The reason I find the Alpha Legion so bad-assed is that it doesn't matter whether their primarchs are alive or dead--every Alpha Legionnaire is a legion of one.
They're also fun to read, both pre heresy and as traitors. I liked the Harrowmaster audiobook that came out recently. I like that the primarch twins are smaller than the other primarchs, but the legioniares were bigger than the other marines, so they could pass for their primarch, and the primarchs could pass for men from the ranks.
