- At the Race Club one of our most valued pieces of equipment in the swim training bag is the Finis Tempo Trainer. No matter what level or age of swimmer you are, whether you are a Triathlete, Masters, Age Group, Beginner or Professional swimmer, the Tempo Trainer enables the swimmer and coach to determine the optimal stroke rate for any given stroke and event. Gary Sr demonstrates how he uses the Tempo Trainer to prepare for swimming the 200, 100 and 50 freestyle. In this video, you will learn how Gary Sr and coach Troy use a swimming set and the Finis Tempo Trainer to determine the optimal stroke rate for each respective swimming event.
Check out our video subscription service to learn more swim drills and training sets using the Finis Tempo Trainer that will help you learn techniques to swim faster!

Thank you for including Masters!
Our pleasure..though he made me push myself hard!
We will have many more Masters videos coming in the future! Hope you will join lane 2 or lane 3 and check them all out.
Nifty tech, that. First time I encountered the Tempo Trainer was back in 2011.
Was too old school then, am still too old school now. So I just consciously count my strokes like when my coach made us do it when we were all much younger. Lol.
Thank you for sharing this. :)
You are welcome! Just count faster to swim faster!
I read you’re book you’re book Fundamental of fast swimming 😊I learned a lot thanks 😊
Glad you liked it!
really informative video thanks..
Our pleasure. Hope you will subscribe to Lanes 2-4. Lots more great videos!
coach gary, thank you
You are welcome!
@@theraceclub Gracias
Seriously cool 😎 thanks for the info
No problem, thanks for watching!
I was wondering if you could comment on race in ocean swim I'm trying to keep 66 to 70. But I find my speed drop in the pool when I do 100
Thank you love your video's
Thank you. Adjust your SR for the distance, but the closer you can get to 90 on your ocean swims, the faster you will go.
I love my tempo trainer. I never swim without it.
We wish all swimmers would do the same!
I want to purchase this via Amazon but the reviews are poor related to it's quality and not performance. Please tell me a trustful resource to purchase.
They do tend to break....but so far, there is no other competitve product I am aware of. So, we keep using this one.
I have had six of these devices in my time. They are a useful tool but they are not built for longevity and they are expensive for what they are. Comparatively with other electronic devices on the market such as wearable devices and other devices designed for the sporting market this is over priced. So if you buy one don't expect to get too far out of the warranty period before you encounter a problem. Faults I have encountered is water entry, out of the blue malfunction (locking up/freezing) and total loss of a mode. One thing I don't understand is the range in the prices vendors want for this product. Its disgraceful really and damages the appeal of the product.
Looking forward to an alternative appearing soon hopefully. :-)
It is interesting that you are using fins in this video. I understand the value when training for race pace swimming but I would not think that it would be beneficial to use in conjunction with the tempo trainer pro to determine your ideal arm turnover.
The fins don't influence the tempo very much. Age does, however!
I am 62 yo and a SR of 60 makes me feel very very tired! Am ok at 52 SR, does this rate make me less efficient, less propulsive and make hips & legs drop since I feel that happen too.
We usually want to shoot for the highest stroke rate that you can maintain - sometime (if not most of the time) swimming faster is hard! So I'd try to work on the higher tempos & do your best to maintain propulsion & body position - good luck!
anyone can comment that what are the tempo number for Sun Yang's 200, 400 and 1500? Also any suggestion for age 10 200Y numbers, 60 ? 70 or something else? thanks!
We think even 10-year-olds should be using the tempos we recommend. Sun Yang used a hip-driven freestyle, so his tempo was much slower than those using shoulder-driven freestyle.
@@theraceclub thanks coach. I am ordering this device for my 10 years old child. I must say that I got this info from your video and suddenly realized that I need one. A very vey details question that how to sync the bee bee sound with the stroke? Bee sound syncs with beginning of one stroke or the pull finishing of one stroke? or any one will be fine? Thank you!
Where we could buy it?

1500 freestyle tempo?
Depends on the freestyle technique you're using, but we recommend using a 60 stroke rate as a bare minimum. You will find a lot of elite swimmers using 70-90 stroke rates for longer distances.
Hello my name is Yuliana i'm from mexico my main stroke is butterfly how can i made to be best in the dolphin kik and in hip flexibility AN in freestyle how can i made to be best in my stroke and kik or moré fast
