Rijeka (Italian and Hungarian Fiume, autochthonous Chakavian: Rekà or Rika, old German: Sankt Veit am Flaum, Slovenian: Reka), is the largest Croatian port, the third largest city in the Republic of Croatia and the administrative center of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hungarian government developed Rijeka into one of the largest European ports and a powerful industrial center due to its ideal geographical position and the depth of the sea in the Kvarner Gulf. The city had the highest population in the census of 1991, and in each subsequent census it had about twenty thousand fewer inhabitants, so in thirty years it fell from 165,904 to the current 108,622 inhabitants.
