I had bought some molotow markers more than 5 years ago, and they still work fine. I also think that being able to refill those markers (you can also paint with the refills!) is a big advantage. And they have enlarged the color range.
I use these a lot and I’ve never seen the crackling you mention. I use only the 2mm. Patchiness can be an issue. Paper choice makes a huge difference. My fave for these is Hahnemuhle 200g fine grain watercolour in beige tone. The background colour complements the colour tones of the pens so well, and the paper doesn’t pill up. I wish the colour range was wider.
