  • As the title implies, some times things just go wrong. I had thought that a spare tube and the right tools would have been enough. It wasn't. But the kindness and generosity of strangers and friends should never be underestimated.

    I know the feeling when your bike breaks down in the middle of nowhere and finally a good person comes along to help.

    One of the great things about independent travel is that you very quickly find out that there are plenty of kind and generous people in the world. In the 45 years I have been riding bikes I have been treated to some wonderful acts of kindness. As for Norm? What a star!

    Just discovered your channel and enjoying the content. As a Brit like me you will appreciate more than most the difference in riding experience between the UK and Canada. The sheer scale of the landscape and the fact that you can ride for hundreds of miles each day seeing very few other vehicles or people is incomprehensible. It must be bliss to be free from the traffic congestion, yet brings a genuine sense of adventure not without some risks. I look forward to reading your books.

      Thanks BTB. Yes - huge difference....although.... At the moment I have a stack of 1:50,000 OS maps in the bathroom Norfolk, Welsh Marches etc.) which I peruse in 'contemplative' times. I look at the myriads of tiny lesser roads and dream of riding them, then hitting the nearest pub. As a taster, you might enjoy this: advrider.com/f/threads/avoiding-canadas-winter-february-riding-in-the-uk-now-complete.1288030/ my most recent riding in the UK. It also forms a chapter in one of my books. Stay well, ride safely.

      @@nick949eldo Indeed, one of the beauties of riding (and walking) in the UK is that we enjoy probably the best maps in the world in the form of OS 50000 and 25000 which chart intimately the landscape so rich in geographical and historic detail. I live in south Manchester and have quick access to both Cheshire and the Peak District, in which despite numerous rides I always seem to find a lane I have never encountered before! I think in your channel I may have found a kindred spirit. P.S. at the moment you're not missing so much - all the pubs are shut in lockdown no. 3.

      @@roverchap I have a good friend in Stainland whom I met on Black Hill while hiking the Pennine way a few years ago. From what you've said, and at risk of sounding like an evangelical TV salesman, you might find my book 'Actually, I'm English' (www.amazon.co.uk/Actually-Im-English-rediscovering-motorbike/dp/1523332859 ) right up your alley. I'm always up for chatting about bikes and hiking through: mudcleats.......at...........gmail.com . We are in full lockdown too, not that there any pubs worth bothering with here.

    Great story Nick, a story of friendship that is heart warming. Love your way of travelling, too. When I think how we in Europe speak about our bikes, how we discuss endlessly tyres, and lean angle, and how the fork is too spongy and the rear shocks too firm, and not enough low end torque and poor throttle response and what not... and all for a 50 km spin around our homes, and I view your videos, I feel that you have captured the true spirit of motorcycling. This should be made compulsory viewing for every would-be motorcyclist. Cheers from France

    Hi Nick, nice ride and difficult situation, but for long trip always you need air pump, multiple tire Repair Kit, extra gas, battery booster,power bank , rain suit. Rain and punckture are most common problem.

    Hey Nick sorry to see that you had troubles but I am in the same camp as you for sure and I find that when things go wrong and you are not real happy about things that's when the total strangers make the whole trip! Kinda renews my faith in humanity during those times and lifts my spirits. Sure looks like you have been riding the Falcone a bunch this summer, hope the other stable mates are not too jealous...
    Tim

      +Tim Wood Thanks for the thoughts Tim. There are good people out there. We are trained by our politicians to be fearful of everything, whereas the reality is, most people are decent, kind and helpful. It is indeed good soul food.
      All the older bikes have been dormant since I got the Quota, but they'll be back in action when the shine wears off.

    After watching this for the second time, spruce sap popped into my mind. The Ojibwe used it to patch canoes. Have you heard of anyone using spruce sap to patch a tube?

      Just take your time, watch for fast trucks coming up from behind, and have a great time.

    Was it more then a puncture or did you lack the knowhow to change the tube?

    • @nick949eldo
      @nick949eldo  7 років тому

      Ruined two tubes and had no repair kit. There was a tiny metal staple protruding from the tyre carcass that I didn't find until I was back at home.
