- Here we demonstrate the Vax 6131 multipurpose vacuum cleaner in dry pick up and wet carpet cleaning modes. It’s a decent all in one solution, but not as easy to use as an upright carpet washer.

I really like when british people are specifically clear in their videos. Thanks for posting them!
This machine is also useful for emptying radiators. Close off both valves, put the suction head over the drain and open it with the bleed valve. One empty radiator and no spillage. Then swap out the old radiator or whatever you are doing and replace. Makes many plumbing jobs much simpler and cleaner.
Just hauled ours out of the shed which has been sitting there unused for years. Good demo, thanks. For long staircases, use one or two of the extension tubes!
I bought it for cleaning my car and house carpets. I've had it for about 4 years and found other real benefits such as the spare parts available for it is very extensive. I've not had trouble with stairs as it is quite light to me. The cable is long enough that I can clean a 3 bed house without unplugging it at all.
What a great presentation! I used my new Vax 6151 just once in washing mode, for around 1 hour, I rinsed and dried all the parts and put the machine away. I then used it a handful of times in dry vacuum mode as I have a second vacuum (also a Vax.) When I went to wash the carpets around a year later the pump had packed up. I spoke to Vax who said that as it was a few days out of warranty I was on my own.....I was very angry! I bought a new pump on-line for £25 and replaced it myself as Vax had (under pressure) offered to install a new pump for £75. Result!! Moral of the story having read other comments below is never buy a Vax in the beginning!!
This is a great review the Vax Demo said cold water but wasn't doing the job properly and makes a big difference with water temp xx
I bought one this morning around 4am, got it delivered by 9. ..I just love your reviews so much and can't wait to use it this weekend.
Thanks for the video, really useful for a first time Vax user. Much clearer than the instructions that come with it.
Glad you found a visual demonstration more useful than the written instructions.
I just wanted to say thank you for making this video. That was really useful; I'd likely have flooded something without your very clear demonstration.
+Graham Stark Glad It was useful.
The good thing about the Vax machines like this, say compared to a George, is that it is a full by-pass fan (ie it doesn't vent through the motor, the motor having it's own cooling fan); this means you don't have damp air or spray going through the motor windings, bearings and brushes. It also means you don't need a by-pass valve that opens when the bag is clogged or hose blocked as the motor will always have cooling air.
I have pimped my Vax with better filters (easy to experiment with different filter media) so it's cleaner and has better airflow, AND a 150watt power head from an otherwise dead Filter Queen. I ran it over regularly cleaned carpet (usually cleaned with a good cordless Shark) and got up nearly half a kilo of deep dirt. I have also made my own hard floor wet-clean tool with an old hard-floor head and a spray nozzle using a garden sprinkler head - no more mopping in THIS house (and the floors SOOOO much cleaner).
It's now an absolute beast of a vacuum! It's more fiddly than most single function machines, but I think it now does a better job than most of them and pretty much does it ALL :)
love your videos very informative and helpfull to me choosing the right hover.I can't believe no one is funding your hard work perhaps they dont want honest review of there product.
I love your review. You have covered every question I have about this product. Thank you very much. I have also decided to buy one of this based on this review.
Backhoe
Very good detailed video of the 6131 I have the 6151 which looks exactly the same but has a 1500 watt motor and adjustable power dial on the front of the machine. These are good machines Ive had a few although my latest 6151 is only a few months old and the water pump doesn't work anymore so it's going back to vax I prefer the George :-)
The George is a good machine but it costs a lot more than the Vax, though it will probably last longer.
Thanks a lot for the Video. I bought this Vax 6131 recently and it was really useful.
I haven't seen one of these since I was a child, and even then, I remember washing those old woollen carpets, it was great. It's never occurred to me to see this as an upholster machine. I cannot recall if the water was hot. But one thing is certain is that, these days, you can mix your own solution to use. So.. I would maybe add Dettol, along with the original solution as well, just to kill off the bacteria.
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH. YOU MADE IT SOO CLEAR HOW TO USE THE WASH SECTION.
FABULOUS!!!!!
excellent demonstration. first class thank you very much..
Good informative video . Nice colour matching tee-shirt . My machine is rubbish at cleaning carpets .
Great,thx.
I just took it from my friend to clean stairs and car seats.
