So, just to further clarify my position, since so many people are upset to see cards they like on the list and think that I hate EDH as a format: I love EDH, it is my second favorite format. You can find lots of EDH videos on my channel. I am not trying to bash EDH at all. However, all mythic rares see play in EDH, so if I made a list of cards that have never seen play anywhere, it would have 0 cards in it. The one card I feel like I made a mistake on is Mind's Dilation, which I acknowledge should not have made the list. If you disagree with my other picks thats fine, this video is a statement of my own opinion. However, if you are going to argue against certain cards on the list, good luck finding other Mythic Rares that see less play than Archangel's Light, Hellcarver Demon, and Eternity Vessel. Yes, they will work in some EDH decks, but they are only played in a small number -- again everyone, EVERYTHING sees play in EDH. Go to EDHREC and do some research, most of you who suggest cards that should be on the list are suggesting mythics that are played more in EDH than the cards on this list!
I hope that clarifies things some. I think next time I do one of these I will include EDHREC stats, since clearly the EDH community is most offended by this list.

I feel like you forgot to take into account things like paradox engine/ other things that can take these bad cards and break them. I agree, stand alone most the cards are bottom of the barrel, but if you include another card in play with it then it could change alot. My humble opinion, first vid of yours I watched. Still enjoyed your vid tho :)

Well, you can read it as "9 cards to build decks around as a challenge... and Archangel's Light". Seriously, that card is so bad, I would rather open a rare-less pack than opening Archangel's Light.

    • @Icenri
      @Icenri 7 років тому +11

Minds Dilation can help build a board advantage to exile to Descent into Madness. Also, Lich's Mirror has a nice synergy with Mind's Dilation since you don't return stolen permanents to the Mirror's trigger, they stay on your board while you refill.
Hellcarver Demon can help sacrifice Ugin's Nexus and fill the graveyard for Archangel's Light (edit: perhaps it would fail because the demon would exile too many lands, so we need to think for a fix here). It would be interesting to see if it is possible to go infinite turns by somehow returning Ugin's Nexus from the graveyard with the free cast from the demon.
Also, playing Eternity Vessel after a huge Archangel's Light can slow down the game on your favor quite a bunch. We could think of using Aetherflux Reservoir.
Finally, Ring of Three Wishes, Lux Cannon, Descent into Madness and Eternity Vessel all rely on having counters placed on them, which would set a deck building pattern.
As for Malignus, ever thought of giving it double strike? That one was too obvious, dude.

    1. Play Lich's Mirror
    2. Give control of it to an opponent somehow.
    3. Kill said opponent with infect, commander damage, or some other persistent lose condition not reset by mirror.
    4. They reshuffle, but Lich's Mirror stays in play under their control. They immediately die again due to the same lose condition, causing another reshuffle.
    5. The game is now a tie due to a neverending loop that players can't control.

The thing about Lux Cannon is that it stays on the board continuously, until an opponent can deal with it. Once you have three charge counters on it, you have an instant speed removal ready to go whenever you need it, and when you don't need it, you can build up more counters to use later. It's not the fastest, sure, but it's consistent, fairly easy to build up, targets any permanent, and while, with a lot of removal, it's a one-time use and then you need to wait until you draw something else if you need more removal, Lux Cannon lets you know that the maximum amount of time you need to wait is 4 turns. It's especially useful in mono red decks, which have virtually no way to reliably deal with enchantments.

Liches Mirror actually has a really amazing use, that being reanimating a player under your control.
What you do is gift the mirror to one of your opponents with another card and then kill them. The mirror activates and essentially resets them (to half life in edh but still) *BUT* the mirror is not a card they own, its a card they control. As a result it stays in play. That player is now immortal as long as you stay in the game, but if youre defeated that player loses his mirror and becomes mortal again. It is now in his best interest to keep you alive as long as possible. Undead player slave.

I do not agree with Mind's Dilation. It's not awesome, but in slow value-based blue decks in is actually pretty sweet. If you play it on turn 7 and wrath the board later, rebuilding will be dangerous for them. But hey, I'm just a Rashmi player, what do I have to say?

