I'd say keep the Herliman on the job for a little while longer. Look into replacing it when the sheds up and things are more settled i would say. Seems to be going alright at the moment.
Agree!! Then, Tom, treat yourself to a Case Maxxum/Vestrum, nice and bigger tractor that’s brand new and will be your primary one going forward, ntm with it being bigger HP it’ll give you comfortability as the farm continues to grow so that you’re not looking at upgrading 5-7 yrs down the line!
Good video Tom, be very careful when buying second hand, its better the devil you know. Some have been doctored to look good but as soon as warrantee runs out so does the tractor. Still stick by my Sunday guess of 170/180.

The company quite literally replaced engine and a couple other bits repainted and stuck back on road.....bit unsafe in my eyes doing that bc it can have hidden. Things u won't know about
I have a friend who works on a farm, his toyato hilux pickup was bought in 1978 and has 640,000 miles on the clock. Nearly everything has been replaced or fixed, but the engine is still the same
have you tried molasses ? it helps animals handle dry feed plus a little energy can either get mix it with you're cake mix or get a special drum that the cows can like it as the drum spins in its box, don't know if you can get blocks of it. And guessing 135.

the claas triple mowers i used to be on would somtimes do that stripe and i worked out it was the skids, where they met and where the blades crossed there was like a gap/mark from stones or bent blades catching. And where the skids met you could see a little bit of grass caught so we used to grind it smooth and fill with a bit of weld so it was sqaure again And that normally stopped it but not sure if those mowers would be the same as a claas bit would be worth a look as changing the blades didnt always seem to fix it for me. Hope that may help tom

Tom for phosphorus we use Fleet Enema drench very cheap, very effective. Always use on milk fever cows,and will work when calcium doesn’t quite be enough.good luck!
That frame on the jcb will look weird to you compared to the manitou, JCB have a totally different mast, personally prefer the manitou mast/attachment points!

Driving in the rain for some reason thinking about your farm. You probably have already considered this but are you able to use your dry cow shed for the high yielders, use the young stock shed for the dry cows to reduce numbers out to reduce poaching while your waiting for your new building? I imagine conditions will be changing fast with the wet weather ☹️ If you can, hopefully the ground will hold up longer...
new is nice, but a good nick second hander will do you, the hurliman has done you the well over the years for the cost, but that new bigger kit will start to take its toll. brand wise is down to you,but sure john cornwaits ? will sort you out with a decent case of some description . i would say massey,but i am biased thats all we ran . as always cash is the biggest factor

I think the risk of being let down at a critical time by the Huriliman would make me think the investment in another frontline tractor is an important investment. Personally I would rather have back up from the dealer on a new or nearly new model.
Refering to the new tractor part. Yes seeing a 2016 150hp Massey for 28k cheap, considering the fact you see 2015 Dyna 6's at £35-36K, but the seller may be taking into consideration the tax on that. I would still give him a message, you can usually tell by the way they will message you if there out to scam you or not 👍
Maybe the 28k tractor has 10.000-15000 working hours on it, it's a more realistic price when it has that much hours, but being Tom I would not have bought it. It's a range where more troubles and more expensive problems are starting to come.

Have the fields gotten drier than the last cut ? More drying equals hard bumpy ground but maybe they were a bit wet last time which would give the fields a bit more give when travelling
Blades are cheaper than the grass you leave behind I turn or change them every 50 to 70 acres, if the corner wears back they will not cut clean if you go faster than 8to 10 km. A light sharpening will get you another few acres
You should take your battery angle grinder in to the field with you to give the offending blades a quick sharpen in situ. Buy the brand of tractor that has a nearby main dealer, for quick parts and repairs.

I seen cases where the blades have come off the machine bc of being unbalanced flew across the yard and smashed windows on vehicles driving down the road 500+meters away narrowly missing the drivers neck. So yeah incorrectly sharpened blades is bad. Hence why most buy new or take them to a special shop to get them sharpened.
@@southaussiegarbo2054 My Mower has NEVER had the Blades "balanced" I grind them down to points flip them over and do the same. Maybe your thinking of a Flail mower those things are hellish if you don't keep the blades balanced with each other... as I found out after losing a blade..

