Great explanation. Or, you could buy an external hard drive, back your photos up to that, avoid yet a mother monthly subscription payment and be responsible and in control of your own photos. But it was a very good explanation of how your photos are stored.

Thank you for clarifying what I suspected. It is mind boggling to me that Apple does not offer the option of removing from device but not Icloud but you are awesome for taking the time to explain clearly!
To explain the optimisation, I have 7030 photos and 274 videos and when using the “optimised storage” setting (thumb nail) I’m using approximately 9GB of storage on my device, but using approximately 52GB of iCloud storage. When I switch to “download and keep originals” setting I’m using 57GB of storage on my device and still 52GB of iCloud storage. Be aware it is your videos that take up most of the storage space. To free up space by deleting unwanted photos you will not free up space for 30 days unless you further delete the deleted photos by going in to the recently deleted album and deleting the photos again.
No, you can't replicate Google's behavior - that's not how iCloud Photo Library works. You either sync everything or you sync nothing. You cannot partially sync or download.
True. I still don’t understand. I’m just going to save my photos on a flash drive. Apple just wants to stay in my pockets by charging me monthly for space that doesn’t accumulate if I’m paying every month.
Excellent Video thankyou so much! I ended up deleting almost 40GB of data without even touching my photos. I always thought photos were the issue but thanks to you i now know they are not! Thanks again

