This dropped soon after I discovered Joy Division and while you'd think no one should cover an iconic band's signature song, Swans did a great job. I love this cover and I think Ian would've too.
He also says the entire Angels of Light project was “a failure,” so you can’t really go by what he says always, haha. He is accurate, though, when he says he used a tad bit too much reverb in the early 90s!
I had the original version on red vinyl so - this was a great cover. When I already loved Joy Division. I will never forget that because I believe this was the best cover ever. And it was so brutal to this blood red thing turning and depressing me.
Yea, Goth isn't any one specific sound and The Cure do not call themselves Goth. Seen Robert Smith say he hates that label applied to The Cure. This is darker sounding than the original - fact.
its funny, i think i listened to this before a looooong time ago and just thought it was the original and without knowing it was swans. now, swans is one of my favorite bands. funny how that happens
I actually wasn’t aware of this “forever burned” compilation. Now I’ll have to! Various failures and public castration were better than some of the actual albums
When I found the music video on UA-cam, I thought it was an original song, but when I found out that it was a Joy Division cover, it blew my fucking mind! I knew about both bands before then, but love this version better!
Das ist so eine wunderbare Coverversion ! Ich kann sie aber offiziell nirgends finden. Was ist mit diesem Song passiert, dass ich es nicht offiziell beziehen kann ?
I remember hearing this once back in the day and not liking it, feeling the band had sold out somewhat by releasing this, and that it smacked of record company interference but, listening again today, I think it is far better than the original.
No no no no no, don't touch Ian Curtis version of this coz it will always be second best,ok fair enough if it's just a jam and put your own spin in it but the original will always be the best in this case.
The only acceptable cover version. Just perfect.
The cure has an awesome cover too
Disagree - do me a favour and check this one: ua-cam.com/video/GF_DtlSLI84/v-deo.html
The best version after Ian..Thanks Swans...really good...

But Paul Young did it great too 😄
this is actually really wonderful, I have no idea why M. Gira seems to loathe it so much
anyone would loathe their cover of a song that was originally penned by joy division.
I do. After this he may as well have covered Rhinestone Cowboy or the theme from Cheers.
He also says the entire Angels of Light project was “a failure,” so you can’t really go by what he says always, haha. He is accurate, though, when he says he used a tad bit too much reverb in the early 90s!
Can't FLEX MUSCLES to it I guess.
@@marktinker21 Now I'd personally love to hear Gira cover either of those...
Black version is amazing on vinyl, I bought it 30 years ago, they played it in Toronto 1988
Eu conheci essa música no Front 575 em Santo André e continuo curtindo-a em Dezembro de 2023!
I've always thought this was such an appropriate cover for them to do. Beautiful.
I had the original version on red vinyl so - this was a great cover. When I already loved Joy Division. I will never forget that because I believe this was the best cover ever. And it was so brutal to this blood red thing turning and depressing me.
ah memories! saw THE SWANS at Irving Plaza NYC in the 1980s. Her version is gorgeous too
I love this very goth version...
auradjinns Not goth at all.
+auradjinns Now when the fuck is this considered goth?...you need to listen to The Cure for that, mate.
naw its goth
Yea, Goth isn't any one specific sound and The Cure do not call themselves Goth. Seen Robert Smith say he hates that label applied to The Cure. This is darker sounding than the original - fact.
It's post-punk. Most post-punk sounds like goth, because that is the genre they adopted with their culture.
Jarboe version is the most original AND the most beautiful!
its funny, i think i listened to this before a looooong time ago and just thought it was the original and without knowing it was swans. now, swans is one of my favorite bands. funny how that happens
RIP Annik Honoré
this slaps
pure&beauty soooo sweeet
i love Joy Division but for some reason i much prefer this version of the song. really love this era of Swans
Kudos hacker 🙌
Great Covers By Swans
I remember when this song came out. It broke my heart. I can totally understand why Gira hates it.
perfect
Indeed the best cover version
I actually wasn’t aware of this “forever burned” compilation. Now I’ll have to! Various failures and public castration were better than some of the actual albums
Don't know which version I like better this version or the one with Jarboe on vocals.
This one
Almost perfect.
When I found the music video on UA-cam, I thought it was an original song, but when I found out that it was a Joy Division cover, it blew my fucking mind! I knew about both bands before then, but love this version better!
Kept going ....
Das ist so eine wunderbare Coverversion ! Ich kann sie aber offiziell nirgends finden. Was ist mit diesem Song passiert, dass ich es nicht offiziell beziehen kann ?
Only Swans could cover this song and make it sound better than the original.
Only Michael Gira can...

better than joy division
I remember hearing this once back in the day and not liking it, feeling the band had sold out somewhat by releasing this, and that it smacked of record company interference but, listening again today, I think it is far better than the original.
Like this more than Joy Division...
Love joy division but the swans cover is better
Better than joy division
lol nice one
No, but is a great fucking cover!
It's a cool and different version but let's not go overboard. Nothing will ever top the original....
Jarboes version is better
I love Swans and I love Joy Division but I'm not feeling this.
Neither does Gira, I still like it though.
No no no no no, don't touch Ian Curtis version of this coz it will always be second best,ok fair enough if it's just a jam and put your own spin in it but the original will always be the best in this case.
Nope. His (Gira ) voice does so much more to the lyrics
You mad
Nah.
