Looks like this video gets the honour of being the 100th on my channel! Thanks for always tuning in week after week everyone - to say this whole UA-cam experience has been life changing would be an understatement. 😊 We’re coming up on Slugger’s 2nd Birthday, and boy oh boy do I have a big video planned for it! 😅
I never tought someone childish and innocent like Babloo would whip animals to force them to do his will, that's kinda dark, even at the mark this set was made.
The normal way you use whips in animal handling is to whip the air _near_ the animal, using the snapping sound itself as a signal. Probably not ideal for an elephant, but it works well for teams of dogs and horses.
LEGO's bio for the detective collectible minifigure credits him with solving "the Sam Sinister Switcheroo", so there's definitely a case of stolen identity! I suspect Baron von Baron had a hand in the disappearance of Slyboots (the original Sam Sinister) and has stolen his identity for some nefarious scheme. We even see a transitional Sinister in the The Lost Treasure of Ancient Greece web game, where von Baron is sporting Slyboots' top hat but hasn't yet adopted the black suit, still wearing his original tan outfit.
The classic LEGO elephant is probably among the best animals the company has ever made. While the inclusion of the whip is unpleasant it can be remedied by placing a carrot in the loop at the end of the piece, like he’s luring the elephant along. It’s good that kids don’t see that sort of thing in their toys now.
i think the inclusion of the article and sources about mistreated animals was very informative! i think this channel is slowly becoming of my of my favorite lego channels
The rare parts portions are some of my favorite _parts_ of these videos. 6:00, that red lance is surprisingly cheap, the brown ones can be expensive. People are harvesting those poor elephants and selling their body parts online and throwing the lances in the bulk bin, even more DARK HISTORY for this set hehehe.
A possible alternative to the whip being an instrument of elephant abuse, is that it is an anti-snake addition. Wonderful video as always, from a set series that passed me by.
when I was a kid, I remember seeing a teaser image for Orient Expedition right before Christmas. I told my dad, "these are what I want. I don't even know what sets they will have, but I want the new Johnny Thunder sets." Christmas morning, I got my first look at both the Elephant Caravan and Scorpion Palace while I was unwrapping them. It was a good Christmas.
Yeah, I know some fans might scream "juniorization" at the blocky animal pieces, but honestly Lego did a great job in showing how versatile they were as the same parts were used in Dino, Alpha Team, and even Star Wars. Nowadays all of the Jurassic World dinos have specific torsos that aren't really useful for any other creature.
Don't worry about taking a while making these, the quality and research really shows. Every time I see a new Slugger video it makes my day better and they never disappoint. Shame this set is rare because I like it a lot and I think I feel the same as you about the whip lol. It's kind of cool that the smiling Babloo actually isn't such a good kid after all, it makes the whole thing a bit more complex and interesting. I like Pippin Reed and how she's travelling by herself knowing these adventures are dangerous. As for the car I kind of like how it's such a simple and basic build though of course it begs to be customized and you did a good job updating it
I didn't have many Lego sets as a kid but that set at 1:14 I distinctly remember all those little pieces like the camera, spiderweb, and those printed panels. I just got hit with a wave of nostalgia.
I’d probably cough up the whip to conveyance and general ignorance here lol. In the west a whip is a common short hand for animal training/riding, so I doubt the abuse of elephants was intentional here. Babloo is a good boy I like to think! Speaking of him, his torso print has proven super useful for me as I have used quite a few of them in the past for Ottoman-esque pirates on account of the colorful vest and trimmings it has. I said before one of my favorite things about Orient Expedition was the flexibility it introduces to abstracting Asian cultures into other themes and this was exactly the one I had in mind lol
I agree - likely not intentional, just ignorance on the part of the set designers. 👍 And I’m with you on the torso prints - they’re fantastic and so many are sadly set exclusive! 😭
@@RRSlugger the articulation of the animal in the video blew my mind!! As I have young kids playability is now a key consideration in the sets I acquire. That clip alone made me want the set!
Without question the best elephant Lego ever made. I wish they would have continued using this body type for more large animals. I always thought Lego should have used this body for a new dragon with a head mold modeled after the classic castle dragon. It could have been included with new knights sets with the realization that up until that point minifigs had only encountered baby dragons and now here was momma!
