China Begged US For the Huawei Mate 60 Pro 5G Chips

  • Everyone is hyped that China's Huawei has a new 5g phone, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro. Why? Because it has a 7nm chip. The first 5g phone came out after the US sanctions and export control on China's access to semiconductor chips.
But the reality is quite disappointing. This phone is likely the rush result of a propaganda war rather than an absolute shocker of technology breakthrough. I explain why in this video.

To identify bias in a news media outlet, simply examine a sample of its historical videos. But the Chinese didnt take 30 years to become world leader in most of the high tech fields and industrial leader in major industries after being at the rock bottom. And West didnt see that coming. The 7-nanometer chip is enough to power very powerful military hardware, so it is impossible for the United States to 'allow' China to have such technology, especially since the United States itself does not have such technology, when they still need Taiwan to acquire the most advanced chip. Therefore, it is certain that China enterprises completed 7 nanometers by themselves.

China Insider is extremely biased. People don't really understand how monumental this move has been. INTC is stuck on 10nm and can't even produce 7nm. The US is completely reliant on TSMC. The fact that they're able to repurpose DUV to commercially produce 7nm is quite remarkable. And once the Europeans move closer to China, the US' supremacy is lost.

As you've told yourself, China used existing technology they have from Netherlands which is okay. But it's not so easy to run chip foundries as the returns are very slow since it requires billions of dollars of investment. China being able to tweak the existing tech to get 7nm chips itself is a testament that they have the sheer ability to innovate and by pass hurdles like sanctions and legislative restrain by US or any western countries. Now I am not a supporter of China politically and their humanitarian pitfalls are inexcusable. This particular topic does confuse me a little, can someone explain to me how the US aren’t the bad guys here. I can’t help but feel that part of this limitation is because they won’t know where to fit in, in a world where they’re not #1. Isn’t capitalism all about competition, holding onto the advanced chips is monopolistic for sure. It seems deeply hypocritical to criticise China when operating this level of control. Technological advancements should be accessible to all, that’s how we develop & build new technologies!
I’m based in the UK and I can imagine it was difficult for us to accept that the US were the new torchbearers for the biggest player in the world economy. I personally see a lot of parallels with the current transition we are witnessing.
Must be difficult for a country with such pride for being the biggest, the best, the #1. Don’t know if people are sure what being American means if they aren’t any of those!

China won't get EUV or equivalent for a number of years, but they have ramped up production of mature chips. US chip firms have laid off 150,000 workers. TSMC has idled one of its EUV machines because much of the China market was banned by the US. China used to import more than 300B in chips per year. That's been cut by >20% last year. Western chip companies in a few years will have lost 300B in revenue from China.

"China Begged US For the Huawei Mate 60 Pro 5G Chips" what a attention grabbing lame title. Like if China "begged" for 5G chips Uncle Joe will have pity and give it to them. Also, as the US mobile phone subscribers, we all know that the US right now doesn't have a real 5G network. The US only has 4.5G technology.

Despite various bans and embargos, China has had breakthroughs in space, ICBMs, nuclear technology, GPS, etc. It would have been the globalization and the global supply chain and distribution of work taking advantage of competitive advantages of all countries involved, benefiting the like of US technology companies like Intel, Qualcomm, Nvidia. The US sanctions and technology control has forced China to be self-sufficient and to bypass such chokepoints. Essentially, America's short-term wish to contain China is causing it to give up the vast China's telecom and smartphone market. The current technology war in 5G/chip may be just another war similar to the GPS where China will emerge as the clear winner (BeiDou) with its own technology outmatching those of the US.

There is a vision of China as a young, vigorous new player on the world scene that is being opposed by old and tired established interests such as the US that do not want to see a new equal or even superior culture arrive as a new superpower. This vision says that China ... under the wise guidance of Xi JinPing and the CCP has evaded ..." various bans and embargos, China has had breakthroughs" (above). Also, of course there are significant expansive territorial claims to go along with this. Unfortunately, this vision of China seems to include the feeling that the West ... especially the US .... is not a competitor, but an enemy. (Of course this is explain by blaming the US behavior in saying that China had no choice but to see the US in this way.) I assume that you see this vision of China as approximately correct ... right? @@tthooi

as an asml apps engineer, I can say this might be right, the existing DUV scanners have the capability of patterning 7nm using multi patterning technique and somehow Chinese found out the way to minimize the defect rate but this might be their limits now because Samsung Foundry and TSMC are moving over to EUV so ArFi DUV scanners won't compete in the market soon or later

The fundamental reason why the US sanctioned Huawei is precisely to protect Apple. It is difficult to accept the US made a deal with China so they can run Apple out of the Market in China and kill Android while at it. Just see who is visiting who this past 3 Months and you can take a clue who has the upper hand. Video guy is speculating too much.

This is just a milestone of Huawei. It is a 0 to 1 indication. When there is a breakthrough from 0 to 1, 2, 3, 4 will be coming soon. Think about GPS, Space Station Project etc. Those projects excluded China's participation, and what now? China has them all. More than that, unlike the international space station with multiple nations effort, China built their space station on their sole effort. Another implication that when the US and Russia relationship is frozen, how efficient the US can continue its space projects? Look further, eg a decade ahead. It is meaningless to have sight of few years from today.
