Great video. I just pick up a 99 at auction. I used your video to explain the AA sights to my kids.....you being much more articulate than I. They enjoyed the Lucas Films quality sound effects. Keep up the great work
I've always wondered how the AA sights were supposed to work, thanks. FWIW:Robert Scott, in his famous "God is My CoPilot," describes strafing a company of Japanese infantry marching along a road in China. Instead of scattering for cover, they maintained formation and fired their rifles at his P40. They were slaughtered, of course, when he turned his .50 cal Brownings on them. But high marks for discipline, right?
It is quite possible for small arms to harm helicopters. Granted, US troops with 5.56mm vermin guns probably have less of a chance of harming them than if you had, say, an L1A1, but massed fire from a platoon of men could definitely damage/destroy a helicopter, especially a transport. I've got an article on hand in a British military training magazine from the '80s that specifically mentions massing small arms fire against helicopters - though it did not that since friendly helicopters can appear without warning you shouldn't shoot them unless you have positive confirmation they are hostile. Perhaps that is why you were never told to shoot at a helicopter?
R4V3-0N Why? It seems like the obvious thing to do with a weapon like that against an enemy like that, even if it didn't have an air bursting function.
A non zero amount of fighter pilots have been owned with .30cal rifle bullets from the ground. Granted these are usually machine guns but its kind of a "Why not" feature. Especially in the era of biplanes. My bolt action rifle has a very similar feature in its ACSS sight, where the normal range ladder also has a sideways portion, for "normal speed of a person running sideways with a rifle". Again, a "why not?" feature.
Hehe. Good workup and lesson on what and why. Thanks for posting. Arisaka wasn't the only rifle with AA sights standard, but I commend the accuracy of your 1st demonstration shootist. One shot; one kill. Ahhhh . . . shooting bliss. No wonder Yamato Damashii was so formidable. The fact that France and Japan, both--not to mention Italy, were burdened by major ammunition changes in the thirties and the war period cannot have helped matters any for their respective armies. Germany was no wiser, spending a great deal of effort to field the new "Kurz' cartridge for the revolutionary "MaschinenPistole" 43 and "Sturmgewehr" 44. That so many nations--and especially Germany--were changing cartridges at such an awkward passage seems incredible, considering international tensions of the times. Changing cartridges means making nugatory years of industrial effort (another term for it might be "strategic materiel reserves") by letting the old caliber or size rotting away in armories, while troops at the front are starved by insufficient supply of the new rounds. One is left with the notion that the only person who knew Germany was soon going to war was Hitler, himself. The same applies to Japan and its august emperor in my view. Sure, it was one thing to introduce weapons, calibers, and standards of issue, while engaged in low intensity warfare in China and Mongolia, but an entirely different kettle of ammo starved fish to do so when your planners know you'll be going into Total War against the USA and Australia/UK soon. A bon mot is called for here . . . how about: "Life is what happens while you're busy making plans"?
God i love rising storm. You should give Verdun a try since you're covering the weapons of WW1 :D. It doesn't handle as well as RS but is still pretty good on it own merits in my opinion.
I dunno why but the blatant disregard for individual soldiers when it comes to expectations hilarious. "Here Private Sano, go shoot that Mustang with this rifle without a scope hoping to somehow shoot the pilot if you're lucky. Good luck!"
+Disappointed by Humanity Exactly. But the only experience and data available was that which was gleaned from WWI. It's another example of the expression "prepared to fight the LAST war.
@@Rickinsf Going off of what Othais said in the video, no, they had not, "prepared to fight the LAST war," but was an add on to help them fight their then CURRENT war in China. Issues arose because they found themselves involved in another war concurrent to the one they had adopted AA volley sights for.
+C&Rsenal I'm looking for the best steel, sights, trigger, etc. I would imagine (maybe way of base) that early variants would have had better QC/machine work? I try to work up the most accurate load I can find for my milsurp rifles and just enjoy the process when I have a good rifle to work with. Does that make sense?
Is point blanc 300 meters for the 7.7 Arisaka round? (Point blanc is that place when the barrel of rifle is parallel to ground that the bullet begins to significantly drop.)
+diasirea The gun is sighted to 300 meters but I'm not sure if that means it is absolutely the top of point blank. I'd imagine it's actually somewhere in the middle of the rise. Logically that would give the longest "on target" range.
Some military bolt action rifles had battle sights set to 300m with idea that solder could do a torso shot, so likely being in middle of rise would be the desirable point.
Great vid, Rising Storm kicks ass, can't wait for the Vietnam game to come out! Get me that SKS-45, AKM, and dare I say, maybe an SVD-63? Pretty please? :) Oh and the M16A1 should be neat as well, but seriously, mmph gimme them Soviet firearms!
So if the sight is zeroed at 300 meters. What kind of rounds did they shoot in it. I can get 150 gr and 174gr bullets from hornady. What will I be looking at 100 meters and 200?
I don't really get how the sight picture works. Like, you raise the barrel, but wouldn't that raise the sight picture above what you're looking at? If it's far away, wouldn't the same happen?
+No Free Will You raise the barrel in relation to the rear sight, so if you drawn a line from your eye to the most "up" point on the front sight it will create a line towards the target, a line no longer parallel to the bore.
Mausers had sight graduation numbers on both sides of the sight slide (on early models, dropped later to speed production) so that a soldier lying prone could set his sight to the desired range without exposing himself to enemy fire.
Terran Marines before Starcraft came out in 1998. No honestly,I can see why the developers would use this rifle as a reference for why a guy in a space suit with a rifle that fires spikes at a hypersonic speed would be able to kill air units.
Maybe a dumb question but if the sight is set at a closest distance of 300m, can you see someone kneeling or laying down on the ground at say 100m or 50m? Or is your target then hidden.
i agree about rising storm. I also wish theyd make the nambu as unreliable as it truly was, lots of raging sls and tls when they accidentally shoot themselves :p
Well done and easy to understand. There is a little historical mistake, the Arisaka Type 99 was mainly designed for the battle with US and UK, not for the Chinese army. Also, I saw the bullet head of Hanyang Type88 rifle is point not round in your webpage's animation. Anyway, your video is quite well and vivid. I hope to see more rifles, pistols, such as, Arisaka 38, Mosin Nagant ...
+Green tangle Thanks for the compliments! The old HY88 animation was actually the first test piece so less effort was put into detail. From Banzai's Type 99 research the cartridge and there updated 38 actually dates back to studies from the Russo Japanese war that the 6.5 wasnt wounding enough to take opponents off the battlefield for more than a short while, unless it was a fatal hit. The final catalyst doesn't appear to be recorded but I think it most likely in response to combat experience on dense wood and jungle.
I really wonder how many times a Japanese soldier actually hit a moving plane with one of these rifles. I'd be pretty surprised if it was more than a dozen. And I'd be shocked if more than 2 or 3 were actually shot down by rifle fire.
You'll probably find this funny, i just replaced my anti aircraft sight because mine were missing. I paid $125 for the original part. I installed it. The way it came. I noticed something was not right. So i watching this and yep, it's on backwards lol. The ladder is right but the wings with the peephole is on backwards, seller put it on that way. Gonna fix it now.
Ha I like the BANG sound effects
Tyler boom boom!

