All week the power was off. We are concerned about how to cook, keep safe in the dark, and get work done. But If we mess up our energy plans, we may have to worry about thousands of job losses, or being permanently in the dark.
We might be without drinking water and food if the effects of climate change are not held at bay. We are heavily dependent on coal power stations, plagued with cost overruns and corruption. Emissions from those power stations are causing temperatures to rise and weather to become violent.
Beira in Mozambique is under water after cyclone Idai. South Africa had a severe drought, pushing up our food prices. All made worse by climate change.
Do we have a plan to keep the lights on? To generate electricity in a way that doesn’t destroy livelihoods or our living environment? And can we get safe, affordable clean energy to all our citizens?
