  • Mérida Mexico is the city I have chosen to call home in the beginning stages of my retirement. Admittedly I do have some fears about moving to Mérida. I have already bought a house in Mérida Mexico so my soon to be retirement casa will be ready for me. For that much I am thankful and excited. There is a lot to know when buying a house in Mérida or renting a house in Mérida. Please subscribe and turn on the notifications to follow my journey. I hope this inspires you to pursue your dream of moving to Mexico, fears and all. It will be worth it!

Hola Amy! Great insights. I beleive that all of us Northern Americans, particularly those of us who grew up in the US, have at least a touch of ADHD. It's most likely due to the environmental issues that include the elements of highly processed foods and even the plastics and everday chemicals that we've regularly been exposed to and have permeated our lives since the early sixties not to mention the frenetic lifestyle most people tend to live.....I have been remote beach camping, surfing, diving and fishing throughout mostly Baja Mexico since the early eighties. Years ago I fell in love with the family culture, food and the warm friendliness of the Mexican people. I knew full well what I was getting myself into when I was able to retire early and move to Ensenada a few years ago after growing up and attending college in FL and then living in the LA/Ventura area of CA for most of my life. Best thing I've ever done for myself! This area has a Meditterranean type of microclimate that is never too hot and never too cold making it a great place to produdce wine let alone to live. A little less than 30 miles from me is Valla de Guadalupe, or the Ruta del Vino where 90% of the wine in Mexico is produced and boasts over 150 wineries along with numerous restuarants headlining World famous chefs and cuisine. Because the ocean is cool to cold here it keeps the air temeratures perfect year round. You don't need a/c but you do need heat for the always cool nights so your electruc bill is between $7 to $15.00us per month depending on how how cool it gets at night. There are no bugs or mosquitoes to speak of and you can actually wear clothes here that includes long sleeves and jeans and getting "dressed up" for when you bop around the city for a night out on the town. You need to keep a hoody handy even in the warmest summer months. Two days ago it was the warmest it's been all year at a sunny 77 and 66 at night. BTW-Only boring people get bored and there are really only three ages in life, Teenage, Middle Age and "Hey, you look good!!".... Amy If you are ever in town look me up on FB. I'll show you around and treat you to a delicious seafood lunch at "La Guerrerense" and a walk along the malecon. That's the food stand made famous by Anthony Bourdain that he called the best in the World! Mucha suerte desde la hermosa Ensenada!🤷‍♂😎🏄🍯

Hi David, what a delight to read your comments. I agree that the frenzy lifestyle adds to the (perceived) ADHD. Maybe I just need a beach and a brew. I am super excited to check out wine county in MX. Good job that you realized Baja was for you at an early age-bien hecho!

Make sure you can handle the Heat, it's not just Hot it's Extremely Hot and I grew up in a part of Texas that's over 100 and humid throughout the summer. Merida weather in the summer makes Texas weather feel like a cool Spring.

@@DestinationRetirement It's brutal most of the year, during the day. But evenings begin to cool down in June which makes a big difference, at least relative to Spring. Also the cooling effect from the afternoon rain in summer helps. The rain brings a drop in temperature for sure but more importantly and more noticably the rain cools your house, I mean the actual house, the block. There isn't soil here, it's a concrete jungle built on limestone, so rain cooling all vertical and horizontal surfaces reduces the radiant heat which is the real issue. There is more to the heat and how to deal with it than meets the eye.

We had no plan and moved to Mexico. However, we're both in our 30s, fluent in spanish and have online businesses so that obviously helps. Amanda's biggest fear was not being near family but they are a short plane ride away. Some of our favorite expat UA-camrs near our area are actually doing real estate videos and it's working for them so maybe you reinvent your career in a super fun way :)

Not Knowing Spanish is my number one fear. I have tried learning and it takes a LOT for me to remember phrases. I work with lots of hispanic people and have learned some basic phrases related to my work, but to get out and travel, not so much. I have Rocket Spanish and other YT freebies but it's SO DAMN BORING to just sit and listen and do those things. I need to be immersed and forced to use it. I spent 10 days in Panama and LOVED it but was with a tour group for most of it and did not have to worry about the language barrier. Number 2 is boredom. I work 40 plus hours a week. I am in healthcare and I know there are no jobs for me in Mexico or any other LATAM country. I have had short periods of time of not working over the years, mostly from FMLA. The most recent, in 2021, I decided to take some time off to see if I wanted to change careers or just not work at all. A 'mini' retirement. OMG I was bored to tears. I visited every single family member, friend and place in my hometown and then some. I took up drawing and painting. It turns out I do not have enough hobbies to keep me busy and my left brain is nuts without some stimulation of the work kind. (I do MRIs). So although I would LOVE to retire somewhere like Mexico or Panama, I do not know how long it would last in one place. My question to you is why Merida? It's got to be one of the hottest places in Mexico. Just curious. I live in SW Florida and know the heat very well. Unless I had a pool, I would not live in this environment 365 days a year.

