I went to Ferrer's school in higham so rushden was exciting when I was kid but moved to Colchester in 85 but even here now half the shops are empty ... Anyway take care.

Can't believe how much of Rushden has changed in the last 20 odd years since I left. Higham bred but schooled at Rushden Boys. Bought toys at Osbournes as a child and housewares at Peter Crispss as an adult. Swimming pool and cinema now long gone. Married in Rushden Hall 1999 and that gave me the best 20 years of my life. Live in Shetland now but do miss the old place. I fear its too large and changed too much for me to like now, even though my family still live in the area.

THANK YOU PHILLIP FOR YOUR VIEW AND COMMENT, THE HIGH STREET HAS LOST A FEW SHOPS LIKE BARCLAYS BANK, ARGUS,W H SMITH,CHARITY SHOP HEART ,PLUS AN ESTATE AGENT. THE COVID AND RUSHDEN LAKES HAVE TAKEN THEIR TOLL ON THE HIGH STREET. HOPE YOU ARE HAPPY LIVING IN THE SHETLANDS?

@@philipfieldhouse9229 As soon as you said gun's I remembered shotguns and clothing hanging on the wall's. I moved away in 85 just as the shoe companies started to close I was clicker in one of the factory's only went back once in 90s but starting to miss Higham and rushden in my sentimental old age....Lol

Peter crisps was the best, need a 3/4 inch 8 screw, a complete new kitchen re fit or a double barrel shotgun? Pop down to crisps for literally anything

the offie and takeaway shops next to travis perkins i remember when in the 80s-90s they were weird oddity shops smelt damp was a very weird place to walk into, surprised them buildings are still erect ,i also remember that big cafe down the alleyway from the high street that had the aquarium tank always smelt of very strong coffee with thick leather padded chairs

Lived on Albion Place 1951-1963. Looks much different now. Seeing High Street makes me wonder how those green United Counties buses ever made through. That was when the street was a 2-way. Remember when the road was widened in front of St. Mary's. Old South End school with the bomb shelters behind. Took the train from Rushden Station to London when I was 5. Corner of Rectory Road and Newton Road was the United Counties Bus Garage. Shoe factories all over the place and a slipper factory at the bottom of Albion Place. Had a friend Garry who's family lived in the house on High Street South which was attached to that slipper factory. Lots of American kids back then. We would sometimes go up to Chelveston base, sneak through the fence (to miss the main gate with an A.P.) and go to the base movie or go to the rifle butts and gather .30 calibre cartridge cases to trade at school. I couldn't count how many miles I put on my bike and now I can't imagine how I ever rode it on the "wrong" side of the road. Learned how to shift gears on my Dad's Ford Poplar on the main runway at Podington. The Ritz every Saturday morning for a movie, a cartoon and Flash Gordon or Tarzan serial, all for a bob with a tanner for candy. Birch bus to Bedford to see Father Christmas.Got to see the town once more in '83 on the way home to Canada from Germany and saw a lot of change then but nothing like what I see in your video. At that time I dropped into the Conservative Club for a drink and ran into my old Headmaster Bert Catlin. Wound up buying him a drink even though he did manage to wear my backside out with his cane when I attended his "Academy". Nice to see Rushden still there but a shame it is isn't the employment hub it was way back when.
Good of you to take the time to record the video and post it. Thanks. Scott W.

We used to have Boots pharmacy here in western Canada. Don't know what happened to them. Our Marks and Spencer locations all closed too. A pity.

Linescrew1 Thank you for your comment,I believe Boots the Chemist is well known world wide.Marks and Spencer are still very big here in the UK. Pity that they have closed some of these well known British Shops in your neck of the woods.
