Thanks DrMatt. Been trying to wet shave for yrs. Your videos taught me how to hone & sharpen properly. Everyone says there product is shave ready yet never are. VERY SATISFYING TO PLACE AN EDGE ON KNOWING YOU DID IT YOURSELF!!! 1st video I saw was with ILR stone. From there I was hooked on your videos. Very analytical explaining in detail rather than going through motions.
Hello DrMatt, I'm in. For anyone just starting out listen closely to the remarks starting at 8:00 and going up through the stropping process. Practice. Practice. Practice. Thanks for all the work that goes into your channel you're a real gentleman.
I' m in. Just goods say I've been watching the heck out of your channel and perusing others as well. No one holds a candle to your content, enthusiasm, and approach. I'm glad to see others catching on.
"I'm in" I was interested in straight shaving and stumbled onto the Doc's videos. I bought my first straight razor and put the money down on a thiers isaard. I bought the Norton stones and the ILR 15k finishing stone. Followed the instructions the doc prescribed even killed the edge. The Doc knows what he's doing and he is not out to bull shit anyone. He does this out of his own time and I am grateful for this channel. Im telling you from a first timer on brand new everything and killing the edge. Again without you Doc I wouldn't be straight shaving today.
I'm in. The ILR is a curious stone, my experience is that the way you surface it greatly affects the edge it yields. I tried lapping mine on 1400 grit aluminum oxide and it polishes like a 12k naniwa, just a super mirror like finish. The stone is harder than a coticule or jnat but not as hard as an ark, so you can burnish it to some degree and that helps make the edge finer.
I’m in!!! Great video, Doc. I can’t stand Internet trolls. I appreciate your videos and got my ILR, amongst other equipment, because of watching your videos. All of them work great!

@@mattmccarthy4180 I know right. Prior to the internet, at least in my experience, it was very difficult to learn much about straight razors. Those old barbers thought I was nuts.

@@drmatt357 Thanks again. Been seriously looking for finishing stones for a while. Will pick up a nice 8k at Lee Valley in the near future. Thank you again for the great videos.
"I'm in!" More importantly, though, is you saved me from making a mistake today. I had watched that other video, and the maker seemed so adamant with his negative review that I put my ILR up for sale today on eBay for nearly nothing. I should have known better. I had never used it, and I was about to let it go for one-third its value. This video came right on time. Thank you!
I’m in! I have been wet shaving for 2 years now and am anxious to start using a traditional straight razor. I’ve been using a Merkur 38c and a feather ss artist club Kamisori with good success. I have been enjoying you’re videos on how to take care of the straight razor instead of sending it off to someone as well.
Great video Doc, but how do you lap these ILRs. Mine just arrived today, and I tried to lap it with a 1200 grit diamond plate. It looked fine while it was wet, but when it dried out, I seem to have put some quite bad scratches on it. Not quite sure what to do now.
Rub it down with another stone of yours like an 8K. It should remove the scratches but even if it doesn’t, it won’t negatively affect the finished edge.
Wow I am so in, I just getting in to Wet shaving and would like to start out with a good razor as I do not yet have one.Thank you so much for the opportunity. This is the 1st UA-cam contest I have ever entered also.
Have a vintage razor, been watching your videos.... can't wait to get my "Old" razor ready for a real shave! Your helping me figure out what I need to do! Thanks.
Love the video, Dr. Matt. I’m in for the giveaway, for sure! I believe that I understand a bit of the issues with the ILR stone. I have taken the razors that you sharpened right for me, and touched the edges up on a Shapton 8K and an ILR stone. I know I don’t lap thenstones as often as I should (lack of a 400 stone unfortunately, and the sandpaper method gets a bit bulky), but I don’t know if it’s a lack of time on the 8K or what, I’ve never been able to get the razor to act “sticky” on the ILR. I have gotten them to where I was satisfied they would shave, just not to the “sticky” point yet.
Hello Doc Im new to straight razor shaving. I wanted to know if the first stone you are using is the Norton 8000 ? and the ILR stone is the standard? Also what is the name of the strop so I can purchase it. And do you lapp both stones before the honing begins? Thank you in advance.
Great video Dr Matt. I love my ILR that I've had for many years. I follow your tutorial on how you use it exactly. I don't want to be entered as this would be great for someone just getting started.
I bought an ILR because of your video, and love the stone! I have learned so much from your videos and really thank you for them. Good luck on the giveaway. Someone will be very happy with that new stone. Keep up the great videos Dr. Matt!!!