Now I know how to proper use it!
😊
Ta!
Good clear informative video.
And "it only takes a minute girl..." made me chuckle!
......to fall in love, to fall in love.
after viewing this video over 4 week ago i have been out and bought one i can honestly say i find it easier than my kirby sentria for everyday cleaning plus i like the shampoo system on this vaxs its brought a lot of muck and stains out of my cream carpets that the kirby dry foam would not remove at all
that was a great review, really helped me as id no instructions.just bought a second hand one for €50.
take care
Glad it was useful. If you need parts in the future, they are widely available and fairly inexpensive.
Same, got one for £35 on FB marketplace, then bought an attachment pack off eBay. Here to see how it works.
I bought this model and I've cancelled my order. I wasn't sure about how long this will last.... I went for blue Henry wash. I'm sure henry will last me longer and I've got new baby coming soon. Henry seems to last ages. My washer will arrive tomorrow, I cannot wait to clean my carpet!
Those turbo heads are a brilliant invention.
You're a legend. Thanks so much for the perfectly demonstrated video. Happy 2022 😁👍
Thank gawd for this. Probably saved me hours of head scratching!
This machine takes up a lot of space in a house with no garage. I have two one for wash use a nd one for general vacuming.
Reason was first machine had faulty motor and was sent a replacement, but neither has been good with water/solution dispense
on washing carpets - so I use a soft brush from bucket and only suck up the water left - still cleans my rugs and carpets.
However there can be a noticeable smell of sulphide from the damp carpets next day, which dispels on dryness.
I keep all implements and machines in house like a massive jigsaw, but 10 years or more after purchase they work well and well
made appliances, even if problem on actual washing of rugs. If you can get the 6131 model, especially if you have a garage or
extension on your house.
Great video - it helped me with the wet setup - thank you 😊
Thank you. Years since I gave a carpet a wash and obviously I'd lost the instructions. Easy with this video. Unfortunately, like others it seems, quality is a bit ..... errrr. Where the hose clips onto the suction head the coupling has split so most of the fluid runs out there. Off to EBay we go :)
I had one of these 27 years ago, can't believe they still make it
It may look very similar, but the quality has dropped off somewhat.
Very clear instructions 😊 Thank you
Thanks. Just wish I had watched your video before using my new vax. I paid far too much 158.00 it does not do well on stains but gets a lot of dirt out.
You really need to pre-treat stains first for good results.
Thank you very much. Your review was very clear and helpful for a first time user. God bless you.
Thank you I was gonna buy one for my pet hair but after your video I won’t bother x
Thanks so much sir for your assistance!✊
can you do demonstration about vax v-303 wash 'n dry please....
thanks for uploading this video.. very informative 👍🏼😄
rocky roxstar Glad you found it useful.
I have 5150 for 32 years - no service needed. VAX is best!
Really helpful thanks. I bought my machine last year and have been using it dry, but wanted to shampoo yesterday and couldn't find my instruction manual. This was a great help.
Did you find that the control on the head kept slipping between modes or was that just me? I switched to suction only, but it kept pinging back to giving water?
Other than that it worked well and I was slightly mortified at how filthy my carpet was!
The control shouldn't slip between modes. If it keeps doing it, I suggest you contact Vax and see if they can send you a replacement nozzle.
Very good review! Congratulations and thank you, for your video!Icaro
ive got one of these and a rug doctor Pro carpet cleaning machine, the rug doctor has a more powerful motor but a smaller "waste tank", I use the rug doctor for carpets And the vax for smaller jobs all in all both good
That was incredible mate.. I could get a PHD in carpet cleaning now. lol.. Cheers
All these new machines are cheaply made now so I'm not surprised about the people saying that the motor blew up after 1 year or under in the reviews, a 6131 from 2005 is a much better machine in my opinion.
Vacman121 Vax machines are of dubious quality these days.
Hi great video and very informative , I used the upholstery cleaning attachment on an extension tube and now it appears to be stuck , any ideas , thanks :)
Nic Nak Try submerging the tube and nozzle in very hot water (not boiling) for a couple of minutes. Also washing up liquid applied where the tube enters the nozzle can help to free it.
ibaisaic Ok thanks for that , will try that :)

Karl Pilington has had quite the career change
Yes so apparently the shampoo crystallises inside the pump ruining it so your supposed to rinse the pump through with clean water after use.
