I agree with your concern about flat skill systems. I have been on both sides of the skill choice dilemma. Both being the only one with the correct skills for the game, and having all the wrong skills. The mismatch comes from a DM selling a game experience not delivered, or trying to fit a preferred playstyle/role in a game that doesn't fit.
You don't really need the Knock spell either. I hear that you can use the severed fingers of hanged criminals to open locks. (That's a deep cut for the Tod's Read A long fans).
I have Crown & Skull. Due to The Attrition system being tied to equipment, this is a game I will never play. Having to use Hero points to purchase equipment, and not able to simply pick items up or purchase them absolutely destroys any sense of verisimilitude for me personally.
Having obviously not played or run this, I imagine there needs to be a mental shift to accommodate the system. It is definitely aiming for a certain cinematic or dramatic quality over that kind of practical realism.

I really did love that concept! 😈

Runehammer put out a new (10 minute) video talking about what's in volume 2. Short answer it's about dragons and setting lore.
Good to know, thanks!