Hi Dr. Matt I'm in, I watched a lot of sharpening videos in UA-cam but I Learned to sharpen from your videos. The clear and simple way you explain how to sharpen a razor made sharpening a razor an easy task. Thank you
I’m in. Got into straight razor shaving after watching your videos. Incredible source of information. Would be great to shave with a razor with Dr.Matts edge.
Hey DR. Matt I'm in. you've sharpened my razors a few times now and its true, you are NO Buuuullshit. They come back like Ive never seen. You will be doing my razors till I can learn to do them myself LOL. Thank You from Marshall MI.
I love your vids man! I’m not in in this giveaway, I’ve won a soap from you not long ago. I have the standard ILR 6x2 and it’s awesome. I go 1200, 3k, 8k, 12k and then ILR. My razors take much longer to stick on the ILR than yours. I know I have some wobble in mine. Also wondering if an edge can be to sharp that it feels harsh when going ATG? I may try 8k to ILR next time and see how that goes. Then again it could be that I have to much slack or not enough tautness in my strop and I’m conceding the edge to much. Any thoughts?
I also go from a 12k to the ILR.I only go a few passes on the 12k.I do more passes on the ILR. Some razors it’s like 8 passes..But usually weapons 30.I like to take it to it really sticks with no presure(I’ve had no issues with chipping)Then after stropping I’ve been getting SHARP - COMFORTABLE edges.I do lap the ILR fairly smooth.YMMV
Im in!! Im 17 years old just starting out with straight razor sharpening and i feel like this would help me alot. Im from Sweden and i have learnt alot from your videos. Stay safe!!
I know this is an old video but I have to comment. Matt, I just recently got into razor sharpening / honing because of your videos as well as my love for the hobby and this provides the perfect opportunity to spend more time with my stones. So for that I want to say thank you. The reason I'm commenting on this video and not a more recent one is due to the person you are talking about in this video. It absolutely kills me when someone blames the tool vs their skills. "If that sharpening stone wasn't a piece of shit I would be doing better" or in the gaming community "lag is what killed me, if my computer was better or internet I'd be the best" no. 99% of the time it isn't the tool, it's the operator. The difference between a novice and a master is, the master will recognize when they make an error and they will remedy it. A novice tends to blame everything but their technique because they already know it all. The second you feel like you know everything is the second you stop learning. Keep on keeping on and I look forward to more videos!
Wow, what a terrific giveaway. I'm not interested in this one I think it should go to someone who really wants and needs it. I just wanted to say you're the reason I got into wet shaving these past couple years like I have, with the different soaps and everything. I watch all your videos and just wanted to say thank you for everything and all the great content!
Dr Matt. I have been a subscriber for a while and enjoy your style and videos. Please throw my name in the hat for the giveaway. What a score for the subscriber that wins it!!! Thanks and all the best to you and yours. Take care, Norm in Arizona

To dr matt . Thank you for your knowledge on the razors.i have brought so much on your recommendations. I would love a ilr stone but I cannot find any over hear. England I am from .any help would be really appreciated. Thank you paul
You have a talent, no questions about it. You can get a 8k to 10k ILR stone and get a phenomenal edge. Not everybody can. The ILR is some form of a slate. We are not told what it is. I can tell you I watch your Arkansa Black Stone video. I have an ILR, I followed your instructions and the razor was okay. I passed it through the Arkansa Surgical stone and now I got a great edge. You are phenomenal. You prep the razor with great stone, maybe that is the trick.
I even bought a transluscent and a hard. Those are to be used exclusively with razor blades. The whetstones are for knives. After using the black, 40 stropes, they all pass cutting the single hair trendvtest. Thanks for your videos, they are very educational.
Thank you DrMatt for the tips, I learned to sharpen my first razor thanks to you. I leave in Monterrey Mexico and is hard to get quality shaving gear/soaps etc. if its not for people who buy them in the States and then re sell in Mexico we would almost be completely limited to the ugly plastic razors.