  • @At0m1cpickle
    @At0m1cpickle 7 років тому +84

I enjoyed the video and agree with a lot of this, but theres one point I want to bring up, which is the difference between a bad mythic and a failure of a mythic. While I know the reason mythics began to be printed was largely due to the fact that otherwise, with the printing template, some rares would just be "rarer" than others, but Mythics usually stick out the most (to me) as cards that do something unique. Usually, even if a Mythic is unplayable in most cases, it at least presents an interesting idea that hasn't been tried before, which I say justifies its existence at least. (I feel this way about most cards on the list, as at least the IDEA is something neat). I feel that no mythic should really ever be a mythic just because it's strong, despite being fairly basic, and that is what I consider truly a waste of a mythic slot (I can understand some for limited reasons, but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth). Archangel's Light is an example of a true failure in both departments, as it both incredibly weak and incredibly uninteresting, having the complexity I'd expect to see on an uncommon, while being utterly unplayable everywhere.

      @abderianagelast7868 7 років тому +2

Well, the Elixir only costs you 3 mana to gain your graveyard back in your library as opposed to the 8 of Light, it tucks itself back into the deck as well, and it can be activated at instant speed. Additionally, it is colorless, making it possible to use it in any EDH deck. Any EDH deck that wants more value off its cards, or any deck worried about milling, will benefit from having an Elixir. It does not see any use in Modern, sure, but it's significantly more usable than Light.

Elixir of Immortality was technically one of the win conditions for RtRavnica standard control decks. Those decks were built to just do more things than the opponent and eventually value them out, elixir let them keep the value train going with no fear of milling themselves out. Archangel's light was available at the same time and in their colours, but Elixir did the job better.

The biggest thing you missed with the Lich's Mirror that is fairly important to most victory's I've heard of with the Mirror is that you get to keep ALL mana you have spent that turn. So, let's say you played a Channel at some point and then paid your entire life down to kill you and start over... you still have 20+ colorless Mana in your pool to play around with with the seven cards you just drew. It's EXTREMELY deck dependant and of course, very useful in Combo decks for the most part.

The fun thing about the vessel is that it combos really well with aetherflux reservoir in EDH. Here’s how it goes.
You have more than 50 life, with the reservoir in play. Play the vessel, kill a player. Drop a evolving wilds. Kill a player. Crack the wilds. Win.
This also combos well with Vorel of the Hull Clade, because of his ability.
You have 40 life. Play the vessel. Tap Vorel. Double. Land for turn. Life total is doubled. Next turn, tap Vorel, play a land. Rinse repeat.

Malignus seems pretty legit in EDH. Someone on the table will have much higher life than others, so you can one-shot a lot of players, and 5 mana isn't even that much investment by EDH standards.

Doomsday used Lich’s Mirror for a while, along with Channel. It was really good because Channel let you create as much mana as you want and the Mirror kept resetting you anyways. Then, after looping this a bunch of times because your deck was whittled down to your board, your hand, Doomsday, the 5 cards you selected from Doomsday, which normally consisted of Ancestral, Channel, Lotus, Lich’s Mirror, and Tendrils, you will likely loop with Channel and Mirror a bunch of times until you feel like casting Tendrils of Agony.
So yes. This was the one use for Lich’s Mirror, and it was in Vintage Doomsday.
I know this because Doomsday was my signature deck for Vintage for the longest time, and this was my favorite kill because unlike other Doomsday kills, holding the combo pieces in your hand did not mean you can’t combo.

don't want to be that guy. 10, 9, 8, are super abusable in Daretti/Mono R Stax. Nexus is a Great Welder Target, in additon to being Stranglehold number 2. Lux cannon, without access to unwinding clock/clock of omens/voltaic key is pretty bad.
most Daretti decks are already running heavy in the mana rocks department. 5 mana isn't to hard to get to to fetch out lock pieces, however in other color stax decks there are superior cards to ring.
outside of that. 6-1 is on topic. 7 is a Staple for Horde of Notions/Mayials Aira/fling/warstorm surge. Granted.... its a very situational card that has shrinking returns. These notions are coming from EDH/CEDH. Im not saying everyone plays hermit druid/Mizzix. However there are some very solid cards that don't see play in meta's.
In other Constructed formats. yeah. Everything on this list is not going to see play in a 60 card deck.

