Good tip I have Revolut UK free currency exchange business, it says 0 as in free but really 25 a month bad things is NO customer service,
If you have $2,000 dollars to live in CR you may be a moderate to rich people, two thousand dollars is quiet a lot of money to expend in a country like CR. I'm surprised that Rosarito Beach, or Cabo and La Paz Baja California is not in your list as one of the better place to retire if you don't want to be too far away from the US.

My plan is to move to Ecuador. I recently got up the courage to speak with my boss about making my position permanently remote. I was shocked when she agreed! I am heading to Ecuador on an exploratory trip next month! No need to retire to live better, just lower the cost of living and work less hours! That's my plan for now, anyways. I can't wait to get out and explore the world!

As I watch this video, I am in Salinas, Ecuador listening to the waves. Ecuador is a great country - inexpensive, lots of fresh food, and such biodiversity - from 13,000 feet in the Andes to the Pacific Coast in 3 hours. Quite the place to be.
I just got back from Ecuador. It was beautiful and there are things that are cheaper there compared to the US, but several things that will cost a pretty penny. Because they have to import so much, a lot of non fresh food is ridiculous (like a bag of dried cranberries $9 USD), electronics, some clothing, etc. Mexico is cheaper and Ecuador and Mexico are very similar. Of course, there are some things that are more expensive in Mexico than in the US (like electronics), but far less than Ecuador because Mexico doesn't depend on imports as much.

I grew up in Shanghai, China. Taiwan would be my ideal retirement destination. Taiwan offers uncensored internet, friendly people I want to hangout with, two things Shanghai doesn’t have. There’s no language barrier for me, food is familiar. There is, however, a huge risk, the constant threat of communist China invasion, which means you cannot plan to live there permanently.

China's about to make a move on Taiwan now. Scary times.
I believe all fears about China invading Taiwan are overblown. China has worked so hard to prosper over the past few decades that I can’t see them risking it all for an ideological victory. They don’t need Taiwan at all and the risks of invasion are clearly demonstrated by Russia’s failures in Ukraine.
It's more likely china will release a virus to remove the domestic population, so it should be fine after that.

Great video. Being a long term resident of Florida, glad Sarasota Florida made the list . Another mention I would suggest if you are looking for a not too big, not too small location is Ocala Florida. Big retirement communities here or buy a beautiful 2021 model house in a no HOA areas. Central location and away from the hurricane impact areas, low property taxes, low homeowners insurance.

You totally got me with the last one, lol! I was not expecting that one! Anyway, I strongly agree with your #1 pick. I feel too that the best destination for anyone to retire is whatever is in your heart. Some people may want to retire in Costa Rica, Bali, or Portugal where others may find joy in Colorado or even their hometown. Great video! It was neat getting to here the lists from different people with your reactions!

I’ve traveled to many places, lived abroad, done a ridiculous amount of research and I can’t agree more with your #1 choice. Too bad many others might disagree. Reminds me of the quote that I made up…”Go already. If you wait for all the stoplights to turn green, you’ll never start your journey.”

My college roommate was transferred to Dubai and he lived there for 10 years and loved it so much, he literally cried when he had to return and live back in the USA. I have never been but would like to visit. Excellent video with lots of good info. For retirement i'd look for a place that has top notch health care because that will become more important as time goes on since we all age and need more "tune-ups" as my dad calls them. Taiwan has superb medical care from what I read.

i'd say New Zealand, it's more expensive but the quality of life is amazing and it's beautiful with very low crime.
NZ is a friendly society, too. If I could retire there, or in Norway, I would.
NZ is awesome but not very retiree friendly. They make it difficult for 50+
You can't just retire there, need mega bucks

My van broke down in Mesquite so I was stuck there for a few days. I loved it! Can't explain it but it has a good "vibe" and I liked that. Not sure I'd pick a desert either but I have to say it was nice.

This is a masterpiece combining information-gathering and wisdom - you share first several suggestions from different perspectives, but you balance it with what one's heart is longing for (your best choice). Hi Kristin, I’m surprised you didn’t mention Italy on your list. If you like village living Italy is a great place to retire. Low cost of living, excellent quality of life, plus the food is great and the people are very friendly and very welcoming to foreigners and expats!

Hi Carla, absolutely right - is also incomprehensible to me why so some southern European countries such as Italy, Spain, Greece or Turkey are missing. Just Turkey, for example, has already very specialized in "long-term vacationers" who want to escape the winter in Europe. That would be worth a look in any case.
@Carla Habib, Italy is a fantastic country, but not an easy place to move to. Italians do not like immigrants in general, and it can be very difficult to assimilate. Also, it is nearly impossible to get citizenship, or even permanent residency unless you have Italian heritage. And yes, I am Italian. I do still count Italy as a top destination to visit (often!), but not very realistic in terms of an easy place to retire.