Ah now i understand what optimized mean on ios, no more worry about storage on my phone even my phone still have lots of space, thanks for the explanation, best!
So, photos that still taking up iPhone's storage even though my iCloud photos library is on is the photos from another applications like whatsapp and twitter? Is there anyway to made these kind of photos to only go to the cloud and not taking up my iPhone storages?
"photos that still taking up iPhone's storage even though my iCloud photos library is on" - No, not necessarily as I've explained in the video. "Is there anyway to made these kind of photos to only go to the cloud and not taking up my iPhone storages" No, there is not.
What if i selected the “Optimize photos” feature but the photos are still in my iPhone storage. Icloud shows that they’re in the cloud but they are still locally on my device. I recently switched from Android to IOS and used the Move To IOS app. Not sure if that helps.
Hi Luis, iOS will ultimately remove them from your iPhone to make space for new photos. If you access older photos from your iPhone, iOS will download and temporarily store them locally again. All of that happens automatically and there is nothing you'll have to do.
Thank you so much for this extremely informative video. I had a few questions I was hoping you could help me with. My iCloud library has more photos than my iPhone library. 1. When I delete stuff from my phone, even though my iCloud photos backup is enabled, why doesn’t it delete those files from iCloud? 2. Alternatively, if I delete from iCloud, will it also delete from my phone? 3. Basically I want my iCloud and phone library to be the same (and changes in my phone device library to reflect in iCloud as well). How do I do this? Thank you in advance :) hope you’re safe and well
Hi Pooja, when you say "my iCloud Photos Backup is enabled," what do you mean? There is no such thing as a photo backup in iCloud. There is iCloud Photo Library and assuming it's turned on, it should keep everything in sync, including deletions. If you just recently turned on iCloud Photo Library, it might still be synchronizing. If so, the Photos.app on your iPhone will tell you that. 2) Yes 3) All you need to do is turn iCloud Photo Library on and wait for your photos to sync. Depending on the size of your library and your internet connection, that might take a while. Cheers, Michael
You mentioned that if a photo is deleted from iPhone it also gets deleted from iCloud backup so what is the point of backup then? Even if we have plenty of storage on iCloud, the phone will eventually run out of storage if we can’t delete the photos from iPhone? I’m confused.
The main point of my video was to explain that you do NOT need to delete photos or videos from your iPhone as iCloud will take care of storage management :)
I have 2TB iCloud storage but even with optimising pictures the storage in my iPhone is full ( photos) … how do I use the iCloud space and free up storage on my phone !
@michael kummer if I have enough iCloud storage but I want to upload the original (instead of “optimizing”) will it still free up space on my phone to use iCloud storage? THANK YOU IN ADVANCE! Very great explanation!
Hey Naimah! The Optimize vs. Originals only determines how images are stored on your iPhone/Mac (full resolution vs. optimized). But regardless of that setting, iCloud will always store the full resolution images. Makes sense?
@@MichaelKummer absolutely! Thank you. I purchased 2tb of space but because I have over 30k photos on my phone they aren’t all updating. Lesson learned. Purchase storage, toggle synch and then click away!
My ipad is full. I have bought the 2TB. I want my ipad to be free and my videos and photos uploaded on the Cloud so my ipad can be free. What do you recommend.
Hi! How do I delete photos without deleting them on iCloud? The only way I know is by disabling iCloud. But what happens if I enabled iCloud again after I have emptied my photos. Will the photos on iCloud stay or deleted- mirroring my now empty photo gallery? Thanks!
You can't delete photos or videos from your device if you have iCloud Photos enabled. You're not supposed to do that as I explained in my video. To answer your question - if you disable iCloud Photos, then delete photos and turn iCloud Photos back on, your deleted photos will either come back or get deleted from iCloud too.
good article on apple storage. Do you have a solution to the problem that my iphone also backs up to my google photo app on my iphone and if i try and delete from my google photo app on my iphone any photos then it also deletes it from my iphone photo album.
This is a great video. I have a question if you could help me out. So I turned off my iCloud Photo Library thinking that removing my photos from my phone would help my storage problem. But it turns out the storage is still there but the videos and pics are off my phone. They are on my iCloud account when I log in on iCloud on my computers or safari but they’re not in my phone. So I turned back on my iCloud photo, figuring that I just get the pictures and videos back and patiently wait for them to be downloaded to google photos and then I can disable iCloud once and for all. My problem is that I don’t know how to get my iCloud photos back on my iphone and I’m afraid that if I hook my phone to my computer and it gives me an option to download the pictures, it will just take up more space. Now it’s in a mode of uploading whatever that wasn’t removed to iCloud. When I restart my phone it tells me “Updating paused for 14,211 items” and then it goes back to uploading the items that were not removed. I don’t know if I have to be patient for them to be update to be resumed so the photos can go back to my phone or if after this upload, then they are going to resume the update and be uploaded back on my phone. Can you help me out with this problem if possible? Please and thank you!
You just have to be patient and wait for the library to sync. I know it says “uploading” but it’s actually synchronizing! Just give it a few days, depending on your internet connection.
I don’t see how your photos could be on iCloud and not on your phone. Unless, of course, if you disabled iCloud Photo Library, deleted photos from your phone and now you want the deleted photos back. But I doubt that’s what’s going on here.
Hi i have a question. My photos are taking up my icloud storage and not my actual phone storage. I have so much free storage on my phone but for some reason all my photos are on my icloud storage and now my phone isnt backing up. How do i remove them from the icloud storage and onto my actual phone storage? It will be great help, thanks!
Yes it’s very confusing and annoying, so I use google photos. I don’t let it sync, and I delete from phone thru google photos. They then remain on google photos, but gone from phone/device, can download easily if needed on any of your devices, pc, Mac, whatever.
One of the most important aspects of this type of set up his time machine. You didn’t mention anything about Time Machine. Time Machine is a critical element of this because if it’s always plugged in then even if you delete a photo at some point assuming Time Machine has run in the interim then there’s a copy there.
I’m all for a reliable backup strategy but I’ve stopped using Time Machine a few years ago and lieu of an off-site solution from Backblaze. Time Machine is great but lacks performance for large photo libraries. I sync my full library every day via Chronosync and have found that to be more efficient.
Hi , Thank you so much for great explanation. I have a question. I have just upgraded to 50 GB iCloud storage plan. I have uploaded all the 5k photos from iphone to iCloud. I’ve just bought 200 gb of iCloud space. So my photos have synced from my iPhone to my iPad. How come since my photos have gone onto my iPad my gb left on my iPad have decreased. I thought it was in the cloud or something or other?
Your iPad downloads and removes photos and videos on demand. So it might have downloaded some items you have recently viewed. Don’t worry though, it’ll clean up after itself as you need the space for other data.
Hey dude , i need to remove data from iCloud drive , my i cloud drive is full as appear in you this video thumnail , but i can not find the way the delete it , it is taking damn big space , and i need to remove it , even i my phone storage is only 30gb used but the icloud drive is taking 70 gb space , need help how do i remove it ?
Hi, let’s say I pay for 200GB iCloud and have 15000 photos and videos, synced all across my iPhone, Mac, iPad. (Just an example) But let’s say iCloud got full, and I don’t want to pay for 2TB. Instead, I want to remove most of these files from iCloud using the Photos app on the Mac. As you explained, I can export those files to an external drive, and then I can remove them from iCloud. Is that a correct understanding? But my question is: I DO want to use the Photos app on Mac to view and organise those files that were removed from iCloud, simple because the Photos app is a great way to see albums, see where the pictures were taken, it also recognises faces etc. Basically, I would like to understand if I can manage both iCloud and external hard drive photos and videos with the same Photos app, but the external hard drive pictures should NOT be synced back to icloud. Is it possible? What are the drawbacks etc.? Can you please write a slightly detailed explanation as to what and how can I do with the Photos app regarding this scenario? And a 2nd question if you don’t mind: can I pay for 200GB but share this with my wife? Thank you! Ps.: icloud is the worst explained product from Apple. i still have something called Photo Stream on some of my devices, I don’t even understand how that fits into this picture, and also add “camera roll” on top, just as icing on the cake. with my wife we are just lost, so much so that we started using a 3rd party cloud service (pcloud) to upload all our photos to a shared folder, and then we manually organise from there. You are just looking at this icloud confusion and don’t know what workflow is safe and efficient. And I think many people have the same experience. Why on earth Apple didn’t put eg. a help video explaining all these this, straight into the app.
Hi Steven, you can create and manage two separate libraries with the Photos app - one can be synched and the other one would be local to your Mac. To create a second library, hold down the OPTION key and click on the Photos.app icon to launch it. Once you have two libraries, you can export items from the system library (the one that's synched), delete them from there and then import them into the newly created library. Unfortunately, switching back and forth between the libraries requires a restart of the Photos.app using the method (OPTION key) I mentioned above. With Family Sharing, you can share iCloud Storage with family members. PS: Photostream is legacy technology that I've disabled on all of my devices because it's been replaced with iCloud Photos. Cheers, Michael
@@MichaelKummer thank you, that’s very valuable! I had a think, and I came to the conclusion that no matter what, iCloud WILL get full at some point, it’s an unavoidable fact, unless you regularly get images out from iCloud. It’s not the question of IF but WHEN. If not in the next 1-2 years, then in 3-5 years. Therefore, my thinking is that I should only pay for the cheapest 50GB, and use iCloud as a temporary system, and have the discipline to get images out let’s say quarterly. 50GB should be enough for 3 months, organising photos every 3 months is doable (and quite frankly it’s useful) and the money I save by not paying $9.99 / month can be spent on a 1 or even 2 massive backup drives. Anyway.. Have a great 2022
I’m not sure if this was mentioned in the video but my greatest problem is the amount of GB my phone use for photos even though I have 2TB icloud. It seems that the GB in my ipad is much lower than my phone. Please help me solve this problem. Have to delete apps in order to store photos and sync them on icloud
Thank you so much for this videos it almost explain everything but I hav a question as you said after optmizing full resolution photos will be downloaded on demand when we open it what if wifi or mobile data is off at that time will it show only lower resolution or thumbnail 2) My iphone has 64 gb pur of which only 30 gb is filled and than alao I hav choose. to optimize my photos and saves 2gb of storage on it now when I go to photos I dont feel they are of low resolution even videos dont load they open directly so is lower resolution happens why when iphone is low pn storage ??? Also I dont find any size difference in photos app like if a photo is pf lower resolution as you said after optimizing than it should be of lesser size . Please answer my questions
Hi Mohit! 1) When you're offline (no WiFi or Cellular connection), the phone won't be able to show full-res images and you'll only see thumbnails. 2) Correct. Your phone will keep full-res images until you run low on storage. At that point, local full-res images will be replaced on-demand by low-res thumbnails.

