They all have in common one Genius : Papy Groove, Manu Dibango famously known worldwide for his masterpiece 'Soul Makossa' released in 1972.
The record reached #35 on the Billboard Hot100 and #21 on Hot R&B Songs, and was sampled in 1982 by the King of Pop Michael Jackson for his track 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' .
Soul Makossa which was originally recorded to be Cameroon's national soccer team anthem for the 1972 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) ended up to be Manu Dibango's biggest hit.
With its timeless groovy sound and worldwide appeal, the record got covered by 23 groups and sampled by 76 artists such as Will Smith who even sent a handwritten letter asking for permission in order to sample it for his single 'Jiggy Wit It'.
Jay-Z sampled it for his track 'Face Off' from his album In My Life Time, Vol. 1
P. Diddy sampled it for Jennifer Lopez track 'Feelin' So Good' ft Big Pun & Fat Joe
Kanye West and Rihanna sampled it for their respective track 'Lost in The World' and 'Don't Stop The Music'
And the list goes on...
Scoopy Benz bigged him up on his record 'Balmain'
French Rappers 4Keus and Niska gave him a shoutout in their song 'MD' which stands for Manu Dibango
The musician and songwriter Manu Dibango aka Papy Groove who developed a musical style fusing Jazz, Funk and traditional Cameroonian music sadly died of COVID-19 on March 24 2020 (aged 86) in Paris.
We had to share the light on his work, impact and influence before announcing his death because we love to give credit where it's due unlike people who made millions off his record.
