Musical Segregation. They want to keep people in certain lanes. No one owns a genre of music. And if they did, the owner would be Black for Country music.

By the way last night I heard Beyoncé song on the country music radio stations. It was on a very very popular county music station that’s heard all over the state. I was so shocked. The DJ gave a good explanation as to why she thinks Beyoncé song should be played and why she was going to be the one to play it. Congratulations Beyoncé.

Going a lil bit old school here when Lionel Richie was going through his country phase and working with Kenny Rodgers on a few songs, but there are many other examples as well. The song "Stuck On You" comes immediately to mind but there were some others during that time as well. The "Urban" stations have no problem playing songs regardless of the artist but this condition is not reciprocated.

In 1974, the Pointer Sisters released an album called 'That's a Plenty'. The songs represented many genres, including country. There was a song called 'Fairytale'. A country song. They won a Grammy for this song, and I believe they wrote it. I think they were the first black women to perform at Grand Ole Opry.

All music is created by Black people, so Beyoncé isn’t crossing over into anything she’s going back to her roots. they steal things from us. Tell us we cannot participate in it and we keep sharing things with them so we deserve it. It’s the same thing with braids. It’s not just a hairstyle. It’s a culture and if we allow white women to wear it they’re going to steal it and say they created and we can’t wear it anymore as black. The whole entire history is like that and we’re still wondering.

Hmmm, i remember when Beyonce was on stage at the Country Music Awards, singing with the Dixie Chicks, when country singer Alan Jackson walked out of the show stating that "that ain't country", showing his a** towards the D Chicks and Beyonce..and you have current country singers "rapping" in their songs, remaking songs put out by Black artists(and getting awards for them), country stars who have passed over into the pop category and still remain on country charts like Taylor Swift, and people like Hootie of Hootie and the Blowfish, leaving the pop category and going country. There seems to be a blurring of the genres, where it seems like if you put a steel guitar in a song, that's automatically country.. Beyonce is from Houston Texas where she grew up listening to all kinds of music! And the instruments country musicians play are All. From. Africa.

Now, I wonder if Matthew and Tina Knowles knows his history and stories that circulate by word of mouth that the general public doesn't know? He was chided for straddling the pop line, but is cemented as " Country ". Destiny's Child hit in the 80's. I bet you a dollar to a donut that the Knowles had face to face with Rogers and knowing the history Kenny has with Dolly Parton, it's pretty damn natural for Beyonce to do country. He'll, it would be offensive to the late Kenny Rogers if she didn't.

Music is boundless. When it’s real, it’s good. I mean really, there is so much crossover! The basis of what we now call “country “ music has its harmony roots in Ireland and Scotland and its rhythm roots in Africa. Add in the banjo and it’s more dynamic. And you’re right Karen, music today is based in money. And, as you well know, there are powerful forces who want to keep people apart. Rooted in money, too.

However, Beyonce can't go from Pop to Country? The Dooble Brothers started out Country and Rock to R&B and Pop having Mixed Crowds, being on the show What's Happening back in the late 70's. Keep on keeping on, Professor Hunter. Using Professor Carr's framework of Africana Studies. I would postulate that "who are we to each other" is more important than "who are we to others in this case. The gentelman may not think that Beyonce is country enough for him, but we know that she is country enough.
For example, on the island of Saint Lucia, country music is ingrained in the culture just like the French Creole culture is. In Saint Lucia there are "county dances," which are music gatherings, that attract more patrons than say a reggae or calypso dance session. Charlie Pride is an Icon in Saint Lucia. I grew up in the south, and was called by the so-called town folk a country bumbbkin ehen i attended high school in the city of Castries because i came from " the countryside." We owned and run more than 25 acres of a banana farm. My brother fun sn annual Country-Jam, ie a country party. We have the banjo and the fiddle incorporated in our traditional folk songs. African Americans please get back to your roots. You who grew up planting crops and working on farms. You who ate gumbo and crayfish. You who fished in rivers and swamps. You who built and lived in log cabins. Now people are telling black people that country is not thier culture, oh please! Stop!!

Similarly to this, when Prince was recording his debut album, he told WB execs "don't make me black." He wanted his music to be heard by everyone, because he played all kinds of music. I am not a Beyonce stan by any stretch, but I've heard her enough to know that she can do many different styles of music and wants to do just that, but more than that--she is telling the recording industry "don't put me in a box." As for this caller, it's circular logic at its "finest." And he's stuck in a situation where the circles of subjective and objective thought are collapsed in his mind. He doesn't understand that he doesn't have to like it for it to be good.

It’s not about Beyonce being black necessarily as much as it is Type casting. If they was the case you wouldn’t have Tracy Chapman and Darius Rucker. I think it is not just the music itself but how it’s sung. To me if she says it’s country then that should be it. However, people who have type casted her don’t want to accept her label of the music as country. Similar to her saying call me by my pronouns.

@dopeskis9838 - Tracy Chapman‘s original song “Fast Car” was not played on Country music stations. It was only when the white Country music singer covered it that it was played on Country music stations. And even though the Luke Combs’ cover is an almost exact replica of the original, there are Country music “fans” who claim that his cover is Country, but that the original is not. Let that sink in.

It's been the same struggle with my Black Rock/Hard Rock/Punk/Metal heroes throughout history. Everybody from Lenny Kravitz to Living Colour to Fishbone to 24-7 Spyz to Pure Hell to Death to King's X to Terence Trent D'arby to Sound Barrier to Mother's Finest to TV On The Radio to Sevendust and the list goes on. They would always be told by the higher-ups that their music wasn't "black enough" or they should add more Rap and R&B to make it more marketable. Thankfully they were able to succeed despite those hindrances. But it speaks to a larger issue of putting Black artists being put into boxes and not being able to freely do what they want. One of the few to really gain mass acceptance by playing Rock and Roll or playing whatever he felt like playing was Prince (#RIP 💜 🕊). And even he had some challenges along the way. I'm glad there's since been movements like the Black Rock Coalition and AfroPunk (I guess...I don't even know about those guys anymore. 😒) that are changing the perception of what Black artists can do.
