After watching your UA-cam videos for a year now, your lessons have done nothing but improve my game. I went from driving the ball 215 to 250, I make consistent contact with all my clubs because of your “weight on the front foot” advice. Now that I am officially a subscribed member to your site I am going straight to your short game advice. The next evolution of my game is to hit more greens and improving my short game. Bring back the chops Tom! Bunkers are my nemesis. While there is no question I am making so many more GIRs as a direct result of being a Saguto Golf School enthusiast for only a couple of months, I want to not fear the bunkers, so I know your techniques will work for me as they have for all the other aspects of my golf game, thank you for an entertaining and super helpful video!
You won't need a "short game" either. Just drop those shots right where they need to be, on the green, make the birdy putt, and move on to the next hole. Elementary dear Watson! Excellent Tom!
Hi Tom, always love your videos, you make them simple & focus on keeping weight forward, we stay stable, rotate & don't sway. Crispy contact as you say, compression, love it. I have never had many problems with bunkers, but have often seen many friends & people have a lot of problems with them. I leave the face open, & don't have a problem with it. But there is a reason why, I play it different from the usual ball position. Where most people play forward, I play it just forward of middle. My weight is slightly forward, ball position is a little forward of middle, & my face is open, Shaft leaning slightly forward. But I never blade it. I want to share this with you. I never have to judge or imagine how much sand to take, as my club always hits or makes contact at the middle of my stance. Putting the ball a little further forward of my sand contact point gives a more cushioned shot with more roll out, bring it closer to the sand contact point produces a more high spin shot. Even though my face is wide open, my slight shaft lean & ball position being just forward of the middle of my stance, doesn't expose the leading edge very much, if at all. You can thump hard under it & feel relatively safe you won't send it too far because of the open face. you won't blade it as your contact point in the sand remains constant & shaft lean forward doesn't expose the leading edge to much. You still get a high soft shot out of the bunker. This approach I also apply to flop shots around greens. It is a way I found that gives good height, but doesn't expose the leading edge so much. Only wanted to share something that has helped me both with sand shots & flop shots. Would like to hear your thoughts on it?
My thoughts are quite simple, Craig. First of all, I commend you on developing a reliable technique that serves you very well, and I take no issue with your method. Secondly, anyone who is serious about the game and who has time to practice should commit themselves to building and owning a similarly effective greenside game. It does wonders for scoring and takes a load of pressure off the tee-to-green game, which consequently improves that as well. Unfortunately, most amateurs either don't have the time or the desire to hone this craft, so the method I teach here is a simplified one that will enable the weekend golfer to get out of the beach in one stroke, putting bogey or better nearly in the bank and taking a big number out of play. Keep up the great work, and thanks for sharing your technique!! TS

@A Dude Talking About Film - This is a very body-friendly motion as supported by the fact that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. Have you looked into the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. Thousands of folks across the globe and spanning all age ranges and talent levels are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. @@SagutoGolf I’m a bit of a freak! I typically have a terrible time sticking to a “swing” I am a high handicap because knowing a lot of crap 💩 doesn’t mean squat if I can’t groove it I tried stack and tilt on course yesterday as I started out with Eddie Merrins, then worked on a pivot playing a fade, then went closed and released hitting a draw at times I love your testimony I don’t know what I’ll do
From one "freak" to another, there's a reason I settled on this swing system. It was a transformative gamechanger for me. Here is the story of my "conversion": ua-cam.com/video/PM8lNNrMPEk/v-deo.html And here is an episode documenting my week at S&T Instructor Camp in Miami: ua-cam.com/video/m9qdPOzYUWU/v-deo.html Cheers! You have to adjust to fit the demands of the shot you are facing. If your standard bunker play does not produce the necessary trajectory to clear a lip, then it is likely that you'll have to open the face a bit to present more loft.
What if you have a high lipped bunker? There's a couple of courses by me that the bunkers with lips that go from 3 to 7 feet up, what would I do in those situations?
In those situations you'll need to open the face a bit and add some swing speed, Jeff. I strongly suggest finding a practice bunker where you can work on shots of varying lengths and trajectories. Tom
Interesting. My buddy does bunker shots like this but is very erratic. I’m old school and do the Ken Venturi method. Put the ball on a tee in the sand so the ball touches the sand. Then just clip the tee out from underneath the ball. Once you get a feel for the swing line up several balls in the sand some on tees and some not. I will try your method though. The bunkers where I play now don’t have much sand.
Sounds good. This technique is more for golfers who don't have much time to work on their bunker play and are looking for a simple, reliable way to get out and on the putting surface. It should also perform well in varying sand conditions as you are now experiencing. Thanks, Tom
I use too open club face and adjust my alinment no I set up aquare to the hole it's a lot harder for me becuase instead of playing a short 6foot bunker shot I'm playing 30foot bunker shots I'm still practicing square
Hi Dennis, Here's a lesson from the beach - literally - on getting out of the beach: ua-cam.com/video/y6lsY3Pd85I/v-deo.html It includes a section on wet sand, which has some similarities to extracting your ball from hard sand. Beyond that, my best suggestion is to spend some practice time on that hard sand and "figure it out". TS