I’d love to have anti air volley sights as my back up iron sights for my AR for drone hunting.
yeah Rising storm + red orchestra is soooooooooooo awesome

Rising Storm mention's made me like this video even more. Rising Storm 2 HYPE!
+Demonhorse1 s'good game.
When i aim with the arisaka 99, it shows that the iron sight is a trapezoid, and not a circle. Any information on this???????
Very cool! A great explanation why things are not as obviously stupid as they may seem.
+LeftThumbBreak There is always a reason with stuff like this. Sometimes the reasoning turns out wrong or times change. But there WAS a reason!
Best sound effects ever!
Love that you play Rising Storm AND Verdun, my two favorite games. You are awesome.
I can't believe the quality of this video. I was just searching for how the sights looked.
Cool explanation. It's interesting how often an idea seems great - only to be made outdated so quickly.
really cool explanation

Rising Storm is amazing.
fantastic video, very well done.
Wow. A blast from the past
I just got one of these and I think this may be my new favorite rifle.
Incredible, complete, superb video
I hope you are able to make this a regular thing awesome
That is the hope. We're experimenting with bite-size chunks, working up to bigger.
This is fantastic, have you ever considered doing a weekly show?
Good video a always wondered why the type 99 had those sights.
Just bought one of these from your store today. Ya'll rock
The print?
No an Arisaka type 99. You guys had several and I snagged one :)
I own this weapon. Thank you for explaining.
You are awesome.
no you
You all are =) Yeah, a bit late after 6 Years.
Funny how these never ended up on cold war rifles after helicopters became prevalent.
***** Helicopters get shot at by ground troops as a standard tactic. The idea is to hurt the crew or passengers. And they succeed fairly often.
***** Incidents of helicopters being shot by small arms have made international news. It shouldn't be hard for you to do a quick search.
It is quite possible for small arms to harm helicopters. TBH I am still laughing at how someone used an out dated RPG to shoot down a Blackhawk a few decades ago.

Superb video.
I could imagine the Type 99 being useful for shooting down drones thanks to that anti-aircraft sight.
The wings would be too long since ce drones fly at low speed
Slick style. Thanks from Texas.
I had a feeling that you would've mentioned Rising Storm
1:07 Well that's a clever idea.
+RonJohn63 and a byproduct of grinding out the sight notch anyway!
Nice video, thanks!
Best sound effects ever!😂👍👍
Ha! What a find. Three minutes and twenty one secounds of Type 99 details from Othias

+C&Rsenal literally just got to the end of the Mauser 1914 video talking about the server lol.
Brody Davis ..... I heard C&Rsenal has the full list of upcoming guns straight from Blackmill....
Lol i was waiting for you to say something about RS
I dunno why but the blatant disregard for individual soldiers when it comes to expectations hilarious.

if it were a little less blatant itd be tragic. at this point its just absurd

Speaking of Rising Storm, I wish they'd add the dust cover.
+Kadesman it irks me too!
10/10 sound design
I feel like these could have been more useful in world war one or the interwar years though.

So the Sights were meant more for WW1 aircraft. That type of sight was just 20 years out of date.
Nice animations :)
I am a reloader and avid shooter of Milsurps, but never owned an Arisaka. If I can find one with a strong bore which model would best suit my needs?

Feels like they might make a comback for use against loitering munitions and the like, as those things fly low and slow.
red orchestra 2/rising storm is an awesome game
2:30 what is that beautiful aircraft ?

NVA practiced the volley fire rifle tactic not sure if it helped, other than as a stress relief to the bombed.
What is the name of the plane at 2:29?
Northrop C-19 Alpha

What game was it in the last few seconds?
Will there by a full primer o the Type 99?
Was there any known instance when a plane was actually shot down with these sights?
+richard343s I know of no confirmed hits
How do you use the arisaka antiaircraft sight in Rising storm?
thanks alot. my mauser m 48 also have the numbers at back of the rear sight. what are they for???thanks

The 99 costed 100 yen. The 38 only costed 80 yen.
They should have just issued out the t38 carbine with chrome lining.
Like conscripts would learn this.
The airplane sounds like old motor boat motor.😅
right
But.. that was Medal of Honor Pacific Assault, not Rising sun.
They should put AA sights on modern assault rifles
BANG
but still can be used against drones