Love the MGS2 reference! Maybe if they did another wave of adventurers Sam would’ve made a system to shut down the thousands of guns Johnny and his team have? Anyway, can’t wait for the scorpion palace! Always one that interested me
I remember being a kid and looking through catalogs at this set. I wanted the elephant so badly. It's still a set I have yet to pick up for my collection.
Maybe the whip is more used as a guide like reigns? Tbh this is why I wish Lego did modern versions of these themes, proper research is much more accessible now
I rebuilt the scorpion palace last month. There were a few pieces missing but I was able to rebuild it in its entirety. What a joy! He always reminded me of Pankot’s palace. Sinister is a really charismatic lego villain
My mom won this set in some competition, so I've had it since I was little. It still stands proudly on display with the scorpion palace (albeit missing a couple pieces) and reminds me of my love for Adventurers. I really hope one day I can celebrate this theme by a proper stop motion. Btw, Sinister's face seems oddly similar to Johnny. "I'm your father" much?
This is such a great model for display - probably one of the few that I’d say works better for that than it does for play, personally. 😊 You’ve got both kinds of elephants there too, it sounds like! ❤️
This is one of the sets that left the biggest impression on me from my childhood, and the elephant is still excellent, especially if you want to use it for circus themed dioramas or war mocs.
5:30 I think the inclusion of a whip is a GOOD thing all things considered. An elephant goad is a combination of a hook and a spear which is used as a weapon by mahouts to hurt and scare elephants. It is literally used to jab at the elephant at its most vulnerable areas to make it obey. A bullwhip included in the set would still hurt but would deal significantly less severe damage to the elephant thanks to its thick hide. Plus the cracking of the whip alone can be used to give out audio signals and commands to an elephant. One crack for stop and go, two for kneel, and so on.
That’s a fair point - I wasn’t able to find much about *how* an elephant goad is actually used when I was looking into it. It sounds horrible though. ☹️
I caught that Top Gear reference! Very funny! Congratulations on 100 videos! I really love that the transparent LEGO stud on the camera has the "LEGO" molding on it oriented horizontally; I call that "graining" my pieces so that all the molding faces the same way! It's difficult in some sets, and most of the time, I have to pick 2 directions instead of just 1, and it makes me feel crazy sometimes, but it's fun determining which way should be the "front"! What a nice elephant, as well! This set seems rather lovely. I'd love to see that elephant mold again! Thanks for another fabulous video from R. R. Slugger! ...or should it be O. E. Slugger for this series?
I never used to care about lining up studs or hiding mould injection points until I started doing LEGO photography, haha. Pointing a camera at something reveals all its imperfections. 😅 Now it’s become force of habit whenever I build something, haha.
Gaslighting the Baron.. or Sam Sinister.. either way, brilliant. I love it. Good observation on the camera(s), too. I got this set a few years ago but had no idea how many exclusive parts it contained. I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about these sets in general but man, you take it to another level!
I think that with the villain names, it could be like what Lex Luthor said in LEGO Batman 2, "Robin's still around; if we eliminate Batman, he'll put on the suit and say he's Batman." It could simply be a title passed on. The camera could be a BB or press camera, which Fabuland has a part for. That whip might have been put in for lack of a better part, though like you said that pole worked just as well.
Every time I hear you say "Set exclusive" my heart sinks a little bit, lol. I have this set in my Adventurers collection, but it's tucked away at my childhood home and I have no idea what the condition is. I hope all the parts are still intact when I eventually retrieve it!
I stumbled upon this set in my cousin’s attic when I was 8 years old. They had lost interest in legos so they let me keep it, and thus began my love for Adventurers despite the theme being retired for years at that point. The Orient Expedition webcomics were still available on the official Lego website at the time, so I was able to experience the characters and see how the caravan fit into the story. Good times
This a great set! I picked it up, NIB, for $10 at a flea market a year or two after the line had be discontinued. I was most excited for the elephant, but was pleasantly surprised how neat the rest of the build turn out to be.