After watching all the free videos I could find and playing pretty good 84. But always been high 90s. I still can not hit driver. So enrolled in saguto and watching all the videos in order
Tom, the 1st example...regular soft sand...sounded a little "clicky". Are you looking for the "thump" and just hit a little thin, or do you play em that thin?
I didn't hear the thin click you're referring to, Richard. It's fine beach sand, so it will sound different than a bunker. Perhaps I hit a shell?? 😎 Still going for the thump, and that's what I heard there! TS
If you want to get better at golf. Join the online school. Been playing for 20+ years and always struggled with my irons. After a month KFC crispy!!! Saving money on balls pays for the class. Thanks Tom!
I truly appreciate your kind words and the online school testimonial, @J King, and I'm very glad to learn of your crispiness!! 😂 You are correct - for the price of three Starbucks or a sleeve of Pro V's per month, folks from across the globe are enjoying dramatic improvement and the best golf of their lives (and not losing nearly as many Pro V's...)! Thanks again and keep up the great work!! Tom
I concur, I've been playing for many years with the traditional swing, it's takes some time to adjust and convert to his method, but it's worth to see the results. Any senior like myself who loves the game should check out his Online School, what have you got to lose? His short game videos on chipping and pitching really was a game changer for me. Personally I think this is where everyone should start because it really makes sense for the rest of the swings used. I am consistently hitting my wedges where I want up to 120+ yards to the greens with less effort, I'll be 71 years old this year and not many players that I play with are as consistent or make the solid contact that I have. Even off the tee when everything clicks it's a joy to watch the ball go like years past. For what it's worth the price he charges for his Online school could be a game changer for many who enjoy the sport. What's it worth to beat out your playing partners. Sorry Tom but I try to keep a secret, it'll cost them, lol.
Strongly considering it. From one single video my game changed dramatically. Broke 80 for the first time a few days ago. Not just better golf but more enjoyable and consistent.
@@kevintwomey2350 I was a 20+ handicap prior to Sagutogolf. Now, I'm sitting at 13 handicap. Tom will provide you with the tools you need to build the consistant body friendly KFC crispy golf swing. 👍⛳🏌️♂️ TO ADD: The Sagutogolf member forum is stocked with lots of information and golf chatter from us students. I find myself on this forum more than Facebook. We all have a common interest with different goals. It would be cool to even get a round in with other Saguto students. Very respectful individuals. No politics...no trolls...good wholesome golf chatter. Tom chimes in quite often answering questions and encouraging the Saguto Team.
Hi Howard, I'm glad you are enjoying my channel's content! For the standard greenside bunker shot I do set my hands back a bit from their usual more forward position. We don't want that forward shaft lean for this shot, and setting the hands back exposes the bounce while also allowing us to contact the sand behind the ball. Cheers! Tom
Yes Alan - the technique can certainly work, but your best bet would be to visit a practice bunker, plug a bunch of balls, and figure out the best and most consistent way for you to extricate them. In many cases with a plugged or fried egg lie we're just trying to get out in one shot; proximity to the hole is a secondary concern. Cheers, TS
I was also told by an 80 year old, a bit of advice after landing in the bunker. I was complaining about being in the bunker and he said," don't avoid the bunkers, if you don't use them they will take them out." Different strokes for different folks I guess.
Actually, Dave, that beach sand isn't as kind and gentle as one might think. Yes - we face variable bunker sand conditions here as well. Sometimes fluffy, sometimes like wet cement, sometime a think coat of loose stuff on top of hard pack, etc. The key is to practice and ingrain a general technique that works well for you, and then learn how to apply it to various lies and situations. Cheers! Tom
Try setting the hands back a bit more while the clubface remains forward, and keep the face pointing upward through the zone. You'll need some speed to take the slice of sand needed to pop the ball up and out. You must practice this type of shot to have confidence in it while on the course. TS
