Climate Change Washing Away Beaches In North Carolina’s Outer Banks

- Опубліковано 11 жов 2024
- The coastline of North Carolina’s Outer Banks is under threat and officials are trying to fortify the area by adding sand to the beaches. NBC News’ Anne Thompson visited the barrier islands to see how residents there are dealing with rising sea levels, which are fueled in part by climate change.

0:50 It shouldn't even be legal for politicians and the government to pass laws telling scientists what they can study and how they should report on their findings.
As they direct doctors what to say or study !!

I’m from the OBX … sand erosion/movement is normal on the OBX. Houses have been built too close to the ocean for decades.
Replanting the mangroves and other native plant life near the ocean is a far better solution to just shoring up sand piles. The roots slow and stop erosion and the plant life create breakers for incoming tides and storms.
Rising sea levels are here to stay. Planting mangroves or beach grasses is a fool’s errand.
How about replacing some coral we destroyed, or bivalve shoals while we're at it.
If only we could put all the online couch potato nay sayers who don't volunteer their time in a constructive way there. Might be a windbreaker at least, possibly grow mussel, sand bars with 'em. 🤣🤪🤔😯😁🤮🤓🙄🤭😂☺️👍
Mangroves, perhaps when global warming warms things up.
Here on the OBX we are a barrier island. No tropic mangrove trees. Winter can dip into freezing and below temperatures where they would die. So just piling up sand is the only solution

I learned in school many years ago that living close to beach waters is not smart. There has to be a buffer to protect life and property. A buffer of sand dunes and trees or whatever. We all pay a price for those who have to have the ocean view.

Natural waves moved the sand to create it.
Exactly...thank you.
The outer banks are basically giant sand bars. It’s perfectly natural for them to move around and they should have never been built on. Not a climate change denier or anything, but the outer banks is a case of people feeling entitled to live anywhere they want.
The cost of an ocean view home isn't just borne by the homeowner. It's costing all of us taxpayers.
John Stossel did a whole story on it and what a cost to the Government and Insurance Companies it is. The many Industries don't care as long as they stay afloat. Ha ha ha right?
A man said a long time ago a wise man builds his house on a rock and a fulish man builds his house on sand. I live in North Carolina and go to the outer banks often there is nothing happening here that hasn't been going on for years and years. These people saying Global warming is the cause is nuts. It's just a fact that the ocean changes everything around it and the people who build there take that chance that one day the ocean will win.
Wow a waste just for someone to have a house with ocean view how about not building there anymore
NC has know about this for years! They moved Hatters lighthouse a decade or two ago for this exact reason.
Sand bars (islands) are constantly changing. Naturally
@@90swerethebest10 Global warming is accelerating that change. The evidence and reasoning can be found in numerous UA-cam videos. The warming climate is causing increasing melting of glaciers in Antarctica and Greenland which causing the sea level to rise.
And because the atmosphere is warming because of the tens of thousands of tonnes of CO2 humans are adding to the atmosphere every year the oceans are also warming. And warming water expands so sea level is also rising for that reason.

If climate change is causing droughts...how can it be causing raising sea levels at the same time....plus...didnt we call this erosion before
As the Earth is a complex system, changes are often uneven. That's why scientists are encouraging the use of the term "climate change" instead of "global warming". For example take the Gulf Stream: It is a warm stream (as it starts near the equator), that causes warm water to flow into the bays of the British Isles and Norway, thats why even the northernmost ports are ice-free most of the time. If it slows down (due to a change in sea water temperature), it can result in changes in precipitation (in Europe) and also rising sea levels (Eastern U.S), due to less water being pulled away from the coast.
It is climate destabilization. Excess rains in some places, droughts in others, severe heatwaves while other regions are seeing near normal temperatures. Floods in places that have been experiencing severe drought because the earth there gets super dry and condensed and hence sheds water as opposed to absorbing it. The entire set of variables is incredibly complex.
Droughts occur due to various environmental factors including climate change. The ocean rising happens for a less complicated reason; ice melts on Greenland and the South Pole, thus water previously on land enters the ocean.
Not just North Carolina. Pretty much all coastal shorelines.
It's washing away beaches everywhere.
Most of it will be gone in next 10 years.

@@michaeljordan5972 I’m looking out my window in Southport right now. I can see the ocean. Last night was a full moon and this mornings tide crested the sea wall. "The state was in a very different place a decade ago". Yeah, the state of denial
You know you would think people who build a house literally on the edge of the water would do the the research on Rising water levels
People who build houses on the beach in the other banks couldn't care less about the sea rising. Hatteras Island is the #1 place in the world for being hit by hurricanes. They know they can be taken out in an instant so why worry about your house ONE DAY falling into the ocean. You sign up for that possibility as soon as you move there even if you're 500+ft from the ocean
Obama has 2 beachfront homes... very interesting 🤔
is it the sea level rising or it is the effect of currents and winds eroding the beach?
It is true that barrier islands are by nature transient in nature because the ocean is always imposing itself on the beach. But the rate of decline of these barrier islands is excelerating. There is ample evidence that the sea level is rising and from climate change as we also know. With sea level rise the storms that frequent the Outer Banks are even more destructive in their impact on the coast.
I fear that sea level rises are exponential in nature.... you probably want to move your house maybe 2 or 3 times the distance you planned on if you want to get a few more years of ocean view....
Remember when trump said 1 degree won’t effect the world 😂😂😂

@@MrHand-ih4sz you have some of the evidence in your face, there a list of island that will disapear before 2050, but i guess if it doesnt flood you and force you to leave it doesnt exist ? you might not know but climate change is not only a bit of sea rise, it's also crops that won't grow leading to lack of food for everyone and a lot of other consequences, but i guess it's easier to deny than act.

Look up the definition of a barrier island. The shift in patterns, it's just rentals are the biggest income for the area. It's a insurance scam you shouldn't be allowed to build on barrier islands .
Climate change is accruing worldwide and not just in the US. There are worldwide droughts in Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America being reported daily in the news as river water levels drop. The rise in climate temperatures are melting the ice caps and raising the sea levels as sources of fresh water diminishes as rivers and lakes dry up.