Now I live in Canary Islands , precisely in Fuerteventura, I reinvented my self since march 2020 as trader/investor. Tamara, you are so fortunate being an EU citizen. I am perpetually frustrated that I only have 90 days before having to leave. Those 90 days go by so fast and the awareness that I have to leave when my heart and spirit want to stay is wrenching!

Maybe your very best video, Kristin. This is a real question on the minds of real people. We have a different take on retirement living - we don't think in terms of A PLACE to retire. We think in terms of PLACES to retire, as in 2 or 3 or 4. Few places have great weather year round, but many have seasons of 2 to 5 months that are absolutely delightful. Why not take advantage of that rather than compromising half the year (or more) with barely tolerable weather. We live in the US Pacific Northwest in a county comprised of 175 islands. The boating is incredible, and even living aboard for weeks or months at a time is comfortable. It isn't a cheap place to live, but the weather is fantastic - 20" of rain/year to start with (virtually none in the summer), and it is in the USA. The shoulder seasons are quite comfortable here too. To take maximum advantage of the PacNW, we spend 2 to 3 months in mid-summer cruising in coastal British Columbia, Canada. But we also (in non-Covid times) live in New Zealand three months of the during their summers. I think it is a big mistake to mentally tie yourself to living in one place. Seasonal rentals are available everywhere, and they involve a lot less hassle than owning. The mobility is wonderful. Most countries allow a simple tourist visa entry for up to 90 days, some for as long as six months. If you are retired, take every advantage that life status offers. Be free.

I lived in New Zealand for @19 years and loved it. I left after retiring to come to Costa Rica. Here going on 6 years now and find it a paradise. Yes, it can cost bit more than some Central American countries but buy local brands. American brands will cost more. Our rent is only $250/mo food is less expensive too. We spend much less than $2000/mo. and have a car.

Hi Kristin! I am enjoying your very thorough analysis. I especially like your methodology in choosing a top retirement destination according to a variety of specific niche criteria.
Somehow, I find myself drawn to East-Central Europe - specifically, Lithuania. I have more close family in Europe than I do in North America. And I did not begin to meet my cousins and parents' siblings in Lithuania until the early 1990s, and we have become close. Proximity to family in Europe would allow us all to make up for lost time, and support each other as we grow older.
My husband and I love Lithuania, and all of my ancestors are all from there. What area are are you moving to?
Labas Eve! Although my family has deep roots in the Suvalkija / Sudava region (adjacent to NE Poland), many of my cousins have lived their lives in Vilnius or Kaunas. I especially like Vilnius as a retirement destination for a variety of reasons. In addition of having relatives and friends living here, capital city Vilnius has a thriving and colorful social / cultural scene, which also attracts many international visitors - including friends and acquaintances of Lithuanian heritage from North America.

Malaysia sadly has made it next to impossible to retire there. Thousands of expats have had to suddenly sell everything and leave. On top of that many are married and have children with Malay women. Literally overnight lost everything with no warning.
The same situation with many in Vietnam being suddenly forced to leave for no reason during Covid.
In Thailand, thousands of ex-pats retired many married to Thais with children have been locked out of Thailand for over a year because of Covid. Many like myself being forced to pay thousands of dollars for the most expensive hotels in Thailand for quarantine. Having to pay over ten times the amount for tests, mountains of documents, e-visa websites that often will not work, constantly changing rules, expensive Covid insurance for those already vaccinated while millions of ordinary Thais have no chance of getting vaccinated and are starving to death. While the ex-pats many are going broke having to pay expenses in two countries.
Just a nice warning from someone that has over twenty years of experience in Southeast Asia. Just because you are married and have children means nothing to these governments. They would not hesitate to force you to leave with no warnings. The quarantine hotels in Thailand are a complete scam. My advice is just to avoid this part of the world until all Covid restrictions are lifted with no extra fees.

@@TravelingwithKristin it has nothing to do with Covid-19 and everything to do with the great reset as they ( W.E.F. ) and the rest of the cabal likes to speak about it, look up a PDF document on the world bank website it’s approximately 240 pages and they mentioned in it very clearly the start date of this plandemic as 02nd April 2020 and end date as 31st March 2025. As yourself who is the world bank to decide the start and end date and more specifically how do they know when it will end 😂???
One place that I am also think about is Poland because my family is Polish. I have found out that they now have Citizenship by Descent. It seems to take more than a year and cost several thousand dollars.

