The Hobie TI is a well designed boat and the Mirage Drive seems to be remarkable but in my view the drawbacks are the small "joystick" like hand steering, the heavy roto-molded PE hull (must be transported on a trailer), the poor tacking ability and the very wet ride of a sit-on-top kayak. A pedal drive would cause problems in storing the amas in the main hull which is a important feature. Therefore I am working on an option for a bowsprit+gennaker and maybe a drop-in rowing unit.
The Pedal Drive only requires about 10 inches of water to operate in. You can feather the fins and continue pumping short strokes and it goes just as well.