so, the cloud is really not a backup but sort of a fail safe? If i did not use the cloud I could delete from my phone but still have all my photos on my computer and thus the backup hard drive? the benefit to icloud is simply the sharing of my photos with all my devices? This is the first time i have understood this. Thanks for your vid. as I thought i could delete from my phone and still keep a copy on the cloud. I'd have been in trouble except for my time machine, lol. I may look into Google. Thanks man .
Correct, it's not a backup per se but a fail-safe. If you disable iCloud Photo Library, you won't get all the photos synced to your computer, unless you do that manually.
Hello, thank you for the explanation. I need to upload photos from my laptop to iPhone 11 pro max. Im using iphone 5, 16gb. My problem is each app is eating memory on my phone in my 16gb. How to clear data or clear cache each app without reinstalling the app. My phone is gpp. RESET ADVICE is not advisable if your gonna mention that. Pls help
I'm not sure what to tell you other than deleting some of the apps you have or upgrading to a phone with more storage. I don't know that there is anything in between that might help you. Removing app-specific caches is certainly not something you can easily do in general, unless the app has such a feature.
Thanks for your explanation! This makes me think of this scenario: Lets say hypothetically our iphone has 64gb physical storage and we have 100gb icloud storage. And we only sync photos between the iphone and icloud. Say we have 64gb of photos (theoritically), causing physical storage to be at 100%, and now icloud storage is 64/100gb used. Now let me take some photos using my iPad which is also connected to icloud. icloud now is 65/100gb used, but because my iphone is full, i won't be able to "see" those iPad taken photos because my iphone has no space to sync. Is this correct?
Nope, that’s not correct because with iCloud Photo Library enabled, your iPhone doesn’t store the full library locally. It only keeps the most recent photos and videos. Everything else gets downloaded on-demand (when you open a photo/video from the Photos app).

