Linux user here. I only use Reaper for to record my guitar noodling, but I upgraded to 7 to support the development of this excellent cross-platform application.
Out of a single music related purchase I've made in the past 6 years Reaper is definitely the #1, best purchase in aiding any and all skills as a hobby musician.
That animation on the toolbar feature... 🔥. They still didn't add time stretching to rs5k5000 and yes that's kinda needed I'd say at this point. But great vid. Track lanes was prolly the greatest part of this update.
I've been using Reaper for around 16 years now, and I can say I've hardly customized it at all. Some keyboard shortcuts for actions and re-sizing of tracks, but that's about it really. Even stuck to the default theme. I think it looks great and does everything I need. I'm just a happy customer I suppose 😁
Nice one Jon. When I first started using reaper, I found your videos a little too involved for my personal liking. Now though, you show some incredible stuff and I never stop learning from you. Thanks a million for all your work
An amazing software that has keeps getting better and is so well supported, I am very happy I made the right choice, even though I am a Compleat novice and it can seem to be a bit overwhelming at first, I soon understood it does what I need it to do and you don't need to learn it all at once. So versatile and customisable.
Regarding licensing, I also read in the changelog that REAPER 7 now shows which versions your license is for, so that should hopefully be even clearer from now on.
I was hoping they would add a gain staging knob for every track, so we can keep our sliders at 0dB, and lower every track individually to -18dB. Right now I'm using the Klanghelm VU Meter on each track. I calibrate it to -18dB, and then link the right/left & lower it until it hits 0 on the meter. I'd rather just have a simple knob on each track. I've seen it in another DAW.
instead of klanghelm i use hornet vu-meter mk4. put it on every tracks with auto button on and play one time the loudest part of song. it calculate the right amount of reduction o increase volume, then i adjust the clip gain and remove, or deactivate, the plugin...gain staging is ready
You can use the pre-fx volume envelope for gain staging OR item or take volume. If you want to set all faders to unity after setting an initial balance, try activating volume and trim volume envelopes on all tracks, then apply volume envelopes to trim. This will convert all track volume values to trim volume values and reset your faders to unity.
@@MantasticHams I did create a custom action that opens the FX of the selected track & adds the VU meter at -18dB. It's a special button at the top. I did the same with several other plugins. I'd still like to see a gain staging knob.
I think the art direction of the 7 theme is fantastic, and I love to look at it. But why did they take the numbers off of the gain meters in the MCP? I need those cockos.
Same. I was hoping this video would show a way to turn that back on, because you CAN toggle that on and off in Reaper 6 using the Theme Adjuster. I have not yet taken a look myself to see if you can turn the numbers back on, but if you can’t…then I can’t use this theme. The way I work requires numbers on my mixer strips. :/
So after taking the theme for a spin myself (and reading someone’s exact query of this issue in the forum and seeing White Tie’s response), the answer is ‘no’. For now, we can’t have numbers on the standard size mixer. They only appear if you choose Layout C, and those are the giant sized mixer strips. So, for me, at this point, this theme is a bust. I don’t like the way the master fader strip looks either. Many parts of this look like a slapped together hybrid of themes 4 and 5 but with super hi-res graphics for the HD monitors (I forget what those are called). Default 6 is so focused and clean compared to this. Open a reaper plugin like ReaEQ or ReaComp and look how bad those slider knobs are. I just don’t understand. This is an aesthetic step backwards in my opinion, regardless of the sharpness of the graphics. I understand the Theme Adjuster isn’t finished yet, but why release 7 in this state? I just don’t get it. “But look, track spacers!” 😂 It’s an appreciated addition but I really was looking forward to what we would see with Reaper 7. I’m a bit disappointed here. For now, I can’t use this theme. Once we get the Theme Adjuster and the hopeful possibility of numbers on the mixer meters is an option, then maybe I can use it and have the chance to get used to it, but for now it’s a no. Sticking with Default 6. Love Reaper, and I have nothing bad to say about this incredible software. I just hope this isn’t an indication of some turmoil at the home office, so to speak. I hope this isn’t an indication of future issues to come, that’s all.
Still no option to see the state of the "grid size"? Damn... All my collegues have that 1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 and "Triplets" stupid buttons which "eats" too much space @ Toolbar (((
The cynic in me feels like they released 7 a bit early. We had 5 up to .99 but 6 only up to about .80something. I think they wanted to get some early money in from those who had to upgrade. Not that I'm entirely upset though because I've used Reaper for over a decade now, and I'll keep supporting them for as long as my ears function.
It's nuts that there is so much going into just how we can customize the theme. I mean, if it's ugly, that should encourage people to get in there and make it pretty. Something I haven't found and wonder if it's available is having two meters for a single track (peak/RMS) like we do for the master or and Input and Output meter?
Has anyone had a problem with Reaper hanging while loading the DAW at start up? This only started for me once I upgraded to version 7. If I resort back to version 6 (Options/Themes/Default_6.0) the DAW loads up instantly without hanging. Seems like I wasn't able to find an answer in the Reaper forms.
I have an old theme that supports both faders and horizontal meter bars below the fader in the track layout. I would like to see that available as an option in the theme adjuster. I rarely use the mixer panel anymore and do most of my mixing in the track layout menu. I really find the short vertical meters on tracks useless. I'm also an older user and have vision issues and I would love to see the ability to change font size in the menus. Even on high res monitors I have trouble with the menu fonts. I do a lot of live recording of large ensembles that involve a lot of mics, really like the spacers and the gain reduction function.
I agree. I liked the default 6 theme and used it until ReaperTips came along, which was just enough of a tweak to make things a little smoother. default 7 seems not quite fully realized.
@@Xlornick I wrote my impressions about the default theme on Cockos forum. Of course it's my opinion, not the universal law. But because I followed it from the beginning, to see almost anything on what it was proposed to include, making the Default not even a viable solution, it's detrimental for Reaper and for our work as well. Yes ReaTips is really great. I would like to have (if possible) a couple of features more to get it 7th(ish) ☺as well