I agree with your assessment of Bulgaria, eastern Europe. VERY underrated. I had some good opportunities to explore during a work assignment recently, it immediately struck me as a viable retirement option (I'm in the "pre-retirement" phase and my travels incorporate assessing their post-work life potential!). Thanks Kristen, always enjoy your work.
I share your opinion of eastern Europe, generally-speaking. Several wonderful countries with multiple benefits including low cost of living and a rich cultural experience. As you say, highly underrated.
The Balkans are worth a looksee. Lot of natural beauty and history.

I spent two months in Sofia and one month in Veliko Tarnovo. Both wonderful but I would never retire there. Sarajevo in Bosnia is just ideal.
Bulgaria/Romania could be ok if you're on tight budget. I would be worried about healthcare quality as qualified workers tend to move to richer EU countries and corruption.
I'm not ready to pull up stakes, but of places I've visited, my top choices for moving to live out retirement would be (in no specific order): Helsinki, Porto, Oslo, Trondheim, Auckland or some other part of New Zealand, Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, Budapest or Lake Balaton area of Hungary (some hesitation over politics however), Trieste, Glasgow.

Kristin, I've been enjoying your videos for a while. This one is geared more to my situation so I appreciated getting your perspective on retirement locations. We just returned from a vacation in Costa Rica and really liked the vibe there, but I don't have a lot to compare it to since we haven't traveled much. Based on the general list of recommended locations it's obviously a good idea to brush up on Spanish. We'll have to Panama, Mexico, and Spain soon too. I wish the Portuguese spoke Spanish, but it makes sense that they'd speak Portuguese. ;)
I've heard you & others speak highly of Eastern Europe and I'm looking forward to visiting there when we can.
Btw, we had terrible delays in FLL on Spirit yesterday. Not sure who to blame, but considering how Covid-19 is going in FL I'll blame the mis-info crowd. Next time I'll make sure to book nonstop flights if at all possible.

Thanks for the video. Potential effects of climate change, severe weather events and political instability should be assessed and emergency plans made in the event of an emergency. Renting would provide for greater flexibility, lower risks and make it easier to move in case your dream location turns out to be somewhere else.

Another hit Kristin! I have been working on this retirement gig for some time now. Somehow, it never occurred to me to retire in the US, but if I did, would not likely go for Florida and no way in hell would I go for Mesquite Nevada! Not because it is desert, because I love New Mexico *top choice in USA. Mesquite is a sprawling car-dependent hotter-than-hell little place heading north from Las Vegas toward Utah and even a free house wouldn't entice me. I had thought of many places, some I have been to like Uruguay or lived in like Mexico, but after lots of consideration and what I know of myself, am looking at moving to Spain The first time I went to Spain in the 90s, I felt at home, my soul was in its place, and it's a place I can afford to live. Within Spain, I have a lot of choices including Málaga, Valencia, Sevilla, Cádiz, Tarragona, Murcia, Granada, interior Catalunya, Girona, Aragón, Santander, León, Navarra or Mallorca. We're looking at cost, since rather than be digital nomads, we're going to be base camp nomads, having a base in Spain and Mexico and a truck in the USA to go camping and visiting friends and family. We'll still need to work part-time but will play time zone nomad in work. (We should collaborate on developing a Base Camp Nomad channel!] Another great thing for us moving to Spain is we both are fluent in Spanish. Other than Spain, I'd take a serious look at Uruguay, Portugal, Southern Italy, Northern Greece, Croatia, or Slovenia, but all but one would require a re-boot on language.

I've been to many of these places, and lived in a few. i liked your take on Bulgaria and that region. Intigues me. Portugal was nice, but of all the European countries, I really loved Slovenia!

Great video. Sitting around "doing nothing" at the height of the pandemic, I came to the conclusion that I can "do nothing" anywhere in the world!
So I came up with a 2 year plan to relocate / retire somewhere. After researching many different countries, I found that Spain was my first choice, followed by Portugal.

