  • Great speakers for their size. These are the best sounding little bookshelf speakers I've tested. Really the only flaw is their low efficiency, but this isn't enough to ruin them.
    Sensitivity:
    Micca RB42 = 83db
    Pioneer SP-BS22-LR = 85db
    Sony SS-CS5 = 87db
    Sansui SP20000 = 93db

    This is a basic audio comparison just to demonstrate the RB42's low sensitivity and laid back midrange. This is not a test of fidelity. The only way to know what speakers are going to sound like for you is to take them home and set them up in your room with your equipment. At a store and on UA-cam can't reproduce this.

    I think what alot of reviewers miss about the rb42's is their compactness and by extension their versatility. I have them set up in a 2 channel stereo home theatre system along with a Yamaha receiver so they do double duty for music as well as tv speakers instead of a soundbar in my bedroom . Most other speakers are not ideal for this as they are too tall and will block the tv screen unless you mount the tv too high. And they fit fine with the receiver on my 4 foot wide dresser. So use case is also a very important factor and can be a big plus for the Miccas depending on your use case. Also the low bass extension negates the need for a sub in my bedroom so it's the perfect speaker for small rooms where space is an issue or rooms that have a dual purpose i.e. a bedroom with lots of other furniture where you don't necessarily have an ideal space for a sub. Really fantastic speakers for their size and price. Glad I went with the Miccas!

      I bought mine FOR portability-- the sound quality was just a bonus.
      The wife and I travel to remote places kayaking. We'll rent a cottage for a full week, and while you can always get a phone signal over the large bodies of water, you can rarely get internet. These tiny speakers along with powerful but tiny SMSL bluetooth amp bring full size sound to a smallish cottage.

    I totally agree with your comparative review results/preferences. I own pairs of the Sony as well as the Pioneers. I also have the Fluance SX30s and Emotiva B1+. With all sensitivity ratings being similar (+/- 2 Db), I would rate these speakers accordingly: 1) Fluance SX30, 2) Emotiva B1+, 3) Sony SS-CS5 and 4) Pioneer BS22. I considered getting the Micca RB42s for a long time but glad I held off, even though they get great reviews.

    Would be interesting to hear the Rb42's adjusted to match volume of the others. It was also doing a ramping up phase each time you switched which seemed to take 1-2 seconds for the sound to fully kick in, which before I noticed, accentuated the difference in sensitivity a bit.

    • @iowaudioreviews
      @iowaudioreviews  3 роки тому +2

      Its the stereo mic on my Galaxy S9. It auto adjusts because the loudness is changing when I switch speakers. IF the Rb42 had a typical sensitivity of 86 or 87db they would be near perfect little speakers for the price. The low sensitivity is really the only major con especially if like you audio louder and dont have lotts of watts. BUT for the average person they won't notice and will just enjoy the delicious audio they turn out. Still best compact Bookshelf Speaker out there.

    • @paulyd0021
      @paulyd0021 3 роки тому

      @@iowaudioreviews I'm tempted to get them as my main front speakers for a budget small living room minimalist 5.1 setup, but the receiver I bought is a lower end Sony DH590, they claim 145W per channel @6 ohms (but in reality it's 90 watts RMS @ 6ohms). I'm a little worried about it having enough to power everything at the same time and concerned about volume output matching. I havent had the chance to try out the receiver yet so I'm not sure if I can control the volume of each channel separately. I was thinking of a pair of RB42s with a RB42-C or OoO as the center.
      Another concern, even though I like that that the RB42's have decent lower end for a bookshelf, someone told me that its not good to crossover the same frequency ranges on different speakers in a setup, so if the sub is handling some of the same lower end frequencies the RB42's are, it can cause some mudding of the sound in that range because they're competing for that frequency space. I'm not sure how much that is true, but if so, maybe I'd be better off going with the Sony CS5's as my Front L/R.? or the cheaper MB42x. Or the Pioneers.
      Thanks for putting these comparisons out there btw :)