I am enjoying your instructional videos. Even those that go a little over the top (that's a cultural expression this time, not a golfing one). Saguto golfers never go into bunkers? They must be better than the pros then? But I get your point. The better one learns to strike the ball the less often he or she will miss the target and end up in a hazard. I'll probably try your simplified bunker tips. I can see them working. Still takes practice though, and confidence, because it's always a bit challenging in one's mind when you shift from "crispy" ball contact first to hitting sand first behind the ball.
I sincerely appreciate your kind words, Benno and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and (occasionally over the top) teaching style are resonating with you!! Yes - it certainly takes some practice initially, but beyond that this is a simple, reliable, low-maintenance bunker technique for those who do not have the time or inclination to master a variety of greenside sand shots. Thanks for your message! Tom PS: By the way, since my channel's content is connecting well with you, I think you will really like my FREE mini course - “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” - where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner. I was told that beach sand and bunker sand is not the same. Is that true. I think it has to do with the shape of the sand. I think beach sand is more geometric and locks together. ??? Anybody know if that’s true?
With the possible exception of a seaside links course with the beach in play, Don.....😎, the beach sand is a different texture than most bunkers. I actually find it to be more difficult than standard bunker sand, and as @James Davis says you can practice a variety of conditions depending on proximity to the water. Cheers! Tom
It's like "skull city" for the average amateur, unless of course they get nervous about it and decelerate, in which case they may as well set up an umbrella and beach chair because they won't be leaving anytime soon....😎
😂🤣okey TOM, this is a NEW way...its fun and I will try it maybe in my next life, because I'm a Saguto golfer, and my ball is never in the bunker! BUT in USA , and in Myrtle Beach, there are no DEEP bunker, 2 or 3, 4. 5 meter deep, you cannot see the flag. In europe espessialy in England, Scotland, (Look the british open, )the bunkers are so deep, you cannot see the daylight🤣So you need play the ball HIGH and strait like a rocket! The only way is...open up your clubface, open stance, swing strait and steep back, and pray...😂😄 or what your thinkin Tom Elvis Saguto! Nice sideburns😎
LOL!! You are correct that as a SagutoGolfer you should never be in a bunker, but perhaps this might help your non-SG friends who regularly find themselves in the beach..... 😆😆
of course, because I play so good golf know, thanks to you Tom, I thinking about a 1 year club member ship. But 2000 Dollar is a lot for 9 holes. But we have 27 holes so they change every day😩@@SagutoGolf
Well, Bill, there wasn't much of a green available at the filming venue for you to appreciate the stopping action of a nice, spinny, brand name ball, plus we never hit cheap range balls into the water hazard, and that's one large water hazard....😎
You are addressing the ball with the handle back from a normal address. If you don't communicate this to new golfers, you will lead them astray and cause a lot of frustration.
I did notice this when watching this video. Im always thinking of stack and tilt principles as my baseline swing. Sand is my nemesis! Im going to try this technique next time. Thanks Tom!
The only reason sand is hard for high handicappers is inconsistent impact with the ground. If they close the face and hit 2" behind the ball... chunk and you're still in the trap. Open the face a little the bounce prevents it from digging in. Bottom line PRACTICE whatever method you prefer, which is why most golfers stink.
Not sure that I would, David. This method is very adaptable to a variety of bunker styles. Of course, even the best players in the world are occasionally forced to hit sideways or backwards from a deep pot bunker.
So funny watching people change so much when they get in bunker at my local course 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I watch people dig their feet in and I'm like.... what are you doing lmfao! It's what people tell other people that messed this game up. Like a damn pyramid scheme I tell ya. "oh whats a great way to teach golf and make money?! Tell people a bunch of wonky stuff that sends them into a whole new labyrinth of hells"
I haven’t studied the rules in 20 years so excuse the ignorance. Is “drawing a line” not a penalty anymore? How about a fairway trap lesson, you know, for all those people who don’t always follow the Saguto wisdom?
Thank you, Mike. Thank you very much.... 😎 Actually, I've been telling folks that it's a simple equation: Mastery of Golf = Control of the Hips; Elvis = Master of the Hips; Sideburns = Elvis; Golf = Sideburns Cheers! Tom