Dr. Matt, how ILR compared to la lune? I bought norton stones up to 8k, now I have to choose between this two finishing stones. Thank you.
Congratulations on the channel success, Dr. Matt. It’s great to see good channels grow.
Wow I am so in, I just getting in to Wet shaving and would like to start out with a good razor as I do not yet have one.Thank you so much for the opportunity. This is the 1st UA-cam contest I have ever entered also.
Thanks for another awesome video. I'm excited about this giveaway!!
Have a vintage razor, been watching your videos.... can't wait to get my "Old" razor ready for a real shave! Your helping me figure out what I need to do! Thanks.
I'm in! I like this Imperia La Roccia stone, but I can't find it here in Italy..
Not all razors will stick so as long as it shaves, that's the important part.
I'm in. Thanx Dr Matt!
I'm in! Looks like some quality product, and I wanted that strop the first time! Nice video!
Hello Doc
Im new to straight razor shaving.
I’m in. Thank you for the opportunity, your videos have helped me greatly.
I bought an ILR because of your video, and love the stone! I have learned so much from your videos and really thank you for them. Good luck on the giveaway. Someone will be very happy with that new stone. Keep up the great videos Dr. Matt!!!
Thanks Carlos!
I’m in! Thank you for these videos, you’ve all but single handedly set my honing path with my eBay straight razor buying problem 😅😅😅
These stones would be a dream!
Hello dr Matt; I’m curious if you ever tried a Bess sharpness tester to measure your razor edges?
No. You have a link?
Hi Dr. Matt I'm in,
I watched a lot of sharpening videos in UA-cam but I Learned to sharpen from your videos.
I'm in. learned so much from your videos.
Hi Matt, I'm in. Fun video and I always learn, thanks.
Hey Dr Matt is it ok to hone one side until a burr forms?
I will do that if I’m all the way down on my 400 diamond plate and the blade is in rough condition... so yes!
Nice honing, nice stropping, nice channel, nice wet shaver👍
"I'm in".. u bet..
Congrats.. u bet again
Omg, I'm in! Amazing give away, thank you for the videos so helpful.
I suspect I may be overhoning when I use the ILR as a finisher. I’m using a coticule for primary bevel and refinement
Great video and what an awesome giveaway!,
Holy cow! Just wanting to start out in wet shaving getting that giveaway would be huge.
Great video doc, and amazing give-away ! What a way for ILR to show appreciation to your channel and community !
Would you ever use limestone to finish a blade?
I’ve never used it or heard of anyone else who has. Is it a thing with sharpening?
Dr Matt. I have been a subscriber for a while and enjoy your style and videos. Please throw my name in the hat for the giveaway. What a score for the subscriber that wins it!!! Thanks and all the best to you and yours.
Take care,
Norm in Arizona
This would really help me get started into straight razor shaving love your videos keep up the great work
Awesome giveaway from ILR. Thank you for the chance to enter.
I'm in, I can't remember how I came across your channel, but I'm avid knife sharpener (never done anything with a straight razor) and I just enjoy your content so much, because there's such simplistic beauty around it.
Thank you. Funny thing is that I originally got into razors from knives. Now I'm thinking about doing some knife stuff on the channel.
@@drmatt357 you wont see any complains from me!
Your videos are great.
Hey Dr. Matt, you have helped me immensely during the beginning of my journey. I'd like to be considered for this giveaway!!!
To dr matt .
Thank you for your knowledge on the razors.i have brought so much on your recommendations. I would love a ilr stone but I cannot find any over hear.
England I am from .any help would be really appreciated. Thank you paul
I’m in!!!! I’ve yet to find something that works for me but I’ve never given up hope!!!
Yes, the Arkansas stone will improve anything.
I even bought a transluscent and a hard. Those are to be used exclusively with razor blades. The whetstones are for knives. After using the black, 40 stropes, they all pass cutting the single hair trendvtest. Thanks for your videos, they are very educational.
Amazing video always learning more
Thank you DrMatt for the tips, I learned to sharpen my first razor thanks to you.
I leave in Monterrey Mexico and is hard to get quality shaving gear/soaps etc. if its not for people who buy them in the States and then re sell in Mexico we would almost be completely limited to the ugly plastic razors.