I managed to get my hands on this set new and sealed for a very decent price. Now it costs at least 100 bucks. I felt really bad opening it, making the other sealed sets even more pricey, but I didn't buy it just to have it stuck in its box the whole time. I'll take good care of it! The elephant is indeed a really cool lego animal. It's a shame they only ever made 2 sets with them. You'd think they could show up in a Lego City set, in a Zoo or something. Actually, now that I research it, I don't think there has ever been a Lego Zoo set! Plenty of Duplo ones, but not Lego! Weird...
Congrats on the big 100, Slugger! Can't get enough of this series! 😺 The whip did irk me at first glance, too, so I find it very nice that you brought it up. The pole idea is a nicer alternative. I'd imagine it's probably not hard to find animals other than humans being treated poorly in toy lines of many different years, unfortunately, but hopefully as time goes on the level of awareness and respect for species other than one's own will increase. Others aren't objects. Also suuuuper excited to see the board/card game in action! I love card games. This is making me want to see if I can dig up my old Bionicle board game... I'm pretty sure it's gone, but at least there's the digital version I heard people had put together a little while back!
Oof, "use the whip to pass the skill test and ride the elephant!"...maybe he just used it to climb up on top? "A petition was delivered to the Lego City Council to re-designate the holiday on April 9th from 'Be Kind To Babloo Day' to 'Be Kind To Elephants Day' after an examination of the historical record revealed the guide to the Thunder Expedition in India was notably cruel to his elephants, even relative to practices of the day. The discovery was made as part of the larger effort by the Charles Lightning Historical Society to re-contextualize the work of its namesake and his colleagues as calls mount to repatriate the Re-Gou Ruby, Sun Disk, and other artifacts 'discovered' by the so-called 'Adventurers'..."
Oh cool, Fire, Water, Stone, Air, and Earth Jalopies. Cool! Also, Great video. I personally never had this set, as it never really interested me. But good to see it covered here. Rockatoa, Brickticks out!
I'm always surprised by how many odd sets you show to example your thoughts, like these old dolls xd mind showing your collection in a video, some day? It'd be interesting to see how you store, how you sort, where; etc. It may even help to preserve these older lego sets in perfect condition like you do!
I actually just picked up another odd Scala set - hopefully I’ll get to those this summer! In terms of preserving LEGO, I find that keeping it stored away rather than displaying on a shelf keeps the dust and sun away from it. It’s what helps these sets look their best each video. 😊
I remember my friend got this at one of his birthday parties when we were kids and I was super jealous. Oddly enough, he got the Exo Force Iron Condor at the same party which meant it was at least 2007, interesting this set was still on shelves.
Oh yes the legendary set with the best elephant lego has ever made... Also at @7:27 I saw Tractor. Which brings me to the last and final question... W H E R E I S T H E C R A N E ?!?!!?!!?!!
Me at 3:20 -oh we love the little babloo so much, happy babloo day!! Me at 5:30 - oh babloo? We hate that guy, just the worst, hope we never see him again
1:54 Slugger's single shots can crack me up more than any commentary ever could xD edit _ooof_ the only connection between the elephant and carriage is via cloth? yuccccccck, that's vicious
Oh... my... god... Now that's a blast fron the past for me. I had this set. I still do, but i have to find it first. 😅 I had no clue some of its parts are rare 😮
This is my favorite set of the theme! You can’t beat the dark gray elephant. Tho the eyes on the newer city version are better, I prefer the poseability in this one. The cloth piece is just perfect and makes the elephant pop. 3 slugs for me!
I have this creepy head-canon for the Sam Sinister thing, in the alt builds for the Oasis Ambush it shows a skeleton chained to a palm tree with Sam Sinister's hat on it. I always imagined the Baron being the lackey between them and that Sam Sinister also had a way more famous reputation, but that "Sam Sinister" never left Egypt. Jonny tied him up figuring the location was marked on the map and The Baron would need to pass it and find him, and he did but then Baron Von Barron just decided to leave him there. Then over time slowly went crazy over the entire thing adopting Sam Sinister's visage and personality more and more.
