I'm on switch and I'm on new game 2 dont worry it shouldn't crash but I do have my switch connected to the tv so that might make it different but I don't think it will crash

i don't think you need to change to custom , once you start NG+ you should be able to use handy gnat. with the new update 1.4

Beat the wasp queen and mantis shmector broodmother finish the story and then you can enter new game plus after that you have the handy gnat