Appreciate for the video!
That was very useful - thanks!
your now on amazon roger
Very informative video. Would the 6131 be ok to use with a sander to catch sawdust provided a bag was used to protect the filter?
I had a turbo head wow they're wicked because of how they work and spin really fast... mine sucked up a laptop screw that jammed into turbine inside the head at full speed that burst open with a bang 🤣😂
Which one's the vacuum cleaner?
Вроде все хорошо, только вот эта трубка для воды , производитель мог бы ее вмонтировать как то в гибкий шланг чтобы минимизировать ее присутствие по всему шлангу
This is very helpful thank you. Please let me know if you know where can I get the wide cleaning head for this vacuum as I only could find the small one.
Hi , I tried your tip but no luck , it just wont budge ! you wouldn't believe it would , can't be just me who has had this problem , will have to think of a plan B , thanks .
Nic Nak You could try spraying WD40 on the tube where it enters the nozzle.
ibaisaic good idea , worth a go , thanks .
ibaisaic good news update ! Vax are sending me replacement parts thanks and take care .
Nic Nak That's good. I suppose you can still use the old tube and nozzle so you won't have the same problem with the replacements.
ibaisaic great minds think a like ! that's what i thought and won't have the same problem :)
Great vid thanks
An excellent demonstration, Rodger. I have one question, will the Vax 6131 pick up dry stains that have been left by a liquid (say a wine or blackcurrant juice stain) in shampooing mode?
The Vax can remove old dried in stains but it depends on the nature of the stain really. I would recommend using the small upholstery washing head on an old stain as it concentrates the cleaning solution and suction. I personally would try to remove the stain by going over it a few times with the small head, making sure as much of the solution is removed using suction only after applying the liquid. Let the cleaned area dry and go over it again if the stain still shows. You could always pre treat a stain using a stain remover suitable for carpets and then go over it with the Vax after the stain remover has been allowed to do its work.
Ah thanks, Rodger! That's helped greatly. The nature of the stain that I need to deal with is dry, and has been for some time, and is on a short pile carpet. So I'm unsure if the Vax 6131 would be Ok on shorter pile carpets. But thank you for your help, it is most appreciated :)
Yes I had a stain and it removed it I highly love this machine
Hi, great review and demo you made here, thanks !
Question: Do we need to use bags in the vacum-only mode ?
I mean, the conic filter is not self sufficient?
Yes you need to use bags, I'd recommend finding hepa ones though
I’m here 9 years later 😅
Your t shirt matches the vacuum cleaner
Thank U very much for video!! :)
Very good thanks
Hi, thanks for the video. Would you be able go say how good this would be to clean car seats. Thanks
Thanks so much ...brill help
Thank you so much
Put a dehumidifier in the room afterwards soon have your carpet nice and dry.
Had 2 of these first one died after a couple days. Whilst the body is robust I will add that the hose isn’t very well secured to the bayonet end. I don’t think it has the build quality of Henry.
I live alone, just a 1 bedroom and get the occasional bathroom overflow or kitchen overflow onto the carpet, would you reckon this machine would be okay to clear out any moisture marks, general shampooing for odour and so on? In addition to regular dry vacuuming?
+AbdelRahman It will do all those things, but in my opinion, this Vax is a jack of all trades and master of none. Though for around £85 it is good value and takes up less space than having a separate carpet washer and vacuum.
I think the opposite on this one, the pro's for me are:
1.Easier to do the car especially with the huge cable
2.Long hose compared to an upright
3.More powerful=get more moisture out of the carpet so no chance of mould setting in
4.The lack of brushes is a good thing, brushes pull the dirty fibers out of the carpet instead of cleaning them, prefer to go in with just suction first then manually brush, no mechanical.
Cons:
1.Not nice and compact like an upright
2.Spare parts are expensive but you can get much cheaper alternatives.
You could of fake tanned to match Roger so you were both orange :)
Thanks xxx
Thanks for mentioning Amazon for the water tube: eBay was double the price! I was given this vacuum cleaner, but it also seems to be missing the black rubber part on the tank where you put the cleaning solution. Any idea where I can get this?
