First time I heard this on the radio, I thought, "Wow, who the hell is ripping off Alice in Chains?! At least it's good". Then I found out it was. Bought the album the day it came out.
I was in drug & alcohol rehab when this came out! The day I drove myself to the rehab center was a 90° Seattle Day during August! I had my a.c. blowing and all my windows up & I was still sweating my a°° off! I saw a kid on crutches dragging both of his legs & feet working his way down the street I was driving on! I had never saw him before & I didn't know if he was paralyzed, goofing off, or what may have been happening with him! I didn't really know how to respectfully ask him where he was going and if he might like a ride! So I rolled down my window & said hay dude not to bother you or anything but I'm driving with my A.C. blasting & I'm sweating my fuggen a°° off so when I saw you just now something inside me told me to offer you a lift where ever it is you are going! He said I'd love a fuggen ride dude! He said I'm just going up to the bus stop where the road straightens out again! He hopped in & he was pretty burnt out from trying to get to the bus stop! I said hay man it's none of my business so feel free to tell me to STFU & mind my own business; but are your legs both broken or something? He said yep! There surely something! I chuckled & he said I'm actually paralyzed from the waist down & I do not have a wheel chair! I said holy 💩dude well I'm glad I offered you a ride! I then asked once you get off of the bus where are you going? He tells me he's going to band practice down in Georgetown. ( About a 20 minute drive from my neighborhood!) I said brother no offense but I must take you to your band practice location! I said brother I'm on my way to check in to drug & alcohol rehab and I've had a hella hard time getting there! I've been on my way for almost 3 months & my legs both work & I have a vehicle! After seeing you making your way down the street dragging your feet & now talking to you, I gotta say that seeing how determined & easy going you are is really inspiring me right now man! So to make a long story longer the dude made it to band practice & I made it to rehab! Right after I dropped him off at practice I could not stop thinking that I had to somehow get that fuggen dude a wheel chair! So after my 7th day at the rehab center I was able to make phone calls & the first call I made was to KISW 99.9 Seattle's Rock Station! A d.j. named Ricker whose shift was just after the morning show guys, I believe he went on thee air at 10 a.m. Until like 2 p.m. I thought he was my best option on who to approach & share my story to & ask if he could pull any strings to get this dude a chair! I told him I was at rehab & he asked how long I'd been there & he said that I need to fully focus on myself at the moment before I can start helping others! That made sense to me & he said if you do me a solid & fully focus on your rehab; when your rehab is completed I'll do my best to do you a solid! So I said deal! Then he says to me what I am able to do today if your interested is I am about to debut a new song off of Alice's upcoming album with their new singer Will DuVall! then he says it's never been heard by anyone in the world other than those that put in work on it & for them recording it! So if you'd like to announce it to the world for the first time it will ever be heard! I'm willing to pass you my baton if you interested! Man it was a NO BRAINER! So fast forward to 28 days in rehab & completing the treatment & I am discharged from the center & so the next day I call Ricker & he was a man of his word & on air he introduced me & gave his audience the back story on how him & I teamed up to help a man in need thru the power of communication! I believe 5 different people/medical groups called in & committed to providing the dude a chair! It was fuggen bad a°°!
I remember the day AIC released *"Black Gives Way To Blue"* and I listened to Check My Brain. I wondered when that unreleased Layne Staley track had been recorded until I learned that the singer was actually Will DuVall. I still listen to this day. R.I.P. LAYNE
@@JAVITHRASH1983 such a cool song! When i went to my first AIC concert, they played it and i was singing the lyrics with some random older guy, such a great vibe!
Jerry Cantrell , love everything you do to keep the peace , and great music flowing , you are the heart of Alice in Chains , don't let it die , thank you , tod.
Great song from such a great album. Us true AiC fans were so grateful and happy to have them back in 2009. William really rounds out the band very well, and, even though he doesn't sound like Layne, somehow he and Jerry manage to make their harmonies sound exactly like those golden harmonies Jerry had with Layne. AIC is one of the greatest bands in all of Rock history and I really need to FINALLY see them!! ❤
Even after the song/record being out for 13 years. It still gets recognized. I myself started listening to AiC early 2023, since i was introduced to Soundgarden back in 2022 because of an ex-friend of mine. 2022 was my year of Soundgarden. And 2023 to now (2024) has been straight AiC. Just wish i knew about these guys when i was a kid, even tho i wouldnt understand any of it since i woulda been like- 5, but i woulda grown up listening to amazing music. Absolutely love this band and i fucking wish more people listened to these guys now and their newer stuff instead of the new genres of music that are out there.
This is the song which made me become a fan of AIC. I was at the gym and suddenly Check My Brain started to play, and I was like "wow, such a heavy sound with amazing harmonies, this song is just perfect!". With all respect to Layne and his legacy, I love the old Alice work, but Black Gives Way to Blue is my favorite album from them.
Took a business trip a few years ago to San Jose then took a few days off to go mountain biking in Santa Cruz. This song was in my head the whole time.
comecei a ouvir os álbuns do AiC dps da morte do Layne. Fiquei meio receoso de q n gostaria pq sou apaixonado pelo Layne. Mas não me arrependi, AiC é bom msm sem ele
Haha that's what I thought when I first saw him, haven't listened since. Nothing beats jar of flies as far as Alice goes. I mean Mudvayne may be old and fat now but at least it's still them. The guitarist looks like an evil stay puffed marshmallow man. 😂
You're right, they should resurrect Layne's corpse and kick Duvall out. It's not like the rest of the members are still present or that Cantrell has done the majority of the heavy lifting for AiC even when Layne was alive or anything
@@punkmoose3962 even tracks like hallow Off TDPDH that's a facelift/dirt track just applied differently. Jerry gets alot of credit but he really was the soul of AIC (Also the reason I started playing guitar)
@@GiganticWeenI think that most people who are familiar with the discography, music, writing style, and history of the band would argue that Jerry was always the main person who was responsible for the discography and success of Alice In Chains. 🤟

This isn't just the best of AiC 2.0, it's among the best the band has ever done period. Layne would agree and he would love it. ✌️ ❤️ 🎸
