    I'm not really following the logic that people will not bother to innovate if they cannot share your personal data. Are we out of other ways to innovate?

      Thank you! That was weird indeed. I think this buys into the whole "let the corporations do as they wish or else..." blackmail rhetoric.

      Kabitu1 Hey, would you like to give me 20-50$ for a service that you don't know you need yet or that has a userbase of only a few dozen people and that you can only share with other people if they pay up ?
      Fact is, free services that live by collecting and using data can spread much faster, because they are free. You can try them out, share them with others to try out, use them if you are poor and they can have explosive growth. We are talking about that kind of growth that facebook and google have had for years. And that content creators on youtube experience.
      Sure you can do a new conventional online service, but who is going to invest in that if you could instead invest in something that has explosive growth ?
      Fact is innovation needs exploration and research. Not the kind of in a lab research, but still research and exploration that needs a lot of time and that in the long term noone is doing for free. Running ads and collecting data is an easily accessible revenue stream. Set up a website, get users, get paid. Getting users to pay needs a lot more effort and has a lot less exploration in it.
      "Hey, wanna pay me some money for my experimental service that isn't fully functional yet or might not work out at all?"
      "Hey, wanna check out my free experimental service that isn't fully functional yet or might not work out at all, but is free?"
      Which offer are you more likely to accept as a costumer ?
      And we are talking about the internet here. All you use is paid by ads and data. Unless you tell me you are willing to give every website you visit 10$ per month, don't tell the internet what it should or should not innovate with.

      +Kabitu1 people will not innovate, if innovation leads to bankruptcy, data generates insights which can be sold for money, but without data you need another source for money. if not advertisers then consumers and no one is willing to pay for websites yet.

      haven't we consumed enough? what if we don't want to share our data because we're not interested in participating in the consumerism? i would like youtube allot better if they would stop recommending videos for me based on bs i've clicked on. and youtube would still function because i know how to find what i'm looking for without what they think i want being jammed into every page.

    But then there is the privacy paradox where you knowing everybody wants your data, you try to hide it or fake it, but then it becomes suspicious that you are trying to hide it, So when you try to hide you are actually becoming more noticeable...

    I disagree that "business would fall in a death spiral without access to our data." CRAP businesses (e.g., spammers) maybe, but not legitimate ones. Are ad-based businesses (Facebook? google?) legitimate? Yes, in a way, but ONLY if they give users the CHOICE of "free (with ads)" or "paid (without)" -- both choices based on a user's ownership of data. That's not true today (and the hat idea is great), but it should be -- not perhaps to protect us from google, but all the other, dodgier companies out there.

    The problem with returning the data to its source (us), is that most of us won't make time or develop the skills to properly archive it for sharing with others, even if we're willing. That makes accessing the data more of a headache for firms, even before we start talking about what their having to seek permission for the ways they might want to use the data. Hence there's no reason to expect firms to go along with this individually owned data approach, and probably not much hope that enough individuals will get behind the issue to make a difference.

    In short, this video is saying: "In order to solve the privacy issue, share your data with us! (scientists)"
    Or in another words:
    "Be worried about sharing your data with companies like Google (e.g. privacy issues)! But wait! Don't worry that much! We know how to deal with your data! Give it to us! Give it to us!"
    Or in more academic words, if you may:
    There is a need to make "big data" more useful. Now it's time to persuade people to giveaway more of those useful data, by promising them more control over their own data. These useful data will become a service which they will pay for it soon.
    Am I wrong?

      Adrian Moment I'm trying it at the Moment, Adrian. The search results, at least for the topics I'm interested in, are often quite underwhelming to be honest. In light of that, it's very tempting to return to Google. If one is just worried about private entities, but not the government, then simply using only one provider for each service (Mail, WebSearch, Videos) might be an alternative.

    So besides some ethics concerns, who benefits in allocating big data back to the consumer?
    It's work for the companies who do so, it's work for me to redistribute it back out in exchange for services, and I'm not entirely convinced it benefits all that much during this round trip.

    I guess the only people that have something against this HUGE data sharing, are those who have something to hide. But then again ... everybody has something to hide... hmmm, I always had this thought process that I am still anonymous behind all this data, that all this data is just for statistics and no human being can search for my information, but I just realised how wrong I am. The data is there and it's saved under my name(s), and the only thing that determines, if this data collection is good or bad, is who is using it.

  • @DariodeJudicibus

    This is not entirely true, at least in Europe. In the European Union there is a law, called GDPR, that allows us to request AT ANY TIME to delete and stop using the data they collected, EVEN IF we initially gave consent. The only disadvantage is that, of course, if that data is used for the operation of a product or service, with deletion we will lose the ability to use that product or service, but if it is used for marketing activities, for example, we can continue to use it. There is a greater respect for privacy in Europe than in the US.

  • @Bfritz0815

    niec idea. i just have three question here: (in the follwing posts)

    • @Bfritz0815
      @Bfritz0815 9 років тому

      Bfritz0815 1. Where exaclty will that data reside? (i.e. who controls the marketplace and what's in it for them)

    • @Bfritz0815
      @Bfritz0815 9 років тому

      Bfritz0815 2.So the same kind of users (those who don't bother taking even simple and quick measures to control, protect and regulate their own data in situations where its obvious to do so) will suddenly develop a consciousness for the issues here and take charge of their Data? (Because apparently that is what the approach suggests)

    • @Bfritz0815
      @Bfritz0815 9 років тому

      Bfritz0815 3. So right now i am concerned with the mere possibility that a number of such service providers MIGHT possibly come together to fully integrate data abut me from all their different user profiles of mine. The solution to that is to create one single profile (aka. single point of failure) and store it with someone else.
      This may seem similar to question1 but the point here is:
      Regardless of my issues in trusting/distrusting an individual provider, there i can at least choose not to use their services.
      (e.g.
      If i don't trust google specifically, i could get all kinds of services elsewhere: storage and online document editing from Microsoft, web-search from Microsoft and DuckDuckGo etc
      )
      If people need one monolithic data-profile-service to do things online that counteracts the entire point in a distributed kind of web.
      So in effect in a centralized platform, people would either:
      a) ... give away all their data to anyone who asks fiercely enough (i imagine a dialog like "No data, no shoes, no
      service")
      I think most people would cave in to that for the same reasons they don't care about privacy today.
      Even worse: As a reaction to such a request the esaiest reaction would be to give permission for the entire user-
      profile because limiting access would require making an effort.
      Consequentially the great majority of users would be even more transparent in such a model.
      b) ... stop using that service. As a resutl the negative consequences presented in this video would happen anyway.
      Also:
      If someone (successfully) attacks my google profile, they onla have my google data and not ALL of my data as they would if they attacked my "central"-profile.

    • @Bfritz0815
      @Bfritz0815 9 років тому

      Bfritz0815
      Conclusion:
      I rather prefer having my profile data stored specific to requirements than in a centralized "big brother".
      I prefer
      a) "Google has my Google search history"
      to
      b) "Anyone who asks nicely or breaks into my one central account by force has ALL of my data"
      AKA "Anyone has my Google search history"