Before the Dino Attack and Jurassic World molds, I used to find it hilarious that the Lego elephant was so much bigger than the dinosaurs on Dino Island (and basically the same size as the 2001 dinosaurs) 😂
I had every set from the India wave of Orient Expedition, though most of them I didn't obtain until the end of 2007. Personally, I've never heard of evidence of this set being retail-exclusive in certain regions. At 6:12, the Mata brown parts connecting the element to the cart also came in the "Wright Flyer" (10124) released in July of 2003, but nowhere else. In addition, while the turban in Mata red is exclusive to this set, the part as a whole first appeared in "bright violet" in a Harry Potter set (4702) in September 2001, where it was used for Professor Quirrius Quirrel's headgear. The neck part on the elephant also first appeared as part of a Spinosaurus in a Studios set (1371) four months before.
Shortly before you started this retrospective series I had a memory trigger when I was looking at Orient Expedition sets and remembered seeing the Adventurers clock in the Lego store when I was little. It'll be awesome to finally see how those Lego theme clocks worked, can't wait for that video.
I think my favourite part about this channel is the coverage of the most obscure lego sets. Idk how well this one fits that description, but I've never heard of it until now.
0:49 in the german radio play for the first adventurer series, the left dude already was the bad boss and went by the name Mr. Hates :)) the guy that is dressed all black was his henchman Sly Boots. I thought Sam Sinister left him behind in egypt for failing him on his hunt for the ruby. Thinking about it ... Johnny Thunder and the gang did not meet Sam Sinister on their Amazonas expedition. ...maybe Sly was "taken care of" by Sam's sister before she decided to watch over Sam herself on the dino island expedition to assure that her little brother wont waste all of the family money on yet another failed expedition ;D and in the meantime Sam just grew a beard and went for an overall darker outfit ... maybe his old school goth sister even made him wear black xD ... i kinda like this idea ^^
I must admit I'm a big fan of how that car looks, although I'm yet to see in person since this is the last India set I've still to buy. Light grey and black is one of my favourite colour schemes believe it or not, and the yellow accents only enhance the look
Perhaps it contradicts Lego's M.O of creative play, but I think my favorite part of these old themes is when the sets tell the story in a specific order, if that makes sense. Like how the Agents sets were titled as numbered missions
Those old elephants are undoubtedly the best Lego has ever made. I wish they’d held on to the molds a little longer to include in a Temple of Doom set, but alas, the elephants shall remain extremely scarce, not unlike the real ones
On the Sam Sinister problem, my personal theory is that the baron killed Sam Sinister and took his place, that's why he's wearing black clothes, a black hat and a goatee
Your passion and dedication to share what makes these models special to you are an incredible inspiration. Keep on riding, man! I'll be glad to stick around for the rest of the ride!
I think everyone has their own take on the villain names, but mine is that the hook handed, monocle wearing baddie has always been Sam Sinister, and his cohort throughout Egypt is Slyboots
I heard somewhere that barron killed sinister and took up his identity as in the haunted house set there are multiple references to adventures which include a skeleton with a top hat
Looks like this video gets the honour of being the 100th on my channel! Thanks for always tuning in week after week everyone - to say this whole UA-cam experience has been life changing would be an understatement. 😊

Classic Babloo, always subverting expectations
better then equiping him with an elephant goad tbh ;D those things are quite vicious tools ^^

Truly great work. Long may it continue 👏🏼
Pippin's camera isn't necessarily anachronistic, several 1920's cameras like Kodak's No.2 and various Eastman cameras took that basic form.
It’s true - she must have just been on the bleeding edge of photograph technology back then, which makes sense as a journalist! 😊

Hahaha, I love this! ❤️
Every slugger upload makes my day brighter
This was one of my favorite sets as a kid
MGS reference? This man has the KNOWNLEDGE, have my like XD
Back when LEGO sets had a shelf life measured in years, rather than the months or weeks even of sets today! 😭
One of my first lego sets. Good old times
Oh yes the legendary set with the best elephant lego has ever made...
Also at @7:27 I saw Tractor.
Which brings me to the last and final question...
W H E R E I S T H E C R A N E ?!?!!?!!?!!
😉
Отличный обзор , слон замечательный!)
i'm convinced that this is the best channel on youtube.
Wasn't expecting a MGS reference but I'm here for it
I’ve Always Been Under The Thought That THE Sam Sinister Died In The Egypt Adventure, And Then The Baron Took The Identity.
