- Although Dionisi provided the speaking voice (originally in French), Farinelli's singing voice was provided by Polish soprano Ewa Malas-Godlewska and American countertenor Derek Lee Ragin, who were recorded separately and then digitally merged to recreate the sound of a castrato.
I love the face he makes when he realizes the girl is reading a book in the opera
Well,τhe theaters back then had way worst things that a girl just reading a book,to be accurate.
The strict rules to attemt an opera are more modern.
So did I, I think if I was the girl, I would have hidden from embarrassment lol.
@@kathyleendriver7283 But considering that this was the woman he married later in the film it made it pretty sweet that he locked eyes on her, and her on him during the majority of the remaining performance. Like he was singing for her.
I've read somewhere that in early times concerts lasted up to 8 hours! With several symphonies, arias, & concertos being performed..., people also ate & drank & "whatever goes" at these marathon events!
@@lucindamobley5492 I've yet to watch the movie, I've only watched the music videos and was instantly drawn to it.
Aside from all the ball jokes ,this man was considered a rock god of his time , and even if the music was a collaboration of modern music ,it is beautiful . something we will never have again Carlo Brossi and his brother Ricardo really were the perfect pair .Sometimes I like to have this lovely music flow through the house .Bellissimo💐💐💐💐

A very high price for an incredible voice. Whoever did that to those poor children, I hope they paid for it.
To be fair the "castrati" where mostly very poor kids that parents would often kick out of home cause they didn't have enough food to give them. The alternatives would have very likely to die of hunger in some back alley, or being enslaved as worker into some farm or mine to earn as much money to be able to buy a couple of pieces of bread every week.
Unfortunately, the Vatican got away with it...Even years after it was Illegal
You are mistakenly viewing history through a 21st-century frame of reference. In those days many of these boys came from dirt poor families. A son becoming a castrato was a chance to flee bitter poverty for many a family in those days.
@@Leviwosc FYI: Farenelli came from a rather affluent family and, because of his exceptional voice, was Mutalated
in order to achieve Higher Status...& it still doesn't excuse the church for propagating the practice once illegal.
@@danieldumas7361 There were more castrati than Farinelli. By far not all those boys came from rich families.
For the people who maybe dont know! at this times Opera was a event for higher society and the music what we would call nowadays Background music. they played cards, read, drank tea etc...
The explotator of the colonies .
That's somehow crazy and fascinating!
Elsalohengrin 😂😂😂 I liked u remained so polite actually what could happen behind the palquets May be even much more than you describe 😅! Usually though when the titole role castrato was singing there was much attention than when whomever else was singing. Indeed nobody loved sorbetto's arias a part from the sorbetto Itself and this says a lot in respect of what u mentioned before 😅
Church services in the Middle Ages, even in the cathedrals, were the same.
I’ve watched this movie for the first time like 5/6 years ago but still I always come back to that movie it’s literally a masterpiece !!!
people say its inaccurate because its based only on loose events but i think it really gives people an idea of the lives of castratos
3:57 that's how he makes he girl realizes her mistakes.
I would have given my life to see this.
Great movie. My heart was touched by the story and the music. The song he sings during the eclipse makes me cry everytime

Gosh, that long note! I have cried along the woman in the balcony. Very well ornamented in cadenza style.
The whole thing is sang with vibrato (?)
Yeah, it isn't trilled.
Has anybody heard the recording of the last castrati? It's actually kind of creepy, beautiful but creepy

The greatest miracle - the human voice of a maestro singer recreated by technology!
There is no singer behind this voice in the film - it is the combined voice of 2 real singers, male's and feamale's (countertenor Derek Lee Ragin and soprano Ewa Malas-Godlewska and a countertenor, Derek Lee Ragin). Here is how voice of real castrato sounds ua-cam.com/video/KLjvfqnD0ws/v-deo.html (the last real castrato Alessandro Moreschi)
Thank you George. I know that Farenelli's voice was computer manipulated from different voices. Personally, I don't like real Castrato voices - but this rendition falls in the realm of the most sublime music ever.

That was a 37 second long note!
2:45 - sends chills down my spine.
Estupendo. Magnífico.
Os "castratos" faziam performances magníficas como essa. A arte do bel canto jamais seria a mesma, a partir deles.

This is the most beautiful song then i lissen in my entier live!!🥺
The song was written by his brother (the director in this scene) for him in real life. The voice in this film was a fusion of a countertenor and a soprano. We will never know how they actually sounded like. This scene was made to show you how it may have been back then. He was a superstar of his time but only for a short period of time. He gave it all up to sing exclusively for the king of Spain that suffered from depression his singing lifted his spirits back up when he was not feeling well.
Derek L Regine and Ewa Malas Godlewska

@@ThePapasmurf1946 Sure beats Bill Withers, "Lovely Day". 18 seconds and it wasn't faked.
The Voice is Divine
It's a combination of soprano and alto mixed in the recording room, they didn't know how to recreate a castrato's voice otherwise. But I don't think they really reached the goal. Castratos voices had the pure tone of voce bianca, a child's voice, with the power of a man's.

Opera in those days especially in Venice where there were 20 public opera houses was a form of popular entertainment where people went to hear their favorite castrato and female opera singers -people often didn't care for the recitation parts which they found boring but were only interested in the spectacular songs (arias)like this one -if you owned an opera box you and your friends could close the screen and play a game of cards and only listen to the music when it came to your favorite song. Sounds crude to us but actually prostitutes used to advertise their services at these venues and many men would take advantage by closing off the screen and doing you know what! Later on reformers of opera like Gluck put an end to this kind of thing by writing operas with more compelling plots and with fewer trills and fewer vocal gymnastics!
Nice ILOVE
"Were top-tier* castrato singers superior (both in theory, due to their unique biology, and in practice) compared to either female sopranos or male falsetto-singers?"
Not often do you find a question where all accounts by people with informed opinions on the matter unanimously answered one way (a resounding "YES!!!"), yet the people who have no way of checking tend to arrogantly contradict those who had rather than defer to them.
I think if we were to speculate as to who was the objectively most capable human singer of all time, the smart money should probably be on Farinelli.
*(Moreschi at 50 with his head stuck up a big primitive 1902 recording machine does not qualify)
