How a tarantula builds a trapdoor lid on its burrow

  • This video shows the incredible task of building a trapdoor lid on a tarantulas burrow. The whole process took 13 hours to complete. One of the most significant moments to enjoy is when the tarantula uses its fangs as a pick tool to dig out some soil.
The editing was extremely challenging, most "still" scenes had to be trimmed out of the video to allow it to be shortened to 8 minutes.
    Enjoy.
The species in the video is Pterinochilus lugardi - www.tarantupedia.com/harpacti...

I wonder what is going through this spider's brain during this whole process. Like, here I am, a tarantula, and I live in the ground and build trap doors because that's what I do.

It's pretty interesting to see the spider judge the quality of the door it's making, going back and using more silk, feeling the weight of it, and making sure it has the coverage it needs to be completely concealed.
Really amazing to see such intelligent hunting techniques used in such an effective manner.

They look so cute, intriguing and intelligent when you watch one close-up, doing things like wrapping up an insect, repairing / spinning its web, walking around on a little adventure... but as soon as they get spooked they turn into a terrifying, lightning-fast, hellish ball of legs and hair that I just can't get over.
The oddest thing is I don't mind the fat-bum spiders, I can handle them easily, it's specifically just the bigger house spiders that get me... childhood trauma? :

You did an amazing job on this video 7 years ago - there isn't a better version of a time lapse trap door construction to be found on UA-cam! Bravo - utterly fascinating.
The intelligence, consciousness and determination behind this project is mind boggling. If you don't believe there's a power greater than all of us after watching this video, you never will!

Keep seeing these foot diameter mounds of moist fluffy soil at my New Mexico high desert retreat. On one of our walks, we passed a new mound with the 2 inch hole still exposed, and on the walk back *less than an hour later* the hole was covered, though you could still see the outline of it. I suspected they were Tarantula burrows, but never had the heart to poke around to see for sure. This video leaves no doubt, thank you! Apparently it doesn't take nearly 13 hours for Tarantulas to build their door if they have more user friendly soil. In one area about 30 ft diameter, I found over two dozen mounds.

+znovosad555 nah trapdoor aint instinc the spider learned it, its too elaborate to be instinc, i mean have you seen an animal made something like that ? crabs dont put lid on their burrows, they just have to burrow, thats instincs, but this spider is different, he know that he will be found if he didn't put a lid on his borrow but he also know that if he just fill it with his web it will be too unnatural so he filled it with sand above, ist that too elaborate to be instinc ? that spider is freakin intelligent