Me at 3:20 -oh we love the little babloo so much, happy babloo day!!
Me at 5:30 - oh babloo? We hate that guy, just the worst, hope we never see him again
1:54 Slugger's single shots can crack me up more than any commentary ever could xD
edit _ooof_ the only connection between the elephant and carriage is via cloth? yuccccccck, that's vicious
Yeah, haha, this is truly a “display only” model if ever I saw one. 😅
Man seeing a new orient expedition retrospective video made my day.
Oh... my... god...
Now that's a blast fron the past for me. I had this set. I still do, but i have to find it first. 😅
I had no clue some of its parts are rare 😮
This is my favorite set of the theme! You can’t beat the dark gray elephant. Tho the eyes on the newer city version are better, I prefer the poseability in this one. The cloth piece is just perfect and makes the elephant pop. 3 slugs for me!
I have this creepy head-canon for the Sam Sinister thing,
in the alt builds for the Oasis Ambush it shows a skeleton chained to a palm tree with Sam Sinister's hat on it.
I always imagined the Baron being the lackey between them and that Sam Sinister also had a way more famous reputation,
but that "Sam Sinister" never left Egypt.
Jonny tied him up figuring the location was marked on the map and The Baron would need to pass it and find him, and he did
but then Baron Von Barron just decided to leave him there. Then over time slowly went crazy over the entire thing
adopting Sam Sinister's visage and personality more and more.
I love this! Haha, creepy, but fitting. 👍
Maybe the whip is used to deal with Sam Sinister at a longer range, who knows?
I’d like to believe the whip is simply being used as a sound generator to herd the elephant, like sled dogs, Babloo could never be so cruel
This was moment Baron became Sinisterberg
Before the Dino Attack and Jurassic World molds, I used to find it hilarious that the Lego elephant was so much bigger than the dinosaurs on Dino Island (and basically the same size as the 2001 dinosaurs) 😂
Coming to this video after Ask a Mortician’s latest video - Baloo has got some explaining to do.
the last thing i was expecting from this video is a comparison between Sam Sinister and Revolver Ocelot
Slugger’s full of surprises! 😉
one arm, has a revolver, belongs in the 1920s; if the shoe fits...
Dude, You're doing amazing stuff with those themes, not to mention the montage script and of course the review itself. Great work
was not expecting the babloo animal abuse jumpscare. Great video!
Just snagged a sealed one of these sets as my first in the adventurers series for me. Absolutely hyped
That’s a great find - congrats! ❤️
Yes the clock! Strange that only the India subtheme received the clock and watch gear sets. Amazing video as always!
Yes! I also noticed how they seemed to frontload all of these extra items within the series. Mount Everest and China had far less peripherals. 👍
I love that elephant man!
This is one of my favorit adventure sets. But let's be honest, it is all about the elephant and minifigs 😅
So glad I subscribed. This channel continues to wow me!
Thank you! ❤️
Elephant go bppppppppppppppprrrrrrr 🐘
Once again, a wonderful labor of love to times gone by. Eagerly anticipating the next videos.
Loving this series R.R. 😂
There is always so much attention to detail in your videos, i truly love it!
I’m so excited to see this set in more detail - I wanted this set so badly as a kid!
All too true! 😔
What a perfect 100th video. It showcases everything that’s so great about your channel Slugger!!!
Thank you! ❤️
On the Sam Sinister problem, my personal theory is that the baron killed Sam Sinister and took his place, that's why he's wearing black clothes, a black hat and a goatee
That elephant is awesome, no wonder it's rare on the aftermarket. Congrats on 100 videos!
Your passion and dedication to share what makes these models special to you are an incredible inspiration. Keep on riding, man! I'll be glad to stick around for the rest of the ride!
"But I, I live on through this hook!"
😆❤️
I think everyone has their own take on the villain names, but mine is that the hook handed, monocle wearing baddie has always been Sam Sinister, and his cohort throughout Egypt is Slyboots
I miss this style of Lego animals, the elephant is amazing
Love the elephant
I heard somewhere that barron killed sinister and took up his identity as in the haunted house set there are multiple references to adventures which include a skeleton with a top hat
