Thank you! This is 'priceless' know how to avoid losing perfectly good filters due to mildew, etc.
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome... I don't even use a Sawyer filter. Still watched, 👍, and commented. Great advice on how to clean a filter.
Thank you very much. Well if you happen to get a filter you'll be all set.. thanks for watching.
@@JasonOutdoors... lol
I have many filters. I do own a Sawyer, I use a heavy MSR MiniWorks ex.
Nice video. Used this filter this past weekend and wanted to know how to store for the next trip.
Thanks Jason, I too clean my Sawyer filter that way, always wondered if I was doing it right. I also reprime my filter after long term storage, that way if it doesn't work I have time to fix it or purchase new one. Thanks again!
Glad to help👍
Nice tips! I’m sure so many people still struggling with the problem kind.
& .......1K !!!!!! Wooooooo. Congratulations 🍾
Yeah this should be helpful for some. Yeah 1K.. took a while but I'm here 🎉
This is perfect man!! I didn't know about the soaking part or the bleach. Im surprised I haven't died! 😀 Also 1K subs!!??? Well done Jason!!

Yes, he’s a good guy... but he still hasn’t paid me for saying that!
🤣
Great tips to cleaning the sawyer! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Willie. 😎
A normal water bottle thread on both sides would be much more convenient for cleaning and filling up other containers with water, and if the have to need a luer lock syringe for back flush, they could put a adapter in the package for that.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
Molly here. I know Tim commented on this video a while back, but since he's a loser and got his own channel (I kid, I kid..) I wanted to drop a comment. This season I am switching from my Katadyn to the Sawyer, so thank you for this info. I really appreciate it!
Ha ha.. I love this sibling banter. Thank you.. always happy to help 😊.
Congrats on your 1K. Happy new year
Thank you very much 😊. Happy new year to you as well 🎉
Nice review Jason.
Thank you 😊
Thanks you too
Definitely learned something today... Thanks for sharing.
Awesome 🤙. Thank you.
Excellent information! Great video! 👊
Appreciate that 🤜
Can vinegar be used for getting rid of the calcium and similar stuff to clean out and I don't think it can filter chlorine in the water and similar stuff 🤔
Yeah, white vinegar will take care of calcium deposits.
they say to run some of the bleach water through then close the cap for a while
Do you have to clean after every use
I don't. When I'm done I just leave it on the counter with the caps off so it can dry out for a few days. End of season I'll do this.
Never disinfected mine. Glad to start tho.
does it have expiration?
Does the filter expire? Not that I'm aware of. I know Sawyer has a recommend amount of gallons that the filter can do over it's lifetime.
Is there something you have to do before the first use? My filter is really slow and I have to squeeze the bottle quite a lot to force the water through. Not sure if that's normal. I have experience with a bigger sawyer filter and had no issues with water flow there.
@matejblaha4659 Most of the time, if the filter is new or been sitting a while, the fibers will need a chance to get saturated before they will work the best. What filter are you using? If it's the Sawyer mini that will have slow flow no matter what you do.
Thanks for your reply. I think it might be the sawyer mini that I am using now and sawyer micro is the one I had experience with from before. That would make sense, I don't remember the names and thought micro was the smallest one. I purchased the S3 foam filter for trekking in more civilised areas and it only came with the mini. It works well, but squeezing the water out is a nightmare. . .
The capful that Sawyer is talking about is THEIR cap on the filter, NOT the cap on the bleach bottle, which can differ greatly in size from the Sawyer filter cap. The understanding I have is to NEVER put more than a 2-percent solution of bleach through your filter because this will damage the fibers. The way I see it, this means no more than 20 milliliters of bleach in a liter of water. To be on the safe side, I'd use a lot less than that, if I used any at all. It seems to me if the filter is good and dry, you don't need bleach to prevent mold. Cheers and best wishes.
Hey there :) my sawyer mini has a strong moldy taste and even after backflushing its still there. You think using the bleach is going to solve this or do i have to toss it? Greetzz :)
Honestly if it was me I would probably just replace it. At this point it's probably too bad to clean.
@@JasonOutdoors Alright thx :) Think I'll get the squeeze or katadyn befree
Last week I took my mini and try it and was tasting mold, I read could be full of mold inside and I did a cut and openned it. To be honest was pure white, no mold at all.
I was cleaning my filter as recommended. After a few months of not using it I took it out to notice mold on one end of the filter fibers. Now I but one of the cheaper filters before the trek and trow it away at the end. Sad but true.
We have definitely been doing it wrong lol I'm definitely doing this!!!
Awesome. Glad this was helpful 😊
