    I like Bernie. He seems somewhat self-deprecating and not certain about his position. Compare with creationists like Jason Lisle, someone who has published in peer-reviewed papers, but who has stated that if experiments contradict Biblical stories, you have to go with the Bible. Talking about a contradiction: an apparent scientist who acknowledges that science works up to the point it opposes a story which he prefers to believe. Boggling.

    • @swoleturd4271
      @swoleturd4271 5 років тому +8

      I actually liked the caller's thought process though. He didn't claim that he believed in a Christian God but a God/Deity. His hypothesis is not unlike the search for the why celestial objects act in the way they do. It wasn't known as to why until the celestial objects acted the way they do for many many years. It took lots of hypothesis and observations. He has an hypothesis that needs more scientific research.

    • @zugrath16
      @zugrath16 5 років тому +19

      @@swoleturd4271 It's not a hypothesis though, since it can't be tested. Like Don said, it's just a guess. But I agree with you, he was more openminded about changing his mind and seemed genuinely curious

    • @alexanderweddle3948
      @alexanderweddle3948 5 років тому +7

      @@swoleturd4271, his conjecture is very little like the development of an understanding of planetary motion, for example. I'm specifying "planets," because your assertion about understanding the behavior of "celestial objects" is too vague and a lot of the behavior, which required the development of new theories (also based on data: Michelson-Morley experiment, for example), was not well understood until after Einstein. Some of it is still not completely understood (e.g. re: dark matter, black holes, etc.). Like Bernie's speculation, early explanations for the motion of celestial objects were also speculative, not hypotheses. See Aristotle's shells, for example. A modern understanding of planetary motion began AFTER Tycho Brahe collected data, which mathematician Kepler used to give us a model of planetary orbits as ellipses. It wasn't until Einstein provided his General Theory that we were able to understand the precession of the perihelion of Mercury, and Einstein's theories were not derived from a simple "gedanken experiment" divorced from data. Instead, his thought experiments were based on facts that had been collected fairly recently by Michelson-Morley and others. It's easy to create a false equivalence between the way scientific theories and data generate hypotheses and the way an imaginative brain makes guesses without good data when one does not discuss the specifics of science history.

      Theory in science means "model".
      If the model doesn't work it doesn't become a theory in the first place.
      Gravity is an observed fact
      The Theory of gravity is a model that explains how it works and it's capable of making correct predictions.

      The older I get the more intolerant I get. The more knowledge I obtain the more intolerant I get. However I have learned to keep it to myself (most of the time) as it’s pretty shitty being known as an “angry atheist”. I feel like most people have the wrong stereotype about atheists and one is that they are “angry”. And I don’t want to give the pleasure of giving into the stereotype. But I understand where you are coming from :-)

      Indoctrination is a very very difficult thing to shake off. Indoctrination smothers the ability to place one's self outside of the circle of what one has been conditioned to. I usually equate indoctrination to mental "bleach". Most decent people don't do this to frustrate you. It is done because the bleach has done its damage.

      I think this is one of the things that pisses me off the most about theists. When a theist has a heart attack, who do they turn to first? Definitely not their god, as their reaching for the phone to dial 911. They get to the hospital and the Dr, because of science, research, studies, surgeons, etc, treat the heart attack patient and they end up having a full recovery. When they're recovered, who do they turn to? They thank god. If it was up to the church, all that science that allowed the theist to be treated and recover, wouldn't have been allowed. They will thank god before they thank the Dr and even sometimes they don't thank the Dr. This is the biggest thing that pisses me off about theists. Just ughhh...