Great video. I have a question though. If I’ve often imported photos from my phone to my Mac. If I turn on iCloud photos on both devices how does it handle that? Does it recognize them as duplicates and only upload one version to iCloud? Or will I wind up with a bunch of duplicates?
That depends on how you imported those photos. If you imported them directly into the Photos app on your Mac, then Photos will likely be able to identify the dupes. Otherwise, you might end up with duplicates.
@@MichaelKummer Thanks for replying! Yes they were imported directly in to the Photos app (or iPhoto back in the day). If I were to wind up with thousands of duplicates how do I “undo” that? What I’m afraid of is that there isn’t a good way to do that? I do have Power Photos though which is good at finding duplicates. I have the main library on an external drive (400+GB) and a backup copy on another external drive. I haven’t done an import in a year. (I used to do it all the time but I have no space issue on my phone and they’re backed up to Google Photos). I’m thinking maybe I should import those from the phone in to my backup copy so that at least I have one clean complete library that won’t be a part of the iCloud Photos experiment? Then turn it on my iPhone and on my Mac and cross my fingers on duplicates? If I wind up with duplicates I can see if either Photos or Power Photos can find and remove the duplicates. If not then I somehow erase that iCloud Library everywhere, copy my backup library to my usual external drive, turn iCloud Photos back on using that library. My only slight concern about being extra likely to wind up with Duplicates is that I’ve used Power Photos in the past to merge two Photos libraries in to one Photos Library and remove duplicates in the process...so I have no idea if any kind of folder structure could have been altered from the original imports although I sort of doubt it...it probably just uses one and not the other but both were in the same location would be my guess. What do you think? Btw, I called Apple and two people said I wouldn’t get duplicates but I wasn’t sure how much I trusted their answer. They both seemed unsure about understanding what I was asking.
@@amoore2165 You could try adding keywords to all photos and videos in your external library before importing those images into iCloud. That way, you can easily identify all tagged images and remove them if they end up as duplicates.

Hi I just got one question I had a iphone 7plus and it’s got totally broken can’t be fix and I bought iPhone 11 now and when I backup my half of photos and videos came back and half of them aren’t is any other way I can get them back aswell please as on my iPhone 7 Plus iCloud backup was off 😔
You don't need iCloud Backup for your photos if you have iCloud Photo Library enabled. I would go to iCloud.com and check if you can see ALL of your photos there. If so, just wait a little longer (assuming iCloud Photo Library is turned on) for the iPhone 11 to sync up. If you don't see all of your pictures on iCloud.com, then your iPhone 7 didn't sync them up (or didn't have iCloud Photo Library enabled). In that case, you'd have to recover them from your old device manually.
Earlier today I went to general and clicked on iPhone storage and it had a recommendation thingy right below where it shows all the apps and how much it takes up, anyways the recommendation was abt iCloud photos and it said enable right next to it and I clicked that and now it says ‘uploading all ur photos and videos can take some time. Check the upload status in photos app’ do you know what that’s about? Or if they’re going to delete everything or not?

Hi, I recently bought a new iPhone 12 and my old iPhone is an iPhone 8. On my old phone, the iPhone 8, I was paying for the extra storage monthly and I have over 20,000 pictures/videos. I want to keep all of those pics and videos on that phone, but I don’t want to pay for the storage anymore. If I cancel the extra storage I’m paying for monthly though, will my photos and videos still remain on the iPhone 8 phone and camera roll? Sorry if you’ve already answered this question
If you have all of these images and videos on your iPhone already (because it has enough local storage and you have "Download Full Resolution Images" turned on, then cancelling your storage plan won't delete those images and videos.

