domain in France he let her get away with a lot let her hold power and she turned all her sons against him .

Eh it’s hard to say if Henry wanted Beckett dead or not. I’m inclined to think NOT because Beckett’s death caused him so many problems.

I think one can divide Henry's reign into two parts. The first with the legal reforms which are the base of English law today and the second, documented here, from 1170, which was the fighting with his family.

John may have been Henry's favorite, but he was nothing like him. Henry had both administrative and soldierly ability. He did pass on his talent as a soldier to Richard, but his other sons were next to useless. John was an incompetent thief who loved to rape (even by the relaxed standard of the era) and he murdered his own nephew Arthur (son of his deceased older brother Geoffrey) in order to make sure that he got the crown.
I was lambasted by people for saying that paying for UA-cam was wrong. I have to admit I was in the wrong. Yes it may be a Little expensive but I find that I am now watching UA-cam without adverts than watching basic sky. Yes sad I know but worth the money. There is so much content on here

greatest king of a nostalgic empire, he had incredible emotional intelligence and personal bravery, capacity to see through his mistakes and rise in body and soul to be forgiven and win hearts and minds. That is what makes a near perfect successful medieval king. This depiction is always inspiring to watch, his absolution and love.

Dan Jones never totally speak bad about the Tudors, when it comes of Henry VII and his poor claim to the Throne, Jones prefer to divert to his mother, Margaret, how much she loved her son and how much she sacrifice to rise him to power, nothing about the Tudors descending from a bastard line of the Plantagenet, that some of the nobles families of his own era believed that he descended from a bastard son of a maid.

to Chinon were he apparently went missing within the castle causing a little panic to his personal protection people.
He was discovered in an obscure room sitting on a stool working a piece of leather when found they tore a strip off him
complaining it was difficult to do the task asked of them when he f**** *** to do the work of a tanners wife.

Documents are more likely to get damaged if you are wearing gloves. You can feel them more easily with bare hands and so are much gentler. This way is best practice.
@@JoHarris68 Fabric is more abrasive than fingertips. I think they have to wash their hands to remove excess oils and lipids before handling the old paper.
Common misconception that the oils in fingers are damaging to old material. In fact the material on gloves and fabric are a lot more abrasive and damaging to the material. So long as your hands are properly washed and dried before and after handling it's safer to use your bare hands when handling old artefacts.

I take great offense to the tag line referring that Henry II murdered Thomas Beckett. He didn't. He took responsibility for it as it was four of his knights that did the deed, as a true ruler should, but all he did was voice his displeasure at his old friend.
You make these history lessons so intriguing to watch. I can't turn away.

Thomas Beckett's dad was also the Sheriff of London. Grisham College had a seminar on Beckett's accomplishments.
Beckett was always a fanatic (Henry's mother, the Empress Matilda warned Henry against creating him Archbishop of Canterbury but he didn't listen) and a fanatic he died

The out-of-control temper came from his great-grandfather William the Conqueror on his mother's side. Yes, this raging was passed down from there to future Plantagenets, but it's out of context to credit it as a family characteristic until another generation had come to power. If your mother's grandfather had flaming red hair, and your father's name was Snerd, and you were born with red hair, would it be right to call your hair "That famous Snerd red hair"? Not until your descendants passed it along.

Great stuff. have been to many of the sites in Normandie like Chinon so fascinating to see them come to life.
I may not like Henry as a person.
But his atonement in Canterbury (walking barefoot through the muddy and dangerous crowded streets from the city gates to the shrine of his former BFF and then being whipped by 100 monks 5 times each with a birch rod after he commanded them to) is pretty darn badass.
Might he have done it for PR reasons? Probably. But the fact that he put himself through so much pain and humiliation with no guarantee it would work makes me wonder if he was being genuine in his remorse and wanted to prove to Beckett and God that he truly didn't mean for it to happen.

@Jennifer Blane You're thinking of Geoffrey the bastard son. He did join the church, I'm talking about Geoffrey, the fourth son who became Duke of Brittany
Geoffrey was actually 3rd son of 4: Young Henry, Richard, Geoffrey and John. Henry died young, Richard preferred war/Crusades, Geoffrey basically forgotten (except for his son, Arthur, killed by John) and lastly John who did become King (Magna Carta fame).
Why were only Richard and John considered for the throne if Geoffrey was older?

Norman French sounds quite different to Modern French and sounds like French with some Norse mixed in. The peasants also didn't speak Modern English, they spoke a later form of Anglo-Saxon or maybe early English. Anglo-Norman French and Anglo Saxon eventually became one language each influencing each other. This is why some argue that English is a Romantic language and not a Germanic language. The truth lies in between.

I don't think that the dynasty was known as the Plantagenets till Richard of York used the name toward the end of the dynasty. They were better known as the Angevins (i.e. from Anjou).

Henry II thought his wife's was his, but it's not. There wouldn't be the family tension if he gave lands to his sons.
The King did not do the dirty deed himself he got some of his cronies to do it.
The King later said that the four knights slaying Thomas Becket had just misunderstood him. Of course, the King had nothing to do with the deed.
I'm pretty certain Henry II had five sons. I must have missed any reference you made to Geoffrey II, Duke of Brittany.
Geoffrey's son, Arthur, should have been king, but Ole Uncle John "disappeared" him. What is it with dysfunctional uncles back then (thinking Richard III)!!

I absolutely loved this story. I've always been a huge fan of the Tudors so I thought I'd learn more of English history. Americans aren't taught any English history. If you can't interest them in there own history there's no way you can interest them in a thousand years of complicated but fascinating history.

Calling Henry's oldest son "The young king" is not accurate....heir apparent is more correct.
Actually I believe that's what he was called in his lifetime, and he was crowned as co-king with his father.

They spoke a version of old French that sounded like a blend of German and French. Nothing like modern French but I'm guessing the show's budget didn't include language coaching in archaic languages for the actors. Old English was still spoken by the peasants until the mid 12th century when it was gradually replaced with middle english (Chaucer)

I seem to recall there is a Plantagenet living in Australia claiming Queen Elizabeth the second is not legitimate. The reality is all the Kings and Queens were there through force of arms while claiming some kind of special arrangement with God.

They were Normans. The word is a contraction of north and man with the t and the h dropped. Those men from up north, Rollo, a viking from up north was granted land that they called Normandy. Plantagenet is based on a type of decorative ornament that the Angevins liked to wear.