Try duolingo just to get started, to build some confidence. Do like 5 lessons a day for a few weeks. It's free to try. (I actually prefer the free version because it forces me to practice to earn hearts to finish my lessons when I mess up).

Most people who choose Merida are focusing on safety, but there are other places in Mexico that are "safe", like Queretaro, where the weather is perfect, it never gets boiling hot like in Merida.
Try to learn Spanish from Spain, which is neutral Spanish. That way, if you go to Mexico, or Panama, or any other Spanish speaking country, you'll be fine. If you learn Spanish from Mexico, you'll learn many expressions and some words that are only used in Mexico. The same thing happens with Panama and the rest of latam.

Hi Annie, Love your comment! Language is so hard to learn when you are not conversing with someone who speaks it natively. When I lived in MX in the 90's it was a teeny town and very few people spoke English. I remember learning the word for chicken breast by pointing at my boob when asking the woman chopping up the chicken. That word stuck after that. ;). Maybe take a trip to a place like Mérida or other city of interest and book your air bnb just far enough outside of the Centro area to be in a neighborhood where there are fewer English speakers.
I hear you on the boredom factor. I like Mérida because it is a big city without being ginormous. I'm pretty sure I can keep myself busy. Funny, I've taken up painting and pottery is high on my list. ;) Thank you for your comment!

Mexico City is observed with increased pollution levels due to a lack of strong winds in high temperatures months. Mexican people are empathetic towards those with allergy-related coughs as a result of the air quality.

Ideally, you will want to go to Cancun or Playa del Carmen during March, April, and May. Those three months where the temperature is above 100 degrees are brutal. Try to learn Spanish from Spain, so if you ever go to another Spanish speaking country, you'll have no problem (Mexican Spanish is not exactly the same as proper Spanish from Spain).
Best of luck, find activities to do in Merida, and you will never get bored.

You will make friends easily. ❤ Your achy joints is due to a diet too high in animal protein. This happens to westerners commonly in their 50s. American meat is so poisoned with bovine growth hormones that it really exasperates the issue. Cut meat down to two dinners a week and watch it go away sugar bear.

Something to explore for sure. I try to source from the right places but in a pinch, and due to working long hours, sometimes we just pop in the grocery store for meat. We have fabulous butchers here it just takes discipline on my part to make the drive. (we live in a very small town). I'm going to make note of your suggestion and give it more effort. Thank you!

    Buenos Dias!
I'm a 71-year old Boomer that is slow-traveling Latin America for six months in the northern hemisphere and six months in the southern hemisphere until My expiration date.
At the end of September, I expect to be in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
    Why Latin America?
Because, I'm fascinated by Latin American culture, cuisine, and history. And, because I'm lazy and only want to learn one language, other than American version of English, which I speak fluently with a southern dialect.
Currently, I'm in Centro, Merida, Yucatan.
After reading about the Mayan culture and watching expat videos about Centro, Merida, I became interested. However, they all warned about Yucatán's killer heat.
I'm and old farmer/nurseryman/house flipper from West Central, Georgia. How hot can it be?
This past mid-May to mid-June, I stayed in Centro, Merida for 21 straight days. The daytime temperature never dropped below 42°c. Folks said this year was much hotter than normal.
Significant, but not unmanageable. Just adjust your daily schedule to do your appointments and shopping before 10AM, then siesta until 7PM when the party begins and can go past 2AM mañana.
I like Centro, Merida for it's arts, and culture, cuisine and people-watching. Fascinating!
Plus, if your ankles and knees are up to it, Centro is walkable, just watch your step on uneven, broken, sidewalks that are slippery when damp. Yesterday, walking back from the market, I did a "Biden" when I took a mistep on a wet curb.
Which is another reason I like Centro, Merida. Any destination farther away than a half mile, I'll take the bus or Uber. A round trip from Centro to Progreso Beach is a whopping 52 pesos on an air-conditioned, comfortable bus.
If I can figure out the schedules, I may venture on the Tren Maya to Cancun for the experience.
The hardest part of My day is researching TripAdvisor and UA-cam for recommendations of which events and tours to checkout, or which of the dozens of restaurants to dine that evening.
    Take care!
    -Hobo Nomad

Hello Hobo! I love Buenos Aires. How wonderful that you get to spend some time there. What? No third language to add to your repertoire? I get it. I am comfortable in Spanish and between that and English there are a lot of places to travel to. Glad you found the heat agreeable. Yes, there are so many good restaurants to choose from. Well i hope you can tolerate extreme heat. Its wearing. I dont like that you dont own property outright, have to pay fees to notary to hold it for you. I take crossing the street very seriously in town that's for sure. Very fast drivers. And, I also like that the beaches are less than 30 min away and not as touristy as the Cancun coast. Paying 550usd a year is the only upkeep cost on the fideicomiso. I am comfortable with that after long talks with the attorney. As for the heat, time will tell. I do have lots of summer travel planned. :). Thank you for commenting!
