I guess would be the best way to describe what he did. Doing this corrupted him and the gods disliked this so they caused the end of his bloodline and rebirth of the Lucis Caelum line starting with Somnus Ardyn's younger brother. In FF XV he simply wanted to cause problems for Noctis and gang. I still felt sorry for Ardyn as he only wanted to help his people. It's obviously more complicated then that but what I have wrote is the gist of what happened.
