If you dare film a violent criminal you had better choose to make your own spy camera or buy one offline- one that looks DIFFERENT from whats found online. I say this because 10 years ago i was filmed by a chinese buffet owner who wore spy glasses….I knew he was wearing them cause they’re the cheap kind you can buy online that are easy to recognize and I felt so uncomfortable that he was trying to make casual convo with me while filming me. He did that cause he was afraid I’d report him for having employees working without legal documentation or maybe he was afraid i was scoping the place to one day rob it 🙄 point is i recognized his spyware from online shopping so don’t be that guy
As someone who has had experience with investigative journalism (don't mind my Minecraft avatar), what you called a flaw is not actually a flaw. Most of the time you switch the camera BEFORE entering your destination, meeting etc., and you have it on all the time, so there's no need to turn it on during "mafia meeting" cause it should already be on haha
First rule of undercover investigation is not to make video about it on UA-cam. =)

While they're probably slightly more expensive, there are some significantly smaller and higher quality cameras that are typically fitted to a pin or a shirt button hole or in the side of a briefcase or other piece of luggage. Not unlike a wireless lav, If you needed to extend recording time you could use a USB battery pack in your pocket and connect the camera under your shirt or inside of your luggage or inside of a hat or something. The sky is the limit.

Any compact camera will do, as long as you film from behind a fine, dark mesh and LED are not glowing.
Mesh fabric will typically not even appear in the recording, as the mesh pattern is too close to the lens and will be heavily out of focus, to extent that it just won't show or obscure anything that's being filmed.
Works well e.g. from within the side pocket of a backpack.

Well, if you’re in public, I know here in America there is no expectation of privacy. Anyone can film pretty much anywhere their eyes can see nowadays there’s cameras everywhere anyways. I see a lot of First Amendment auditors use that argument but I don’t know about the UK/Great Britain.
No idea how it is since the Brexit, but filming people without consent is illegal in the EU. It is still widely done by normal people, but in theory anyone who recognizes the filming can demand the footage to be deleted and can sue if the footage is published. Almost never happens though. I have had one person come up to me and ask if he had been filmed and that was a paranoid type who thought I might be a government spy who came up while I was taking photos of gorgeous street art in Bristol, UK.
@@MiroAcronymity not true. in european laws this only may happen if the person is the main focus of the picture. if you are filming a street, filming walking in a street and not an exact person, law says there's no problem at all. if you film a certain person in public for some period of time, you should recieve his consent
@@sivyh you are correct. However, it is a bit too subjective for my taste whether or not a certain person is the focus of a photograph/video or not. I would always delete the footage if someone asks for it.
@@MiroAcronymity that’s rubbish. In the Netherlands (EU) I can film whoever I want from public and they can’t demand any sort of erasure of the footage.
It might only be against the law if both: you publish it + the person filmed can prove it tarnishes their image.
This applies for generic filming in public. If I focus on someone specifically and use their image for advertisements for example that’s also not allowed, as you ‘own’ your portrait.

on an apple watch you can remotely activate and view iphone video recording which is somewhat more conspicuous but if you can find a place for the phone to rest it'll be better footage

That's a pretty cool review of both items. Though -- when you are filming in your mafia meeting, you will need to remember to get the criminals to talk into your shirt to get the audio recorded!!! 🙂
The watch is great, you should combine it holding a water bottle so the camera can even be steady when doing a lot of movements and don't look to weird with your arms crossed the whole time.

There are cameras everywhere, but you can't use your own for some reasons...
The airport may be private but it’s use is for the public, where their are no expectations of privacy.

When wanting to film in an airport guerillastyle for a fiction movie, I would recommend a bmpcc4k/6k hidden in a handluggage case with a hole for the lense.
Its cheapo with no permission and gives great production value.

A year before you decide to do that, I suggest you set this video to private or delete it. And let's just hope someone from the airport doesn't watch your videos.
Yes yes we need a good spy camera.. the pens have awful microphones..
I've tried a few for evidence gathering.
The watch is so difficult to navigate I gave up.
The pen's obvious flaw you already pointed out.
The button camera connected to an external device: the device used some crap rubbery material. I don't use it that often but when I do, the rubber "sheds" leaving a minute trail.
I suggest mini body cameras.
Or those hidden in caps (very expensive).
If money no problem, there are some v good mini pov (point of view) cameras.
Finally be very careful where your camera points. Pervs use it for upskirt videos. You don't want your camera to genuinely accidentally film something that's incriminating. Against you.

I use my Insta360 camera for inconspicuous filming. I just let it hang off my bag and walk around. Anyone can clearly see the camera, but actually, nobody notices it.

What if the pen also vibrated? That would be way better feature. Also wide angle lens so you don't miss the shot even if it distorted
Better learn by being mentored by someone experienced if you're wanting to do investigative work with dangerous types. Don't confuse naivety for bravery. You could wind up dead or worse.
