  • A story line of video clips which describes how I developed a sit&switch paddling technique based on a blade originated from a kayak wing paddle.
It discusses how I attempted to design a different canoe paddle by adapting existing models before changing tack and modifying kayak paddles as a single blade alternative.
It is a setup and technique which works for me in boats from Darkside Canoes.
The film does not purport to persuade canoeists to adopt this approach, it simply offers and alternative.

Interesting. Typically a wing blade will move sideways away from the kayak as you rotate. In your canoe setup the blade stays approximately the same distance from the boat, is that deliberate?

Hi Duncan, I'm hoping to refine the style to move the blade path slightly away from the boat but the wing effect is quite small due to the compromises I had to make to get it symmetrical. Most of the benefit is from the scooped shape and the rotating trunk technique.

I think you need to get coaching on your single blade stroke before you try to reinvent it.
