    Hey friends! Welcome to a new video 😊 Old money aesthetic is about ditching the logo (be that Hermes, Chanel, LV etc) However, I think it’s possible to work a logo in, but it needs to be vintage! What do you think? Do you agree or disagree? Hugs xx❤

    I’m in exactly the same camp. I love the sustainability of it and the look (it’s my dressing style) but the judgemental undertone of it stinks to high heaven.

    As a French national, I don't see what the fuss is about this old money thing. I dressed this way forever, just timeless/classic pieces with few logos, and a neutral palette and never called it that way, and neither did people around me. They use it as a marketing gimmick to make you spend more money. That is all :) xx
    ps: enjoying discovering Goella, thank you for showing us! I love that white short sleeve jacket but wouldn't get it with the short skirt - I will keep a look if they release it without!

    What I like about this trend is that it's encouraging people to dress up a bit more and not constantly get around in trackies. In past generations when the ladies went out for example they would always wear a hat and gloves. But in recent years you feel way over dressed if you threw on a blazer over some jeans but now it's more normal as such.

    I practiced law with many of the old money folks and they [at least in the pre-social media era] cared absolutely nothing for impressing anyone. Their names, and the names they dropped of their schools and their favorite vacation spots, said it all. This was the heyday of Brooks Bros. and Burberry, tweed jackets that had originally cost the moon but now had patches, and worn corduroy or khaki trousers. Ralph Lauren has become rich beyond the dreams of avarice by selling dreams of old money style to a lot of people who had never been within hailing distance of the truly old guard, old money -- because to know old money is to know that there is really nothing about them that makes them worthy of emulation and that they have the same faults and prejudices as the people who aren't good enough to join their clubs or buy into their neighborhoods.

    You’re not “old money” when you try to look like “old money”.

I personally LOVE big logos and gaudy accessories so I don’t think anyone will assume I’m old money just based on the simple minimalistic and “quiet luxury” aesthetic that’s getting so popular but it’s my personal opinion that quiet luxury is a little too simplistic and boring.

I’m a whole mix of styles and I also just don’t get why you would spend thousands of dollars on a bag if it wasn’t for the logo, cause otherwise why not just buy a cheaper real leather bag made by an artisan with no brand whatsoever? Obviously the reason we spend that much money on the leather is for the design and the logo. I would sooner choke than spend 5k on a bag that just looks like a regular bag I could get from Coach.

    I don't like the name "old money". To me it's simply classic vs trendy or loud. And you can be all, depending on the the time and place.
    I love the idea of buying less and better quality but it doesn't mean it has to be beige or neutral. You can find lots of beautiful quality classic pieces in the whole rainbow of colours.
    I've been practising this since I remember. Never liked fast fashion. And you don't have to be mega rich. I always make a list what I need in my wardrobe and try to hunt the best quality classics during sales. The only items I do splash out on are the handbags (obviously 🙄🙈😂).
    Have a fantastic week 😁

    "Quiet luxury" is definitely a short lived social media trend. These influencers latch on to something, hype it, and then move on once their short attention spans finds a new trend. It's so ridiculous.
    This way of dressing is actually called classic. Or even preppy. Ladylike. We have been doing this for decades. Way before social media or even the internet. I laugh how these social media people think they are innovative and created this stuff.
    Your clothes selections are so pretty!

    • @danishpastry6137
      @danishpastry6137 Рік тому

      I agree and I disagree! The quiet luxury/old money trends are as the the term implies, trending right now - but a low key, understated, no logo minimal aesthetic or style is something that is always with us - think Jill Sanders, or Filippa K to name just two - these brands have been around for ages, and aren't going anywhere. Logos are always with us, just sometimes they're really trending. Personally I go more understated, but I'm not adverse to a logo (but it's more about the item's overall aesthetic rather than the logo). Logomania will be back as a trend with the next economic upswing!