-#Hackgod0173--#- on instagram fixed Mine shadowban insta Without delay he is perfect on recovery of error like that thanks for your comment on his name..
There is no fixed timeline as far as I know. Instead, it depends on how much local storage space is available and when was the last time to accessed a cached image.
So helpful But I wanted to ask if you didn't turn on the icloud at all and it's still 5gb on my iPhone7 and then I deleted the pics from recently deleted that means that they're gone forever or what?
Thank you for this video. I have 2 questions. 1. My MacBook has low storage as it is using 56 GB for Photos since I have not optimized photos on my Mac. If I decide to optimize on my Mac, how does it work when I want to print out photos with a 3rd party website? How am I able to have to full resolution photo printed out? 2. I moved all videos from my Mac to an external hard drive thus deleting them from my iCloud Library. Is it possible to transfer them back to my iCloud Library? Thank you
Hi Esther! 1) as soon as you try to access any photo or video in an optimized library, your Mac will download the full-res version and keep it temporarily. So you’ll be able to print them via a third-party without issues. 2) Yes, just copy them back into photos and let them sync up to iCloud.
@@MichaelKummer Hi, me again! So I optimized photos on Mac but when I open «about mac» I still see a yellow line that says photos are taking up 56GB, however I do see that it freed up some space on my Mac. Does this mean that I still have 56GB stored on my Mac? If so, how can I clear up some space? Thanks again
@@estherroelly Assuming that these photos are from your Photos Library, macOS will clear them over time, depending on when they were last accessed and how much HDD space you have remaining. However, it could also be that these photos shown in About Mac are stored outside of your Photos Library (maybe in another app or folder). In that case, you have to manage (delete) them yourself.
Hi Michael, really amazing andusefull video!!! I would like to ask you this though... : I have an iCloud photos library synced with my iPhone and then a Photos library on my iMac with non enabled the iCloud photos. I used to manually add pictures on my iMac through photo stream and/or cable... yet lately i discovered that a lot of pictures are missing from my iMac photo libarary. Would it beagood idea to sync now or enable iCloud photos onmy iMac? What will happen with the two different Photo libaries (local and iCloud) will one overwrite the other or will they merge? Thanks!!!!!!!
Yeah, I would definitely enable iCloud Photo Library on your Mac as well. When you do, your existing library will be merged into the iCloud version -so that might produce duplicates. If you don't want that - make a backup of the existing library, and remove all photos from it before enabling iCloud Photo Library. You could also create a brand-new library and mark it as the "system library" before enabling iCloud Photo Library. That way, you can switch back and forth between the iCloud and local libraries.
@@MichaelKummer thank you so very much!!! Last question... in order for the sync to happen (the uploads and downloads) do i need to have Photos Open all the time?? Thanks again for your precious advice!!!
@@jfrag1 No you don't need to keep the application open. Both iOS and macOS have background processes that handle the sync, even if the app isn't running.

Hi Gustavo, no, you can't delete photos from iCloud Photo Library (cloud) without having the photos automatically removed from all other devices that have iCloud Photo Library enabled.
If you are storing the full resolution photos on your Mac - isn’t the storage upgrade quite expensive or do you to connect an external hdd or ssd and allow iCloud Photo Library to sync with that?

I'm really confused because I'm trying to upload my oldest videos from my phone and put them on youtube so I can delete them from my iphone, which I understood would delete it from icloud as well. I've been doing this slowly but surely because my icloud is full. My device, though, has TONS of data. So I pulled up icloud on my computer so I could reference it while I was uploading to youtube off my phone, but then I realized that my iphone, SOMEHOW, has far more videos on it from WAYYY back when, long before I had this device with tons of data, than my icloud does! My parents have their iCloud on and was wondering if there was just a way to leave the photos on the iPhone. And yes I deleted them from the recently deleted too.
No there is not. You either sync everything or nothing. If nothing (iCloud Photo Library turned off) you can delete photos from either iCloud or iPhone without affecting the other side, but none of your new photos or changes to photos would get synched either.
Michael Kummer what happens if I have an old iPhone with photos and I wanna use a different Apple ID. How would I prevent the iCloud from automatically turning on and syncing all of the photos one there?
Hey Sally! I’ve never seen that before but I recommend logging in to iCloud.com from a Mac or PC and deleting the offending photo there. That might fix the issue. Cheers, Michael

@@summerst7965 iCloud storage doesn't increase your local storage size, it just moved local photos and videos into the cloud, thus freeing up local space.

