I am totally blind and both guitars sound very similar to my ear. I am for which one has more bass. I prefer the hd28 over the d28 because of the more bass. I'd have to get my hands on a guild and actually play it and listen to someone else play it to really make up my mind. I've got a d18 that I absolutely love. If I had more money, I'd purchase a martin hd28 to go with it. I did play one hd28 once and it sounded amazing. Thanks Quinton and Paul for another great comparison.

I have owned and played extensively a Martin J-41, Martin D-28, Martin D-42 custom (adirondack/Amazon rosewood), Martin 000-42 custom (Swiss spruce/Madagascar rosewood), Taylor 810 Brazilian, Taylor 814ce, and Taylor 914ce with an Engleman spruce top. You might tell I have been searching for a heart of gold. I just recently played a Guild D-40 and Guild D-55. Both have blown me away relative to my $14,000 Martin D-42 custom. I do not work for Guild, but if you need a heart of gold in tone, sweetness and volume, and do not wish to spend the money I have spent over the years in guitars, you will not waste your time with the Guild D-40 or D-55. The only reason I do not own one is because of their smaller width at the nut. When I contacted Guild USA and asked the company if it could consider making such guitars with wider necks, it did not express any interest. I think this is regrettable because Martin did pick up on this players' need 2 our 3 years ago and finally started building more guitars with a wider neck.

Thank you, I have waited long for this comparison. The sound of a D-28 is well known, so it is great to hear how another guitar relates to it. The D-55 is on my list. I am actually looking for a step up for my 40 year old K.Yairi dreadnaught (spruce/laminated mahogany) which I mainly use for fingerstyle in open D tuning. For this purpose, I am looking for a boomy sound with great sustain and overtones. It looks like the D-55 would fit. Sometimes you see people play this guitar fingerstyle on UA-cam.

I think they said the Martin was non scalloped. I’ve a Martin D custom Adirondack with Indian rosewood and it’s non scalloped. It’s lovely but my D-28 sitka with Indian rosewood is scalloped and it’s definitely got more boom on the lows

Both wonderful. I think the Guild sounds full and rich and would accompany a singer really well. The focused Martin tone would probably mix with other instruments better. For looks, the Martin has a nice, golden soundboard but overall the Guild just looks so classy.

When you play an acoustic guitar outdoors, the bottom can really seem to dissipate. You get a real "stringy" sound.
Bring it to room, being IN to a space, even if you play near a wall, you hear the whole potential of the guitar. The strings, wood and the air.
That's kind of the contrast I'm hearing here.

Commenting on these two specific guitars, I found myself gravitating toward the D-28. I liked the punch (standard shifted bracing) and tone. It was very clear that Quinton said it had more qualities that you would need to appreciate in person. The D-55 had more of a scooped midrange. I'd love to try a D-55 and see how that feels and sounds. Of course, I'd want both if I could afford them.

If you have the extra time and skills or know someone who does' for $350.00 Yamaha FG-330.... enlarge the sound hole 3.00mm shy of the first Rosette and put on a set of EB 12's-
aluminum bronze strings.... I have both guitars shown in the video.... never would have thought a $350.00 guitar with laminated back and sides/spruce top and about 30 minutes of work would sound better than a Martin.
Much louder/better string to string definition on the highs and especially on the lows.

I've always liked the looks of the Guild F-55 or D-55 but the D-28 sounds more broken-in and the D-55 a little more brittle in IMHO. Also, the D-28 has a 1 3/4 " nut and the D-55 a 1 11/16 inch nut width. 1 3/4" is considered standard today on higher-end guitars.