    • @danishpastry6137
      @danishpastry6137 Рік тому

      Forgot to say that yes, it's being pushed by the influencers, just as magazines have always pushed trends - that's their job, but most of the influencers I follow for their style tend to show the trends that fit in with their style. And yes some of them will move on to pastures new when this stops trending, and some of them will keep doing what they've always done.

    As far as the old money aesthetic is concerned, I personally don't consider it a trend as it's a way of dressing that has always been around, for example I've always liked Ralph Lauren and I've always bought garments from this brand.

    I have always had a 1950s type of aesthetic. My parents are much older than others and my mom was in her 20s in the fifties so she retained that style and I inherited it from her possibly. But I find those silhouettes and fabrics timeless. I can’t afford luxury. I have a few pieces bags and shoes but people always ask me where I buy my clothes. Also tailoring is so important. If your clothes fit your body properly you will be default look polished. That’s what this aesthetic/concept mean to me. Love your videos Sophie such good information. ❤

    I’ve been leaning towards wanting more of a timeless capsule wardrobe for a long time. To me this overlaps strongly with the old money ascetic. I don’t think you have to be rich to do this just committed to buying less and better. One store I really like is one quince, they sell silk, wool, 100% cotton and linen clothes for less and it’s all sustainably made. If I can buy four tops from h and m or one well made one from quince I’m going with the one from quince.

    Is it just me or someone else also thinks that Sophie sometimes wears pieces that are too short for her? Like dresses that are too short and they are not complimentary to her figure. Or jackets/sweaters that have short sleeves for her. I definitely don't like her wearing short cropped jackets. I'm sorry but i think they are not complimentary for you because you have a long torso. I think they are too short for you and they don't look good on you. I'm not trying to be mean but I just don't think they compliment your nice figure. I have the same problem. I am tall and sometimes jackets don't have long enough sleeves and they look funny on me. Or dresses that fit too short because I'm tall. In my case, im very aware of this so I try to watch out to avoid this. I sincerely hope I don't offend you. I'm just trying to give you an honest opinion. I loved the pieces you tried except for the ones that are too short for you.

    Hi, I love you Sophie. I can tell you’re covering a topic that isn’t in the sweet spot of luxury you prefer. I understand. I enjoy your content even when it’s well beyond my means. Here, it overlaps with my real life, though. Somehow when I was young, I git the idea that if you didn’t have much you should at least buy well to look your best and not waste money on trendy things. To the point, I was exactly doing the one thing you said was ridiculous- having no money and trying to look like someone who has it. I’m 40 years older than when I first learned that I should have a navy blue suit, and I’m back to creating outfits again with an entirely different, rounder body. It would be nice in my case to look nice and upscale enough so I’m not confused with the help. It happens. If you have light brown skin and are chubby, in upscale stores it looks like there’s a doppelgänger of me with each baby stroller. I’m no ones nanny, though. I understand the confusion, I just want to do my part and look like I can afford the handbag I’m there to see. Thanks for trying on all those outfits. It looks exhausting. I love the pink and cream dresses.

Today seems to be a throwback to the 80s/90s with some 70's denim thrown in the mix. All one has to do is remember it takes time to build a quality wardrobe and don't fall for fast fashion with cheap fabrics (except band t-shirts!). I will continue to buy designer pieces at consignment and thrift stores as I have since the 80's. I am also loving how easy it is to sell and buy quality clothing online today. I consider "old money" aesthetic just that...an aesthetic. I think the style is classic, timeless, and understated which I prefer. I don't think the look means a person is trying to fool anyone into thinking that they truly are from old money (there aren't that many truly old money people around!). It's a style that suites people who love it and keep it as their always style rather than following trends. My mother, who did not come from money by any means, had this kind of style. Just my opinion. Thank you for this video, Sophie!

      Its not just that. Its somewhat cringe. Old money, in this case, is a costume. The idea of people who wear chanel in an 'old money' context don't just wearing pearl jewelry or match their outfits meticulously. They wear things that are of SENTIMENTAL VALUE. Not a trend. A nice art deco piece or David Webb brooch for the Palm Beach crowd. Its not an overarching complete aesthetic in a bag... what they wear shows some aspect of their personality or history.

