when ever I feel sad, I listen to her, I listen to her kind and strong words, we are all the same but at the same time unique.. she is the mother we all wanted but at same time despise, she understands us too well, we all make mistakes but she forgive us, she is our mother...

She made ordinary words into beauty by knowing how to string them together in a way that only few among the human race can.

Dear Dr. Maya Angelou I was 12 years old the first time I heard your words. Your presence is heavy. You are coated with substance. You helped me find my love for words. And because of that I love you. I am forever indebted.

Oh what a beautiful letter, our mother in love has written us! Proud to call myself your daughter Maya, and today I lost my mother, so my heart grieves your passing, but my mind jealously clasps your very word to its bosom, purring like a cat, I stroke each verse, stretch on every page, rolling around in your paragraphs of wonder, pain and courage. rest embalmed forever in the love of all your daughters, millions upon millions who have, and do will discover your works of magic, your words of distiller wisdom, sublime and ordinary, simple and so finely crafted I hope to be reading you to my very last breath! RIP Maya darling! XxxxX

@stevemtc1... Those students write literature that is real and relevant to them. Poetry is an art form, it has no guidelines or formualas, it's very much personal to the individual. Your favourite musician doesn't advance infrastructure, neither does the person who painted a picture hanging on your wall. Jobs introduced 'art' and 'culture' to technology that already existed, it wasn't complusory, but innovative! Maya's wordly contribution is that on a humanitarian level, far more needed in life

This book is good but at the same time it contradicts her earlier book "Caged Bird" It left me confused and sort of felt lied to. In IKWTCBS she tells of her son's imaculate coneption (metaphorically speaking) and how she wanted to see what sex was... She said she found a random boy she knew while walking down the street if he wanted to have sex and he was shocked and his mouth dropped open, etc... But in this book she says he called her and asked and she said yes after months of him asking her.

@stevemtc1 ahh, she was famous before Oprah actually,
she was a poet during the civil rights movement and
was simply asked to write a book.
She was a fry cook in her teens to support her children...
So what im trying to say is that... Oprah had nothing to do with her being a poet.
and yes, her poetry isn't sophisticated as her peers,
but that's what makes her style so inspiring and interesting.

@stevemtc1 It appears that your problem is with her use of the english language, and not the poetry in itself? The type of poetry she writes is poetry of the heart, soul bearing, and emotional enriching. Her IQ may be low, but thats the beauty of the 'arts', it has no prejudice. She has saved lives, souls, empowered women, human rights, its the basic things that society lacks and needs more of. Instead of building castle in sand and wondering why we self destruct.

@stevemtc1: Writing that "...she aint that smart..." says much about your writing and grammatical skills. The allure of Maya Angelou is the wisdom that she expresses through her writing, which is completely different (and alien to) the deep philosophers that you may prefer. The value of wisdom is greater than intelligence because, it is applied intelligence as opposed to knowledge and theory to no end. If America placed greater value on wisdom we wouldn't have most of our present policy issues.

She is a wonderful person glad she makes the world a better place. If I had to spend the day with her I would be enriched. I would consider it an honor to spend the day with her and cherish the moment opening the door for her and kissing her on the cheek. But, people she aint that smart her poetry is elementary at best. IF YOU THINK OF THIS WOMAN AS A DEEP PHILOSOPHICAL MIND YOUR CRAZY If Oprah hadn't transformed the country in buying into a delusion of emotion MA would be frying potatoes

@shanshanbailey No I have no problem with her English. I have no problem with her. the problem I have is she is elevated as a smart God-like human philosopher when her poetry is only that of the ordinary, at best. She is "Dr" Maya Angelou people as you admit, and I do appreciate that, should not be awarded with advanced degrees. Let her tell me the extremely difficult equations and real break through s as opposed to third grade poetry then we will see whether she is Dr. material

@stevemtc1 wow!!!!! This was a dumb comment,.....you definitely have not heard a great deal of her poetry, and are far from knowing that her accomplishments have been far more than existing as a poet!!!!....Wow,...do your research before you make a comment of this nature,......do your research.

@everyonesnose I may have over-stated the Oprah point but anybody's grandmother can do the same thing there is nothing different than her and yours and my grandmother shes not any smarter or more intellectual than our parents Im sure your grandmother had just as or even better poetry but they weren't made famous because. My 4th cousin should be just as famous he sliced potatoes and put them in a bag it became Lays Potato Chips. Now if you have poetry thats good but hers doesn't rank

As the unskilled populace that you talk about is due to people like you wasting considerable time online. The fact that you posted this at 2am Sunday morning said much about your Saturday night...

For me Steve Jobs is boring!! Art does not have an IQ...art that inspires, lifts you, gives chills does not need to have a high IQ... it comes from the heart! Her word are art...
And just for your info: The thing about IQ tests and scales is that they weren't developed to measure "brilliance". These were tools designed to identify mild to severe deficits in cognitive ability. In that regard, they are very useful, but to try to apply them to the upper range of scores is sort of meaningless.