Mind's Dilation EXILES even land cards, which is better than it seems with all the nonbasic lands people use. Again, bring this card around to play against the guys I play with. One guy can't help but build high-octane power decks with really useful cards.
Lich's Mirror? Either Ghostway or controlling your opponents creatures, and Suspend cards.

Eternity Vessel? Oh, c'mon, man! Vorel of the Hull Clade, Gilder Bairn, Phyrexian Unlife, Necropotence! Need I go on???
Archangel's Light? Great for decks that use dredge, lots of tutors, or self-milling combo engines.

Why would you play Archangel's Light in dredge or self-mill? Those decks want to see cards in their graveyard. Paying 8 mana to gain a bunch of life and shuffle cards back into your deck is honestly a really bad bargain- you can cast some insane cards for 8 mana in EDH and this doesn't even come close to any of them.
As for putting tutor targets back in your deck, I don't think you'd want to play a card this bloody expensive and inefficient. Much better off with Elixir or similar cards.

Archangels light can’t cost less than 7. I do agree this is even bad at the uncommon power level. It is a common not a mythic rare. But if it cost 6 it is instantly playable in vintage mana less dredge. Allowing the deck to go off multiple times. Not something magic wants to do.

#4: Lich's Mirror. I know someone who built a deck around this card. He made it so he can always play this card every single turn after the first time he plays it, so the opponent would literally draw a card every turn and mill themselves. Cruel, but it's fun to see top tier decks scooping after about 3 Lich's Mirrors. I believe he used blink effects to replay it, but I'm not sure anymore.

"I think lich's mirror is a good 5-drop, especially if you have nothing else to cast on that turn." A 5-drop that does nothing to effect the board state is a terrible card, and is actively putting you behind your opponent. When Lich's Mirror ability triggers it sets you to turn 0, while your opponent is light years ahead of you on board, they just killed you after all. Seriously, think this through, if you're playing against aggro they'll just pound you for at least 5-8 a turn while you're still playing out your lands and the occasional low cost creature and removal. If you're playing against a control player (me) they're trying their hardest not to laugh as they're so far ahead on resources there is virtually nothing you'll be able to do to pull ahead. Feel free to continue playing bad cards and wonder why you keep losing, after all that is how the card triggers.

The thing about the lux cannon and the ugins nexus is that if your playing an artifact combo deck (which i do) they are incredibly easy to break. While this does not excuse them from being, in general, bad cards, having your commander being daretti (a gobbo who wants big stupid artifacts in the graveyard) and having a large amount of untap shenanagins makes these two cards especially useful

  • @tylertheurer9122
    @tylertheurer9122 7 років тому

Minds Dilation is huge in Yidris decks, adding another source of free spells and making it really hard for opponents to keep up. Not to mention being one of the best spells to cast with cascade. It is also really strong in combination with Rashmi, Jori En, Jeleva, Mirari (artifact), Riku, Wrexial the risen deep, and more so any deck that utilizes those cards sees pretty significant value.
It does have variable value, but the fact that it exiles the card regardless of whether you cast it means that at the very least you are denying a card. In decks where you can ramp and get board presence in your first 3-4 turns, Mind's Dilation becomes a foot-on-the-throat turn 5 play that allows you to steal things your opponent wants to draw.

I have a casual Modern permanent denial Bolas deck that always maintains land and hand advantage over the opponent. In that, Descent into Madness is a fun finishing blow. Archangel's Light actually did some good work for me in Narset EDH. My graveyard got huge with all the cards I was cycling through, and getting to cast this card for free was nice. That and getting all my awesome cards back into my deck. Especially since I would usually play a card to get all lands in my deck exiled, so I could have a 100% hit rate with Narset. Gaining potentially 40 life or more really made the deck last longer, especially since Narset gets set back a lot if she does go back to the command zone and costs a ton of mana.

Some people have probably already said it, but in an Oloro EDH deck is really one of the few places you should ever see an Eternity Vessel. It cares a lot about gaining and/or stealing life and a well built Oloro can easily make Eternity Vessel worth it. I often combo it with Aetherflux Resevoir for a late game finisher if my Debt and Insanguinate didn't end it.