By the way I was wondering how can you stay with all windows opened on the tractor while mowing without ear protection. Surely after that you're getting off the tractor with your ears beeping. In some years you could end with permanent damage. Take care and keep up with your awesome farm!

Staggers is horrible I had 2 zwarbles one was a lot of money and the other was its lambs they got it and died make it so I've never put a zwarble in that field ever again
I have a fertilizer spreader (if you know what a ‘WigWag’ is?) that is over 60 years old and works perfectly…the manual says it will hold over 1000lbs of fertilizer…but I have never put more than 700lbs in it…and here it is 60 years old, a wee bit of rust and nothing ever broken on it….hmmmm. How DOES that work!? PS..I think that those creaks and groans as the hydraulic cylinders lift the mower are trying to tell you that weld joints (or the metal plate near them) are beginning to stress crack… We had a weather bit called a ‘heat dome’ form over our area that caused 117F (47.2C) for 6 weeks..we never got a second harvest in our valley that normally gives us a 4th alfalfa cutting EVERY year! After the rains our fields kick up fine dust still and we had to buy hay…that went from $80/ton to over $550! Even our winter grain went up to over $700/ton! For the first time in my life I had to buy seed to replant my devastated pasture lands. 6 weeks that cost me two years gross income.
Living the in-depth information, to a non-farmer I find it interesting how and why things work to produce the quality of milk and meat. Thanks Tom and The Ging!
Just to add my last comment which I accidentally sent before I had finished. I think a good well serviced second hand tractor is definitely needed . Bite the bullet and get something 150 up plus. Decent sized tyres, passenger seat and some form of front weights and linkage. That Massey might be ok but you get what you pay for I would suggest. Perhaps something to support the Hurliman and review in a year or two. You could get in touch with Rory Day editor of Classic Tractor magazine and put into a presentation UA-cam and his magazine , expert advice might be mutually beneficial.
Shop around for a tractor. Massey would be my choice of tractor but I’m biased. Look at the 4cyl for your job. 6616 or similar. Nimble around the yard.

we had a reco mower that standing grass between the discs. our cure was lengthen top tink because the bed pitch is to steep.
I believe I saw one or two cows waving at you Tom, happy cows produce more milk, more milk makes farmer happy.

Definitely have a look at a used Massey Tom, try Andy Sherriff (me) at Chandlers farm equipment.

I have a fertilizer spreader (if you know what a ‘WigWag’ is?) that is over 60 years old and works perfectly…the manual says it will hold over 1000lbs of fertilizer…but I have never put more than 700lbs in it…and here it is 60 years old, a wee bit of rust and nothing ever broken on it….hmmmm. How DOES that work!? PS..I think that those creaks and groans as the hydraulic cylinders lift the mower are trying to tell you that weld joints (or the metal plate near them) are beginning to stress crack…
We had a weather bit called a ‘heat dome’ form over our area that caused 117F (47.2C) for 6 weeks..we never got a second harvest in our valley that normally gives us a 4th alfalfa cutting EVERY year! After the rains our fields kick up fine dust still and we had to buy hay…that went from $80/ton to over $550! Even our winter grain went up to over $700/ton! For the first time in my life I had to buy seed to replant my devastated pasture lands. 6 weeks that cost me two years gross income.

I think a good well serviced second hand tractor is definitely needed . Bite the bullet and get something 150 up plus. Decent sized tyres, passenger seat and some form of front weights and linkage.
That Massey might be ok but you get what you pay for I would suggest.
Perhaps something to support the Hurliman and review in a year or two.
You could get in touch with Rory Day editor of Classic Tractor magazine and put into a presentation UA-cam and his magazine , expert advice might be mutually beneficial.

Shop around for a tractor. Massey would be my choice of tractor but I’m biased. Look at the 4cyl for your job. 6616 or similar. Nimble around the yard.
