Great advice David. I did restaurant magic for many years when I was first starting out. I will say this, it certainly helped refine my skills by being able to perform in front of real people every night that I performed. You are correct in saying people don't typically get rich doing restaurant magic, but the exposure I got enabled me to book many corporate gigs. I think I'll pick that book up, it sounds very interesting.

I think the points you and Mexie make are very important to this discussion. I failed to mention the benefits of doing a regular restaurant gig, and there are many. Thanks for contributing your thoughts.

Although I don't currently have a residency, I always advise magician I mentor that they try to get one. not for the income, but for the flight-time and the ability to try out and refine material quickly. A residency is also one of the best ways to other gigs too, and the other staff can be fantastic at advertising for you (I always offer them a finders fee for any gigs they send my way) so it's important to split tips with them to keep them on side.
