The chess history this man has seen as well as the all time great players he has known and interviewed is simply amazing! This was a wonderful interview.
This is why classical chess will always be king. You can't build a history like this on rapid, blitz and bullet. They are not even in the same league. Soon we will get back to the roots of appreciating classical chess instead of people trying to make it into a gimmicky arcade game.
Amazing interview!Dirk Jan is such a wise, erudite, and, cultured man.A true bibliophile!❤❤❤Wish we could have also seen his literature and art books collection.Excellent job,Sagar.
You should rename this: it is about much more than his book collection. He talks about his life, NIC etc BUT I find his sweeping generalisation (at 54:20), 'If u think chess is boring, it's yr fault it's nothing to do with chess. The same with all other beautiful things, there's never anything wrong with them' is mind-numbing. There is always room to criticise anything; he is arguing chess / music / art etc are perfect and cannot be improved.
Cochrane is the one who played regularly with Bannerjee Maheshchander who played some of the earliest Indian Defenses. There's also the Cochrane Gambit. He's a very important figure in the development of opening theory.
Good video. Dirk Jan has a treasure trove of chess books and experiences . What a passionate man. Request Chess base India to promote the origins of chess in India ( Chaturanga) and related books. Book : Kannauj, The Maukhari And Chaturanga: The origin of chess and its way from India to Persia" authored by Ranate . This book was written by German researchers. I am trying to get this books please helps me to find it. Thanks Sagar and team, great job as always . 👏
If the drawing of Van Gorp really dates from 1791, then it is definitely not Rousseau, who died in 1778, nor Diderot (who died in 1784); both didn't live to see the French Revolution. Anyhow, 1791 was, to put it mildly, not the quietest year in Parisian history, and is somewhat surprising that this drawing actually made amidst the turmoil of those days...
I don't understand the comment Kasparov wrote on the cover on MGP Fischer, was he saying that Fischer refusing to play him and analyzing Fischer's games he knew he could beat him or the was just sad because he would say wrong things about him?
Do you want to read Dirk Jan’s magazine: you can get three copies for only 24,99 euro

Were it not for chess books, I would have lost interest in chess a long time ago.
I used to call Rook as Hathi as a kid....that is how we called it in rajasthan