    Really enjoyed this video and your stylings. I think 'old money' as a fashion styling is a complete misnomer (and different from 'stealth wealth'). Real 'old money' people are rarely interested in fashion at all - their money goes into property and maybe jewellery. What people seem to be talking about as this latest aesthetic comes down to quality materials in neutral colours and classic styles - this was sold as classic French dressing last year!

  • @jamielonghurst6373

    Hi, Sophie! I really enjoyed this video and totally respect your point of view. I guess this "old money" thing is a trend, but I also think it's in response to the quite over-the-top logo-crazy, dare I say often gaudiness, of the past couple of years. The point of view of "you don't have any money, but here's how you can dress as if you do" could also be said of the last trend, which was the "I'm wearing numerous huge blingy luxury brands all over me. I sure look like I'm living the high life!" I love luxury quality clothing and handbags just as much as the next person. But I have to say I find this new trend refreshing. I've always dressed rather conservatively, even if I am carrying a luxury brand handbag or wearing a luxury brand clothing item. It's just a way of life for some of us. Whether it's in style or on-trend doesn't matter to me. It's the way I dress! For others, logos are the name of the game, and stylistically, if that's your thing, then go for it! If you love your luxury brand logos, then wear them. Wear what makes you happy and feel good about the way you look! That blingy logo-style trend is just not me. I will enjoy being "on trend" for as long as this lasts!

    • @justinwilliams7290
      @justinwilliams7290 Рік тому

      I agree to that to an extent. Since most of the time the only thing designer most people have or even sought after were accessories: Chanel bags, Birkins, expensive sunglasses, watches, Louboutins, cartier love bracelets. Those with actual money can spot that stuff from a mile away and find it somewhat irritating. Case in point: Alex from HRH Collection is very overly ridiculously angry and says 'luxury bags are ruined' or 'done' or whatever she says because now everyone has them. And its true... The cache of having those bags no longer is what it was. Now people want head to toe Gucci or whatever. Its just a cycle and a reaction. Minimalism seems to be creeping in again hence the more subdued "Old money" look. But let's be honest. Old money don't calculate outfits like this. They just get dressed. They dont pick the perfect earrings up at the shop at the same time they buy the blazer. They have those David Webb earrings from the 1980s they still wear in coral and onyx or Boucheron art deco earrings. So the whole thing is just pretty ridiculous.

    If people were only buying high quality pieces, like the ones you're showing and such, I wouldn't mind this trend as much. My big issue with "quite luxury" and "stealth wealth" style trend is that people are probably still just going to buy cheap fast fashion that mimick the look of expensive, quality pieces until a new trend comes along. Personally, I won't be making an effort to follow this trend, it's not me. I do like getting high quality pieces that I can wear for years, but I want them to match my style regardless of trends.

I was raised to invest where I could and be meticulous in their care to make them last as long as possible. It wasn’t necessarily about flaunting wealth, it was sort of the opposite in that for us it didn’t matter. Always quality over quantity in every aspect of my life, preferring to have less but that is manageable instead of having people, things that were throwaways. It feels strange to see people embrace it as a fashion trend but not a mentality ❤

But I would never think when I see someone dressed like this, that she has much money! Why should you think so or expect the others think so about you, when every good fashion store has this kind of items for few money? How could you think it would be from Chanel or another designer? It just is ridiculous to expect this. And I personaly don't even want to look very expensive, like Chanel or something. I just want to look good. That's it. 😄

    I have seen Quiet Luxury three times:
    A woman shopping at a craft store and she was wearing a suede skirt suit;
    A woman in an airport arrivals terminal and she was in cashmere and fine leather; and
    A woman photographed in a pastel pantsuit with shoes died to match and her hair had been done at a hairdresser.