    • @iowaudioreviews
      @iowaudioreviews  3 роки тому +1

      @@paulyd0021 If you want to stay compact get good performance and not deal with the Rb42 issue I'd recommend using the the Mb42x for fronts and backs and then the Mb42x-c as the center. Even pick up a micca 10 or 12 sub should be a great system for cheap. Using all Mb series speakers you shouldn't have to adjust gain for each channel much unless your room/setup is wierd and not all speakers all fairly equal distance from the couch. For the sub use the LFE/RCA input and set the LFE in your reciever to 100hz. This sends freq above 100hz to the main speakers and everything under to the woofer. You don't want the small speaker dealing with to much of the low frequencies as it limits their ability and can damage them if you want to crank movies up. If you got a sub let it do the low end heavy lifting. Power wise 90w rms should be enough unless you want it quite loud and have a big room. The loudness difference from 90w to 145w is about 1db differences so even if the Sony was 145w rms you would really be able to tell. Look up a watt logarithmic chart. 90w is a good amount of power for most people in a typical living space.

      @iowaudioreviews  3 роки тому

      Well it always depends what you want to spend. For the surround speakers and center channels I'd just buy to more set of the CS5. For a great subwoofer on a budget Dayton Audio SUB-1200 or SUB-1500. This will give you a good 6.1 system. I've heard good things about Denon. I'd look in that direction maybe even pick up a new or used one off ebay. Again depends what features you want and your budget. I don't do surround I just have a pair of Sony CS5 powered by a little SMSL SA300 in my main room. Plenty good for TV for the wife. I don't watch much for TV or movies.

      No. They both sound great for the price but the Sony CS5 have better bass and midbass due to their larger woofer. The 4" woofer in the bs22 gets over whelmed at higher volumes in some music.

    Hello there! I do appreciate the kind of job you're trying to do here. We lack a lot of this in a world where we need to buy things online, without having the opportunity of listening to these speakers anymore. But, I'd like to let you know that the kind of music you chose for the A/B comparison is not good for the purpose at all. We dont get as much (how can I say this?) of a dynamic range out of it which means we are not able to tell if a great variety of frequencies are being well reproduced by the speaker. All I could hear with this song is a bunch of noises and that one speaker does louder noises than the other and that's not very revealing.
    What I am trying to say is, you are going in the right direction because this kind of comparison is very useful although you should choose more songs like with an acoustic guitar, with singular human voices, things like a female singer doing jazz or a folk song really well played, and then, maybe, you could use some RnB, some soul music, but always keeping in mind that you need to play songs that will make the speakers reveal what they can do.
    Also, I dont know what rig you're using for recording currently, but, what it is doing is record the acoustic of your room. It is not capturing the speaker itself. I know how expensive this might be, but if you can buy yourself a set of stereo mics (with a flat curve) and a professional recorder like the Teacs or the Zoom's ones, or even with the DAW in your computer (just like Zeos do) it would improve a lot the audio on your channel. Well, anyway, I dont know if I am being useful or not, but, I just wanted to point this out as someone who has been enjoying your videos and wishing you all success. Thanks for the information man!

      I agree on some things. I do these videos with a Samsung Galaxy S9 since it has decent 1080p video and built in stereo mics. I would use a stereo mic setup but my channel is small and I have a full time job, family and remodeling a house so my time is limited. On the other hand there is no point in trying to facilitate a true audio test through UA-cam, its just not possible. I don't compare all the speakers I review, only the ones I know people will easily be able to notice a difference. I felt the RB42 would be a good speaker to demonstrate low sensitivity compared to other bookshelf speakers and high sensitivity of large speakers. My next comparison I'll use more than one song. At the same time trying to keep my videos under 30 minutes LOL. In the future if my channel grows I may consider a patreon or somthing so I can improve some things. The Sansui speakers are louder, but that's all they have going for them. They sound like a cheap Japanese transistor radio from the 60s.

    I would love for you to compare the Micca RB42 (now $149.99 on amazon) to the Q Acoustic 3020 (now $149 on amazon) - the are both very close in size and specs - the RB42 being much heavier / denser 🤠🤷🏻