Thanks Graydon! Yes indeed - visit the beach when you want to go to the ocean. Stay on the green stuff at the course!! 😎

Awesome! Would it be better to use a 50 degree club in harder sand? Instead of my 56 degrees?

Firm sand does not necessarily require less loft, but my best advice is to find a patch of some and figure what is going to work best for YOU!!

May try stack and tilt
The side bend concerns my 60 yr. Old body
Here's a link if you would like to know more about the school - saguto.golf - and here's a link to my free mini-course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” if you’re interested in checking it out: go.saguto.golf/
You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. I hope you'll give the school some thought.

@@SagutoGolf I’m a bit of a freak! I typically have a terrible time sticking to a “swing” I am a high handicap because knowing a lot of crap 💩 doesn’t mean squat if I can’t groove it

Love your vids Tom 🎉
Thanks Simon - I appreciate that!!
What about the shot with a high bunker lip in front. Can you do it a with a square Clubface as well?
You have to adjust to fit the demands of the shot you are facing. If your standard bunker play does not produce the necessary trajectory to clear a lip, then it is likely that you'll have to open the face a bit to present more loft.
Your chops always make me think of Bubba Ho-Tep. Get some big old gold rimmed sunglasses. When you got it, flaunt it. Thanks for the tip Tom.
LOL!! Thanks Jason!! 😎
Maybe that open face worked in ye olden days when the wedges didn’t have bounce. Maybe a ‘blade’ sand wedge would dig in otherwise.
Thanks,
Tom

Hi Dennis,
Here's a lesson from the beach - literally - on getting out of the beach: ua-cam.com/video/y6lsY3Pd85I/v-deo.html It includes a section on wet sand, which has some similarities to extracting your ball from hard sand. Beyond that, my best suggestion is to spend some practice time on that hard sand and "figure it out".

Hey Tom do u turn ur shoulders or is it just an arm swing? Thanks
If you're referring to bunker shots, Joe, then yes - the shoulders do turn.
Still going for the thump, and that's what I heard there!

Love your vids Tom. Looks like the club face was in front of your hands and your wrist bent, was that true or just camera angle?
Hi Howard,
I'm glad you are enjoying my channel's content!
For the standard greenside bunker shot I do set my hands back a bit from their usual more forward position. We don't want that forward shaft lean for this shot, and setting the hands back exposes the bounce while also allowing us to contact the sand behind the ball.
Cheers!
Tom
We’re moving to that area next spring, just retired!
Fantastic! I think you'll really enjoy it down here!!
@@SagutoGolf We live close to Charlotte, NC now. Coming in September to visit the area.
Whip cream love it thank you Tom
Glad you enjoyed it, Balt!!
Does this also work when the ball is plugged?
Yes Alan - the technique can certainly work, but your best bet would be to visit a practice bunker, plug a bunch of balls, and figure out the best and most consistent way for you to extricate them. In many cases with a plugged or fried egg lie we're just trying to get out in one shot; proximity to the hole is a secondary concern.
Cheers,
TS
But how far are you hitting it?
And will this work if it needs to get over the 2’ lip PLUS another 5’ elevation gain and the pin is short sided?
Sure it will....if you truly learn the technique and apply it to various scenarios as you practice.
Cheers!

Wolverine Tom is my favorite version.
I was also told by an 80 year old, a bit of advice after landing in the bunker. I was complaining about being in the bunker and he said," don't avoid the bunkers, if you don't use them they will take them out." Different strokes for different folks I guess.
Easy out of sand like that big Tom but at my course our bunkers are soooo inconsistent sand in some very little in others...😫
Cheers!

Great video, need one of those fried eggs (ball half way in the sand). Thanks
Just fry up some eggs in a practice bunker, Eric. That's the best way to figure it out!
What if its a deep bunker?

I was told that beach sand and bunker sand is not the same. Is that true. I think it has to do with the shape of the sand. I think beach sand is more geometric and locks together. ??? Anybody know if that’s true?
Its about the density. The beach sand is gold because the closer to the water, the more dense it becomes. Its a great way to practice..
With the possible exception of a seaside links course with the beach in play, Don.....😎, the beach sand is a different texture than most bunkers. I actually find it to be more difficult than standard bunker sand, and as @James Davis says you can practice a variety of conditions depending on proximity to the water.

Oh, good Lord - do those sideburns eat much?
Play the bounce
You are addressing the ball with the handle back from a normal address. If you don't communicate this to new golfers, you will lead them astray and cause a lot of frustration.
I appreciate your concern, but that lesson has been out for quite some time with no such issues or complaints.
I did notice this when watching this video. Im always thinking of stack and tilt principles as my baseline swing. Sand is my nemesis! Im going to try this technique next time. Thanks Tom!
Totally opposite of everything Ive been taught. Have to give it a try.
Yes - that is absolutely the bottom line: practice the method that works best for you and take ownership of it!