Gisela has a pretty memey combo with malignus. It one shots any opponent with even life and leaves the rest at 1 since its damage is doubled and its half your opponents life

I'm not upset on seeing Mind's Dilation. I only like to clarify that I use it in a Vial Smasher Deck where every spell I cast first that turn turns into damage so I like it for that reason :).

Descent into Madness is INSANE in EDH playgroups in a token heavy deck with token generators like a zombie spam deck with Empty the Pits. Your EDH playgroup will hang you after, so keep that in mind, but it is a hilarious card if you get it going. Yes, obviously if you wiff and do not get your zombie generator going, you are going to die horribly, but that is true for any elaborate combo.

I have won several games with the mirror using an aggro machine gun deck. After the mirror effect happens, it usually results in me rapidly finishing off my opponent, because I have a second chance to kill them, as well as having the high chance of getting the mirror out again

    “Lich’s mirror is unplayable”
Tell that to Matt Nass in vintage with Channel 😉

Imagine though, Lux Cannon in a Tezzeret Infrastructure deck. Tens of those demons charging and firing every other turn, wiping out fields just constantly. And with Karn, Silver Golem you can create an emergency task force of 4/4's at any time.

Malignus is one of the best cards in a value-centric Riku deck. If at any point you can connect both Maligni with the same opponent's face, you knock him out 100%, which is pretty strong.

Hellcarver Demon won me several local tournaments back when it was Standard Legal.
    IIRC it ran:
    x4 Hellcarver Demon
    X4 Warp World
    x2-3 Emrakul, Aeons Torn
    x4 Bogardan Hellkite
And then everything else was dedicated to massive green ramp.
    Such as:
    X4 Mul Daya Channelers
    X4 Awakening Zone
And a bunch of Eldrazi Drone cards.
Hellcarver didn't even care about Baneslayer Angel back then, as it could still trample through or people would just let it hit on the chance that I'D whiff.

Interesting combo for Lich's Mirror could be to somehow get out Worldfire and Lich's Mirror afterwards. Put your opponent at 1 and you at 20. Load the rest of your deck with cheap burn.
The hardest part would be cheating out the Lich's Mirror, which could be accomplished with Jhoira of the Ghitu. Suspend Lich's Mirror, then play Worldfire anywhere within those 4 turns. There's also a 1-drop card for removing time counters, so you could Jhoira effect (2 mana) -> Remove 1-3 time counters from suspended Lich's Mirror, then Worldfire. If you don't want to/can't get mana ramp for whatever reason, you can suspend Worldfire the same turn as Lich's Mirror and have them trigger on the same turn. With this route, assuming you remove 1 time counter from each of them, it's only a 6 mana investment to put yourself at game start and your opponent with 1 mana and no resources.
Ideally (could start on turn 2 with proper mana base, probably)
    Turn 3: Jhoira
    Turn 4: Suspend Worldfire + Lich's Mirror
Turn 5: Play two Clockspinning, W+LM now at 2 time counters. Use 3 mana left over to counter anything big if needed
Turn 6: Stall for 1 turn
Turn 7: Resolve Worldfire THEN Lich's Mirror (you pick the order as you have priority), use any burn spell you have mana for.

Lich's mirror + channel + prismatic star + tendrils of darkness. You can storm out a ton of artifacts like prismatic star that draw and filter mana. Get a lich's mirror out and suddenly you are able to draw 7 cards and get 20 more life for channel.

I'm actually surprised Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded never made it it to the top 2.

mind's dilation is an awesome card in EDH, and i know you said that doesn't count since it a niche situation, but pretty much any blue deck can play this and it will help
    in my opinion that is

My friend loves to cheat things out, he has multiple edh decks where he does so. And he uses minds dilation to great effect. Usually finding a way to get it out on turn 3 or 4 and reaping the rewards while others are still setting up

I use eternity vessel in a deck that runs necropotence and bolas's citadel and other similar effects. It works pretty well. You just pay however much life you want and then drop a land and you basically got those effects for free. It's also especially good when. You pair it with alhamarret's archive because if your life total is lower than the charge counters and you drop a land, you actually gain life equal to twice the difference between your total and the counters. It's 100% a niche card but it can be pretty devastating with the right deck