Vax don’t stock it and I’ve check a couple of big spares websites and they don’t have it either. Your best bet is to keep checking eBay for a second hand solution tank.
Bought mine today and i have used it, you don't get long and seem to be filling it every 5 minutes.
Don’t worry about filling it every five minutes, if it’s anything like mine, the pump will fail within a year.
Can you use the wet foot as a normal vacuum as well
Thanks you 👌
Just a constructive suggestion...I can't help thinking, if I were to demo a carpet cleaner, I'd use a mucky piece of carpet...not a clean carpet. I know you show the dirty water but I'd rather see the actual effect. One half cleaned against the other half left in its original mucky state.
If you check the other carpet washer demos on my channel, you will see plenty of dirty carpets being cleaned. At the time of making this video, the dirtiest piece of carpet was the entrance mat.
Can I use the small suction head to shampoo? The machine should throw shampoo out until there is shampoo in there.
So after you have applied the shampoo to the carpet do you need to just turn the pump off or do you flick the lever on the cleaner head to the close position and use it to such up the water from the carpet?
You can cut off the solution using the foot switch, but to save additional wear and tear on the pump, I prefer to switch it off when not in use
i am doing diy and trying to use this for clearing up - but the filter keeps getting blocked up with dust - do you know any trick to stop the filter blocking up? i know the industrial types have automatic filter cleaning systems was wondering to try it using the water to damp down the dust at source ? i heard someone say put mesh over the filter also ? the automatic filter cleaners either blow backwards inside every 15 seconds or rotate the filters i think great video thanks
+RIchard J Nash The filter will clog if you are using it without a bag. If you have a bag in, then I don't know what to suggest as the bag should keep the majority of the dust from blocking the filter.
My vac came with two pipes. Which one do I use for wet washing?
hoovers ... very exciting
how long is the delivery time for direct vacuum
Useful demo, beats reading instructions. Tried to use mine for just the second time yesterday and the attachment to the hose that goes into the machine fell off as the glue obviously hadn't lasted, and the upholstery attachment won't release water, only sucks it up. Rubbish really!
Vax are the most unreliable brand on the market according to Which? and in my experience too.
Seems so!
maria luise will let
water wont go to the hose, seems all good conected//dripping from underneeth cover.. any tips?
Will this clean musty carpets.
Hi thanks for you helpful review,
this vac is currently on special for £65.99 or would my money be better invested in a George at the same place for £167.99. I'm in the trade will be used for various plumbing building works. Thank you in advance
Where is it available for £65.99 please - so far I have only found £84. Thanks.
What is the difference between this one and 7151ss?
i loved my one
would you recommend trying to go for the older model or this one
Is the 2100 model older than 6131?
would you recommend this machine for a carpet washer. it would not be used a lot for shampooing but again little dry use.
+connor coutts No I wouldn't recommend it as it is hard work for carpet washing. I would go for an upright carpet washer.
Can you use it for curtains?
How come the wick the water up at the same time as washing the carpet do they still work like that
Yes, they still work like the model in this video.
oi can it be uesed just to suck some dirty water up from a ard to reach area? cheers
Works great but i have a bad back as an extension seems to be missing !
I've just bought one of these but it doesn't say 6131 on the machine. Have I been sent the older model.
I don't know. The model in this video is a few years old now, so they may have altered the design slightly.
At 31:47 You should have said "...and that's how to make a nice Latte"
At the end of the demonstration, it looked like he had a jug of what looked cappuccino coffee!! Stick it in the microwave for two minutes, just what you need after cleaning your carpets!! :-)!!
Yes, it was delicious served with some home made cookies.
thank u
How is it compared to vax 6151sx?
Hi there, I have the same machine and I’ve only used it once around a year or two ago. I got it out today to clean my carpets, I set everything up properly but there was no delivery of solution to the suction head so no water was coming out to clean my carpets. I tried everything but it simply just won’t release water, do you have any advise?
I will be really thankful because I really need to clean my carpets.
Thank you
Did you put the little tube into the water? The pedal is pull back to release solution and push forward to suck it up
Sumayya Noor I just used mine after a long break and had to suck on the end of the tube to get it started ..then it was fine.
Shampoo crystallises in the pump apparently so your supposed to run clean water through pump after use.
