- More than 60 years ago, Johns Hopkins researchers took cells from a cancer patient - cells that fueled medical breakthroughs, but were used without her consent. Now, her family has reached an agreement with the National Institutes of Health. Terrell Brown reports.

In 1951, it was not required to ask for consent. But the fact remains countless amounts of money were made using those cells while Mrs Lacks was buried in an unmarked grave and her family and descendants can't afford healthcare. They do deserve something.

It is unethical for the National Institutes of Health to not pave a way to offer Henrietta Lacks' descendant some form of financial resolution for this very unethical act. Millions of dollars have been made on the HeLa cells and the use of these cells continue to bring wealth to the medical community. The two family members who will sit on this committee... are they trained scientists to have an understanding of scientific/health issues? A case study in unethical behavior continues...

to be fair the scientists did all the work, it was unethical that the family and Henrietta herself was not told about them taking the sample and distributing it, but the monetary gain was from the work of the scientists, the family shouldn't be getting any compensation for the work of others, and they also aren't looking for monetary gain, just a say in how the cells are used.
What WORK?! All they did was study the cells, that's all. They didn't create anything that wasn't already there! So what work did they do? Research chemist buy chemicals to make medicine, however this woman's family gets nothing! Also, lest we neglect to mention all the horrible things institutionalized medicine has done to black people, i.e. The Tuskegee Experiment. Now they profiting today from the very people they tried to destroy

Errant nonsense...the scientists would have nothing of this family's to work with if they hadn't took the deceased cells and distributed them ALL OVER THE WORLD!!! @@joelates5334 STUDYING CELLS IS IN FACT WORK. All HeLa cells does is reproducing indefinitely which is why they're the perfect test subject as a human cell. Everything else is new and the work of scientists who will for example study how the cells behave with certain viruses to develop vaccines. This specific story has nothing to do with racism and is in no way comparable to the tuskegee study. Remind you that they are cancer cells. What work did she exactly do then? Winning the genetic lottery/curse of having never dying cancer cells?
@@stop5730 But it is still her genetic material. And on the whole, those cells being cancerous in nature does not in any way discount the fact that they belonged to her person. So with that in mind, this black woman's family should have gotten paid for her helping to change the landscape of modern medicine. Because whether you like to admit it or not, the work of "harvesting" cells is NOT exactly a scientific breakthrough by the global medical community.

If you were actually interested in her story you would've known that this was not the case. The whole purpose of her procedure was to remove all of them as they are CANCER CELLS. But the doctors weren't able to at that stage which is why she soon died.

I hope her story helps more patients to receive justice and not inspire doctors to target us for profit. I have concerns that they are still expiramenting on us. I know I have concerns for my self and my health. Her family needs to be paid. Biomedical companies need to be monitored and regulated to prevent illegal non consensual research. I doctors are not letting cancer grow in or to collect more cells.
JH continues to do great work. I think it is interesting only her cells did this and not other patients.

She goes to a hospital, gets cancer tissue removed, which she didn’t need, the cells get experimented on, by qualified medical professionals, and research is done, not at her expense at all, and thousands of lives are saved. All thru no help or medical insight from her and at no risk or cost to her already failing health, but somehow her grandchildren should get paid?? She didn’t do a single thing, except get cancer cells removed from her body and now her family wants all the money in the world??

no. they usually die within a day or two. hers hasnt died, ever.
Not entirely the case. Cells themselves aren't immortal, they do die like any other cell, but they divide so rapidly that 2 more take its place. They don't stop dividing unlike most cells including cancer cells, most cells can only divide 40 times give or take.

.Her family may not benefit financially from the use of her cells ,but the legacy she leaves behind is worth much more.She had directly or indirectly influenced all our lives and saved many of us .Something we don't realize here is that not a word is being mentioned about the pathologist who noticed the dividing power of the cells and about how useful that could be in medical research.Only her name is immortalized through the name given to those cells.Yes, the cells were used without her consent for those purposes but were most likely collected with her consent for disease diagnosis(of course consent laws and guidelines were not as developed in those years).The problem is with the consent regarding use of her cells which the family now gets a say in.And we also need to understand that the cells were used for the greater good of humanity .And those cells were just cells if it weren't for the research and scientific effort put into making something useful out of them.

I can appreciate your perspective and agree her legacy will be forever remembered, but at the same time that doesn't replace fair compensation.
Both you and I ( Nurse Practitioner) go to work to provide care using our knowledge ( intellectual property) because we want to add value to society, but it still doesn't mean that we don't want to be paid for it. Henrietta's cells are what she had of value in the same way your specialized knowledge is valuable.
As a physician, you can understand Maslow Hierarchy of needs. Its's impossible for her family ( who can't afford healthcare) to turn a blind eye that their physical needs aren't being met and skip to to self- actualization.
Few great things are created in solo, without the pathologist
recoginging the significance of Henrietta's cells, history wouldn't of been made. There is power in Unity. Let's celebrate them both and build a bridge to healing.