Hi Rehan, I thought I had replied already but now I don't see the comment anymore. Anyway - I've never seen this issue before. So if you're certain that iCloud Photos is turned off and all of your images are stored on your local device, I'd get in touch with Apple support so they can check out what's going on.
Hi! I have a problem with my iCloud. I recently just expanded my iCloud storage to 50gb but it turns out that it’s a monthly subscription. When I tried to cancel the subscription it said that all of my pics will be deleted eventually and I really can’t keep paying for the subscription. Is there a way to move all of my pics from iCloud to the phone storage so i wouldn’t be afraid of them getting deleted? Thank you!

Hello, I bought an icloud plan of 2 Tb, activate icloud photos and optimize iphone storage but my local storage continues full and it seems that my icloud storage isn't filling with my photos (I'm connected to WiFi so it should be working) can you help me with that? Thanks
If I turn on “optimize photos” and I want to upload pictures to Facebook or Instagram or send them to a friend via iMessage, will I be uploading the original files or will they be the lower quality thumbnails?
That's not a supported use case and doing so will likely get you into troubles. That said, if you want to take the risk of losing all your photos/videos, you can turn iCloud Photos on your iPhone off, then delete all photos/videos and NEVER turn iCloud Photos back on again. If you do, all the deletions will get replicated to iCloud.
So I have 2 phones. I turn off icloud photo on iphone1 and delete pictures but iphone2 is intact will all photos from icloud. Will all photos from icloud come back to iphone1 if i turn on icloud photo?
Nope, when you turn iPhone 1 back on, it’ll sync with iCloud and remove the local photos you deleted before. What matter is the time stamp of those changes. Whatever happened last will get synced.
Hi Michael, thanks for your video.. I have a simple question how to delete photos on iPhone but not on iCloud. For example when I take a picture it sync with iCloud but when I delete an old photo on my iPhone it deletes on my iPhone only. Please answer me with steps
So you have iCloud Photo Library enabled on your iPhone and it's fully synched up but when you delete an old photo from your library, the delete operation doesn't get replicated in iCloud? That shouldn't happen and I'd recommend double-checking your settings and maybe turn off iCloud Photo Library, restart the phone and then turn it back on.
Michael Kummer Hi not exactly. Both my phone and my iCloud storage are sync. I want to delete a photo on my iPhone without it deleting on my iCloud when I sync.
guys just back up your photos.. u can get google photos, microsoft onedrive, and u can even put 15gb worth of pic and videos into a google drive( same as google photos ). this really worked for me....
So if i want to free up space from ICLOUD and i have sync ON can I delete them from the iPhone will they be removed from iCloud??? Which is what i want to do
I have photos on my iCloud photos enabled on my phone and MacBook, but I don't want all the photos on my phone to be on my Mac but I still want them all kept on my phone. If I disable iCloud photos on my MacBook, will anything delete on my phone and will the photos delete from my Mac, or does disabling iCloud photos just stop the photos from syncing and then I have to go and delete the photos from my Mac afterwards? Hopefully this makes sense!!
Disabling iCloud Photos on your Mac will disable the sync. So any photos deleted on your iPhone will NOT be deleted on your Mac. Keep in mind that if you do that and then re-enable iCloud Photos on your Mac in the future, you might end up with a mess because iCloud might replicate any changes to photos on your Mac to iCloud and, thus, your iPhone. So I'd either keep iCloud Photos turned off forever or not at all.

I would like to free up space on my iphone and put icloud off in the future (it’s frustrating that they always have to load), is there any way i can upload my current pictures on my phone onto a laptop using icloud so i can delete them out my gallery
You can use the Photos app on a Mac to download all original images. I don't know about a PC - maybe your best option is to download all images from iCloud.com (assuming they've been uploaded from your iPhone).
So I had used a bunch of iCloud storage with photo so my dad press disabled and delete and it deleted photo and videos that were stored in my iCloud and it cleared up a bunch of storage and I was wondering if this is correct. And also it says that it will delete photos and videos after 30 days, so on iCloud storage there is photos if I turn on iCloud photos and then take a picture will it still delete after 30 days because iCloud photos sends it to iCloud.
You won't have much more iPhone storage by disabling iCloud Photo Library. So I'd turn it back on and set it to "optimize storage." If you have iCloud Photo Library turned on and you delete an item, it'll be moved to the "Recently Deleted" album. After 30 days, the item will be permanently deleted. If you don't manually delete items, nothing will get deleted.

Thank you for clarifying what I suspected. It is mind boggling to me that Apple does not offer the option of removing from device but not Icloud but you are awesome for taking the time to explain clearly!
Glad to help!
Exactly right!
No, you can't replicate Google's behavior - that's not how iCloud Photo Library works. You either sync everything or you sync nothing. You cannot partially sync or download.