Still -- for someone who hasn't lived in 60 countries they are looking for your insight and recommendation that could be more than "whatever you like". Of course you have your own filter, as they will, on what to value, but they would like your highlights or top places depending on what's important.
Thanks Robert. I try to recommend a variety of destinations in each “best places” video, but there isn’t one country that will be the best for everyone. My goal in this video was for people to think about what they want first, then to choose a place that fits their expectations and not necessarily because it’s a popular retirement destination. That may be one of the places on this top 10 list, or it may be somewhere completely different. If somebody wants to retire in Ecuador or Sweden or Ukraine, for example, I want to encourage them to do that regardless of what others think :)

This summer I rode my bicycle from Thessaloniki to Barcelona. So parts of Greece, Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, France, Monaco, and Spain. One thing about some of Eastern Europe is the lack of a good train infrastructure. I really liked Girona. And Cannes but its expensive. Torino had a great vibe and not just a big tourist destination. Split was interesting. Elbasan Albania had a great vibe for the money. Tirana is too big. Korcë Albania was interesting too. You would have to have a car in Albania, and the roads are not friendly for cyclists, which is important to me. France and Italy are most friendly to cyclists.
What about a snowbird video? That’s what I’m thinking about doing. Summers at home in Montana where my kids are, and winters in a temperate climate south of the equator. So I’m looking at Chile, Argentina, or Uruguay. And the next few years traveling with my bike in Europe in the summer.

Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay are all good choices. Uruguay is the simplest and most financially stable. It also doesn't have four seasons as it is so far north. Chile is the most expensive. Argentina pulls at your heartstrings but the economic and political situation is for the strong-minded. I don't know about the bicycling there, but the Patagonia region of Argentina and Chile is extremely windy, tough on cyclists.
I lived in Costa Rica for 2 years, but the cost of living increased too much. For a retiree like me wanting stretch my money needed to moved out of this country. A cousin of mine (also retired) lives in Granada, Spain, went to visit, stayed for 4 weeks and we end up staying. What a great place to live!!!

Good video Kristin . Enjoy retirement thats gives you freedom to move around . Spend a few years trying out various destinations based on your main bucket list , then once done perhaps pick one to settle down permanently .

I agree on that. Retirement and relocation is a very personal journey. I do suggest doing your research on the places you prefer to live and ask help with a relocation expert to guide you on your choices.
Great video. One thing I noticed is that no one mentions the high taxes in Spain (48% of my US retirement, yikes). Portugal is much more reasonable.

Yes, Kristin. "Wherever the heck you want is the best place for you..." The best place for me is Guadalajara, Mexico. I have been here close to a year now. I had come here throughout my childhood as I have relatives here and I do speak Spanish, which makes all the difference in making the transition although cultural norms and nuances in the way people communicate and the way business is handled are certainly things that take some getting used to. Basically people here are very indirect in the way they communicate in general, and this can cause a lot of misunderstandings and frustration in trying to understand what someone is really trying to say to you. I can only imagine how much harder it would be if I didn't speak the language! I can't stress this enough to people who are looking to live an expat life -- make a strong effort to learn the local language because your experience will be so much richer and you will have fewer problems and causes of frustration and culture shock. Basically, you will be much happier about where you are living when you can communicate and learn about the people you are living amongst, what makes them tick, the nuances of the language and culture, etc. But I can say that overall I am happy with my decision to live here full time. I am 55, and have a good fixed income from the US (rental income) and I also earn money online, which makes my lifestyle here quite comfortable. I have bought a condo so I don't have rent to pay, just regular monthly expenses which are about $600 USD living a comfortable lifestyle, including having a car payment. And socially it is ideal for me as I have people to see -- family and friends -- every day to practice my Spanish if I so choose (which due to Covid is still limited in terms of large gatherings of friends). God has been good in allowing me this opportunity. Best of luck to all of you in your decision of where to live on this wonderful earth! We live just down here in Chapala. We enjoy it, aren't fluent in Spanish yet but we want to do more world travel when the world opens for that. Maybe next year.

general, although traffic can be a bear nowadays, and not a complete public transit system. Weather is springlike most of the year, but can be very hot in early summer. June through Sept is rainy season with sometimes very dramatic daily thunderstorms, which I have had to get used to coming from California.

I really enjoy your videos. I really enjoy seeing and hearing about your experiences abroad. As I approach retirement myself, however, I am coming to the conclusion that I’m going to stay home. Yes, the USA is expensive, but I’ve also been working all my life earning USA-level income. My retirement strategy has been geared toward funding retirement in the US, so that all fits. But the biggest factor for me is family. I’m just not going to bail out of the country where my children and grandchildren live. Now, if THEY all move to Spain or Bali or Mexico, then it’s a different story 😂. But I just don’t see that happening. I’m just planning to live in my place I’ve found on a small beach, on a lake, in the Midwest, close to services, close to healthcare. I won’t have to learn a new language. And I’ll use my extra cash and free time to travel to some of those beautiful places you feature in your videos. Keep up the good work.