Hi Luis,
iOS will ultimately remove them from your iPhone to make space for new photos.

Thank you in advance :) hope you’re safe and well
Hi Pooja,
when you say "my iCloud Photos Backup is enabled," what do you mean? There is no such thing as a photo backup in iCloud. There is iCloud Photo Library and assuming it's turned on, it should keep everything in sync, including deletions.
If you just recently turned on iCloud Photo Library, it might still be synchronizing. If so, the Photos.app on your iPhone will tell you that.
2) Yes
3) All you need to do is turn iCloud Photo Library on and wait for your photos to sync. Depending on the size of your library and your internet connection, that might take a while.
Cheers,
Michael

You mentioned that if a photo is deleted from iPhone it also gets deleted from iCloud backup so what is the point of backup then? Even if we have plenty of storage on iCloud, the phone will eventually run out of storage if we can’t delete the photos from iPhone? I’m confused.
The main point of my video was to explain that you do NOT need to delete photos or videos from your iPhone as iCloud will take care of storage management :)

I don't use Google Photos but I could imagine the app has a setting to prevent that behavior.
How do I get my iCloud photos back on my phone in photos?
I don’t see how your photos could be on iCloud and not on your phone. Unless, of course, if you disabled iCloud Photo Library, deleted photos from your phone and now you want the deleted photos back. But I doubt that’s what’s going on here.
@@MichaelKummer if I deleted some videos from recently deleted can I get them back? Please answer

How do i remove them from the icloud storage and onto my actual phone storage? It will be great help, thanks!
Disable iCloud Photos.
Yes it’s very confusing and annoying, so I use google photos. I don’t let it sync, and I delete from phone thru google photos. They then remain on google photos, but gone from phone/device, can download easily if needed on any of your devices, pc, Mac, whatever.
Haha, yeah, that's certainly one way to work around the problem.

Your iPad downloads and removes photos and videos on demand. So it might have downloaded some items you have recently viewed. Don’t worry though, it’ll clean up after itself as you need the space for other data.

Hi Steven,
you can create and manage two separate libraries with the Photos app - one can be synched and the other one would be local to your Mac.
Cheers,
Michael

That depends on how you imported those photos. If you imported them directly into the Photos app on your Mac, then Photos will likely be able to identify the dupes. Otherwise, you might end up with duplicates.

That way, you can easily identify all tagged images and remove them if they end up as duplicates.
problem is photos disappeared automattically not deleted before that iphone was show low storage. icloud was turned off already no photos uploaded on icloud. any way to get them photos back????
in genral storage it stillshows 12gb but in photo gallry nothing
Never heard of automatically disappearing photos but without having access to the device, it’s impossible to tell what happened.

Micheal, Hey! Please help! I will get a new iphone and do not want all the photos that are on my current iPhone/iCloud to be synced to the new phone. However, I would like my new photos (received or taken) to still upload in my iCloud. How does this work?
You'd have to delete your old photos from iCloud to prevent them from syncing with your new iPhone.
I am using BackBlaze on my Mac as backup and also using iCloud mostly to free up space on my iPhone. Should I still be using iCloud as photo storage is I have back-blaze?
Yes, I would highly recommend that because iCloud isn't a backup solution in the classic sense. See michaelkummer.com/tech/data-backup-strategy/ for more info.

It does exactly what it says: upload too photos and videos to iCloud, thus enabling iCloud Photos.
Heyy! I’m using my iPad if it turn off iCloud photos will it delete on my moms phone? we use the same iCloud and email and almost everything I’m really scared if I turn it off and it will get rid of my moms photos since we share photos since we have the same iCloud will it delete on my moms phone if I turn it off on my iPad? Please tell me before I make a wrong move (my mom has work on her phone that’s why)
Turning off iCloud photos on your iPad will not remove any photos from your mom’s iPhone.

I take a lot of screenshots. Is it true they take up more space then a photo? Excellent video. Thank you.
Hey Darlene,
a screenshot on my iPhone requires about as much space as a photo. So yes, you can certainly fill up your local and cloud storage with screenshots as much as you can fill it up with photos.
Question I have 2TB I cloud storage. But my iPhone gets full.
With voicememo recordings and photos. Can I save those items to iCloud Drive. And then delete from Apple device. But they’re stored there?
Yes, you can move both to the cloud. For photos, just turn on iCloud Photos!
I have a question, if I optimize my storage and then want to upload videos or pictures from my photo library to sites or social media are they still going to be high resolution??
Yes because as soon as you try to open or share an optimized image or video, iOS will download the full-res version to your device.

Hi everyone
How long does iCloud Photo Library store the temporary downloads in phone storage as in camera roll
There is no fixed timeline as far as I know. Instead, it depends on how much local storage space is available and when was the last time to accessed a cached image.
So helpful
But I wanted to ask if you didn't turn on the icloud at all and it's still 5gb on my iPhone7 and then I deleted the pics from recently deleted that means that they're gone forever or what?
If you delete photos from the recently deleted albums then they’ll be gone forever.
@@MichaelKummer thanks for your help !

Hi Michael,really amazing andusefull video!!!
Both iOS and macOS have background processes that handle the sync, even if the app isn't running.

no, you can't delete photos from iCloud Photo Library (cloud) without having the photos automatically removed from all other devices that have iCloud Photo Library enabled.

If you are storing the full resolution photos on your Mac - isn’t the storage upgrade quite expensive or do you to connect an external hdd or ssd and allow iCloud Photo Library to sync with that?

Hi Michael, my iPhone, iPad and now my new MacBook Pro are all synced up with all of my photos on every device. I’ve just got my new MacBook and don’t want any photos on it from my other Apple devices. Can I turn off iCloud photo sharing on my MacBook Pro, delete them from there nd they’ll remain in the iCloud and on my other devices? Thank you :)
Yes, you can do that. Just make sure you disable iCloud Photos BEFORE deleting anything.
How is that possible? I never deleted anything directly from icloud before, and I thought that if I had, that would also remove it from my devices. So how do I have very very old videos on my phone that came from before I had this particular phone, but they're not on my icloud????? Thanks for any help you can offer on that.
There is a chance that your iPhone hasn't completely synched up everything to iCloud yet.
We have 2 TB of iCloud storage and optimized storage is set on all of our devices. It's been that way for years. It's never made a difference. Every phone and iPad is always on the verge of being maxed on storage because of the photos

Michael thanks a lot for your time in explanation :) I have one photo in Iphone and the same photo in iCloud. In my iPhone its 3.5 MB but in iCloud its 1 mb. Does iCloud compresses the photos when uploading from iPhone? Is it normal ?
Apple stores images in HEIC format which has a better compression ratio than JPG. That could explain the discrepancy.

Hi I just had a question. Is there a way to delete photos from iCloud without having them deleted on your iPhone? Is there a way to unlink them? I once tried ( a long time ago) tried to delete photos from my mom’s iPhone when I thought I had done this and ended up accidentally deleting like almost half of her photos.
You can always turn off iCloud Photo Library, regardless of what Apple ID you use.
Fabulous video. How do I remove a photo that has duplicated itself 1000 times and downloads every time I open my photos on my computer?
Hey Sally! I’ve never seen that before but I recommend logging in to iCloud.com from a Mac or PC and deleting the offending photo there. That might fix the issue.

What’s the status of your photo library? Does the photos app say it’s fully updated? A full sync might take days, depending on your internet speed.
If I turn on “optimize photos” and I want to upload pictures to Facebook or Instagram or send them to a friend via iMessage, will I be uploading the original files or will they be the lower quality thumbnails?

@@s_grim You got it!
how do i delete all the photos and videos off of my phone storage but keep them in the icloud?
You can't do that without disable the sync feature (iCloud Photo Library) on your iPhone.
guys just back up your photos.. u can get google photos, microsoft onedrive, and u can even put 15gb worth of pic and videos into a google drive( same as google photos ). this really worked for me....
Making regular backups is always a good idea but it doesn't necessarily solve the space/sync "issue" or misunderstanding.
You just saved me losing all my photos and videos as I was just about to delete everything.
Great explanation thank you.
Glad it helped!
So say I have a iPhone and an iPad linked to the Sam iCloud if I delete a photo on my iPhone does it delete on my iPad?
Yes, if iCloud Photos is enabled.
Disabling icloud photos will save storage on my phone?
Nope.
So if i want to free up space from ICLOUD and i have sync ON can I delete them from the iPhone will they be removed from iCloud??? Which is what i want to do
Correct.
Thank you Michael. I think I am getting it ... you have explained so well. I appreciate your videos.

So I'd turn it back on and set it to "optimize storage."
If you have iCloud Photo Library turned on and you delete an item, it'll be moved to the "Recently Deleted" album. After 30 days, the item will be permanently deleted. If you don't manually delete items, nothing will get deleted.
